I decided to install Ubuntu instead of Fedora.

  • Here's what I did:

    1. Start downloading Ubuntu LiveCD
    2. Get bored and cancel the download
    3. Download 35MB "mini" ISO for network installation
    4. Find out I have no blank CDs and no CD writing software
    5. sudo mv /home/ben/Downloads/mini.iso /boot
    6. Reboot and mount the ISO file as a drive from the bootloader (GRUB2)
    7. Write this post on my Chromebook while Ubuntu downloads and installs only what is needed
    8. Go eat ravioli.

  • Enjoy the advertising! (assuming you install Gnome or whatever the other GUI is called)

It is a little irritating that a so-called "free" OS is not actually free.

You can turn them off, though.

I installed Ubuntu to run XMBC at home, Ubuntu because I (as a former C# dev) am familiar only with this flavour which I use at my current employer. I signed up an account at TDWTF to bitch about the ads.. then I realised that they had been in Ubuntu since September last year, so probably one of you regulars has already bitched about it.

  • I'm mainly switching to Ubuntu because Steam supports it explicitly, so I assume they have working graphics drivers. How do I know my drivers on Fedora weren't working?

    1. Go to chrome://gpu in Google Chrome
    2. Notice that none of the colored text is green (mostly red, some yellow)
    3. Go to the same page on my Chromebook
    4. Notice that all but one of the lines are green, and the remaining one is yellow

Oh my god, they expect to somehow make money in exchange for their work! The horror! The horror!

Seriously, though, fuck Canonical. Linux is a shitty OS and most of the users are idiots, so what did they expect? The Linux user base is basically people too cheap / crazy to shell out $50 for a decent OS: of course this was going to backfire.

  • Ben, are you just trying to win "Most Pointless Thread Ever"?

  • Nah - he just wants us to know that he has a Chromebook

Depends on who the $50 is going to.

According to This Guy you can get Windows 98 from someone in Uganda for $30.

Microsoft? $50 is probably a bit high for the price you pay for a bundled OEM install.

So not only do I have to buy a new operating system, but I also have to buy a new computer?

Is my Pentium 4 not good enough for you?

Did your computer not come with an OS in the first place? Even if it didn't, at some point you should have had the option to buy a sub-$100 copy of Windows. Hell, for $130 you can buy a full copy of Win8 Professional. That's chump change, especially considering that your "free" OS is going to do far less and take up a lot more of your time.

That's why I installed Ubuntu. The box was company surplus, which I purchased for +/- US$40. Cheaper than buying a Raspberry Pi in this country, and I was not going to suffer through getting a bootleg XP running on a sub-par machine.

The one redeeming factor in Linux is that it can run on crappy hardware. (Assuming you can find the drivers, and you turn off automatic updates so they don't bork your drivers)

True. But only for some approximate values of "$50", "decent", and "I can buy".

Approximate, and, yes, close enough for me.

  • Okay so I realized that not only did I have a shit OS but also my Pentium 4 machine was a piece of shit.

Tonight I hooked up a machine very much like australium but with more shit on it. How much more shit? It took fifteen minutes to get icons showing on the desktop (it was Windows XP with every piece of software known to man installed). After I copied a bunch of family pictures onto a thumb drive, I rebooted with my Ubuntu LiveDVD in the drive.

I got about fifteen seconds into the installation when the installer crashed with the message "IO ERROR: IS THE MEDIA DAMAGED?" I took the disk out and GUESS WHAT SOMEONE FUCKING SCRATCHED MY DVD

So now I've burned a new LiveDVD and my upgrade from Pentium 4 to Core 2 Quad is underway.

  • Wheeeee filesystem creation failed

"But it has RAID1!!!!! There's no way the drives could fail!" --my dad

Well, that explains the scratching sound that comes from it whenever I try to boot it.

You guys deal with it. I'm tired.

Yeeeowch! I can get Win7 Professional for that money. (And yes, you can still buy Win7 by jumping quite some hoops.) I wouldn't inflict Win8 on anybody, that's the one thing that pushed me over the edge making me jump to OSX. (I could've just bought a laptop, wipe it and put in Win7 and/or Linux ... but that would mean paying the Win8 MS tax, something I won't do.
BTW, Linux is good on the server side. Mostly what we've been doing at work, and I've managed to get projects that don't involve the MS OSen for quite some time. :)

    Here's what I did (yesterday):

    1. Download latest Ubuntu ISO, which takes forever because I have a really shitty Internet connection
    2. Install in VM
    3. Find that it's just as retarded and useless as the last time I tried 3 or 4 years ago
    4. Delete
    5. No Chromebook or Ravioli was involved

I stopped reading that fantasy comic she drew because she quit and her succesor was not nearly as good at the artin'.  :(

It's a fun, taste class of pasta, but very tiresome to make yourself (you generally don't want to make paste yourself, unless you're a pasta hobbyist). You should buy a package.

I never read the fantasy comic, but I stopped reading Awkward Zombie because it's always shitty Nintendo games now. She used to do comics on Mass Effect, Elder Scrolls, etc. Now it's either shitty Gameboy JRPGs or Animal Crossing.

I'm sure she just draws what she actually plays, but the problem is if you write a joke about Elder Scrolls I get it, but if you write a joke about Fire Emblem I have no fucking clue what the joke is about and I'm just confused and I'm sure as shit not going to buy a Nintendo to figure it out.

I just extract the gist of the joke, even if it's less than when I'd get if I knew the game.

Games are all the same anyway. You don't need intimate knowledge of that farming game or whatever to understand that Games Have Weird Mechanics That You Can Exploit For Comedy, you know?

A lot of those jokes are specific to the game though. Although I'm reading some of the ones I skipped, there's some Age of Empires ones that are pretty funny I guess. And it's more obsession with Zelda now. Ugh.

Hey look, here's a comic of WHY I don't play JRPGs. WTF Japan.
