Monopoly

  • I was playing Monopoly with my mom, sister, and grandma. As we were setting up, I noticed my Grandma and I sort our cash the same way--largest bills on the left, smallest bills on the right. This was opposite how my mom and sister sorted their cash, they went small-to-large instead. "Looks like Grandma and I are big-endian, and you two are little-endian." I got three blank stares in response and had to explain the joke. Once I explained it my grandma was the only one who found it funny. And she was the only non-programmer in the group.

Hey that's great shut up for a minute.

Just last week I played a newer edition of Monopoly, and they've come up with an interesting mid-to-end game accelerator, the "Speed Die". After your first pass around the board, you get to roll a third die.  1, 2 or 3 means "add this number to the other 2 dice".  The Mr. Monopoly symbol (effectively a 4 or 5) means make your move, resolve that, then move your piece to the next unowned property OR to the next property owned by another player.  The Bus symbol (effectively a 6) means you can move either one of the rolled dice, or both (if you roll 1 + 5, you can move 1 or 5 or 6).  Or if you roll any triple, you can warp to any space on the board.

It really speeds up the mid game, where all what everyone's trying to do is land on unowned spaces. I mean who really gives a fuck if you land on a property with no houses on it? Oh no I owe you $6 for Baltic Ave.

The end game does get weird.  One game was me with every property in the game and tons of hotels. My opponent had one monopoly, with one hotel on St. James. That's $750.  I rolled Mr. Monopoly after Mr. Monopoly. Remember that the dude makes you go to the next space owned by another player. And St. James is the first property on the only monopoly not owned by me.  It pretty much came down to "There is now a 1/3 chance I will give you $750".  I think I forked over close to $10k, and ended up going completely bankrupt.

And yes I know TRWTF is playing Monopoly with only two players, but when the only other player is my wife's friend's 10 year old and this keeps him busy for a few hours so my wife and her friend can have a little quiet time to catch up, then NOW who's TWTF, you peanutbutter face?!?!??!

He's just being honest.  I mean there are so many better games, granted at 10 you should probably go with something lighter on strategy then Go or Chess but I bet something like Kill Doctor Lucky whould hold the attention of any 10 year old.
