Hooray data loss

    Today's lesson:

Before you run del /S /Q C:\cygwin (since it conveniently has no uninstaller), remember if you have a junction point in C:\cygwin\home\username to C:\Users\username\Documents.

If you don't, you're gonna have a bad time.

Luckily this happened on the laptop I am currently moving out of, and I have ninja-like ctrl+C skills.

Per this article:   A Junction Point should never be removed in Win2k, Win2003 and WinXP with Explorer or del /s commands, or with any utility that recursively walks directories since these will delete the target directory and all its subdirectories. Instead, use the rmdir command, the linkd utility, or a third party tool to remove the junction point without affecting the target. In Vista/Win7, it’s safe to delete Junction Points with Explorer or with the rdir and del commands.

Run setup.exe, go to the package chooser screen (in category view mode), click on the word "Default" next to the "All" category until it cycles to "Uninstall".

Deletes all installed files while leaving your home dir, any user-created files etc. safely behind.

Just like every other Windows program! I'd like to hear a blakeyrant about that one.

    Actually I was following this:
    [quote user="Cygwin FAQ"]

2.19. How do I uninstall all of Cygwin?

Setup has no automatic uninstall facility. The recommended method to remove all of Cygwin is as follows:

    1. If you have any Cygwin services running, remove by repeating the instructions in http://cygwin.com/faq/faq.html#faq.setup.uninstall-service for all services that you installed. Common services that might have been installed are sshd, cron, cygserver, inetd, apache, postgresql, and so on.

    2. Stop the X11 server if it is running, and terminate any Cygwin programs that might be running in the background. Exit the command prompt and ensure that no Cygwin processes remain. Note: If you want to save your mount points for a later reinstall, first save the output of mount -m as described at

      .

    3. Delete the Cygwin root folder and all subfolders. If you get an error that an object is in use, then ensure that you've stopped all services and closed all Cygwin programs. If you get a 'Permission Denied' error then you will need to modify the permissions and/or ownership of the files or folders that are causing the error. For example, sometimes files used by system services end up owned by the SYSTEM account and not writable by regular users.

The quickest way to delete the entire tree if you run into this problem is to change the ownership of all files and folders to your account. To do this in Windows Explorer, right click on the root Cygwin folder, choose Properties, then the Security tab. If you are using Windows XP Home or Simple File Sharing, you will need to boot into Safe Mode to access the Security tab. Select Advanced, then go to the Owner tab and make sure your account is listed as the owner. Select the 'Replace owner on subcontainers and objects' checkbox and press Ok. After Explorer applies the changes you should be able to delete the entire tree in one operation. Note that you can also achieve this in Cygwin by typing chown -R user / or by using other tools such as CACLS.EXE.

    4. Delete the Cygwin shortcuts on the Desktop and Start Menu, and anything left by setup.exe in the download directory. However, if you plan to reinstall Cygwin it's a good idea to keep your setup.exe download directory since you can reinstall the packages left in its cache without redownloading them.

    5. If you added Cygwin to your system path, you should remove it unless you plan to reinstall Cygwin to the same location. Similarly, if you set your CYGWIN environment variable system-wide and don't plan to reinstall, you should remove it.

    6. Finally, if you want to be thorough you can delete the registry tree Software\Cygwin under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE and/or HKEY_CURRENT_USER. However, if you followed the directions above you will have already removed everything important. Typically only the installation directory has been stored in the registry at all.

No, TRWTF is that turning 18 doesn't allow you to do anything exciting in the US. Go buy a pack of smokes and a Playboy. Then throw that shit in the garbage because if you don't smoke already you really shouldn't start, and Playboy? The internet is full of porn already. I suppose you could read the articles.

Luckily where I grew up the drinking age was 18. OTOH, I had been drinking in the same bar since I was 15, so turning 18 didn't allow me to do anything exciting. Make of this tale what you will.

I've opened my first bank account at age 16, have been renting my own apartment since I was 17 (though it might or might not have been legal, but nobody gave a fuck), and haven't been asked for an ID when buying a beer since about the age of 15. The only thing that turning 18 got me was an awesome party.

So yeah, the closer you get to the legal age, the less of a big deal it becomes.

Its not just junction points (whatever they are???). I set up dropbox on my computer at home; pointed it to a folder that had a bunch of videos of my golden puppies (we show goldens, and had a litter 3 years ago). Later I needed some room on my HD, found I had two folders with the same videos in them, and deleted the contents of one of the folders. Whoops -- not really duplicates; 2 folders pointing to the same files. Good thing they were on dropbox.

It bothers me a lot when someone who is 18 is in the news for committing a violent crime; and they call him a "teen". Technically yes, he's under 20; but in reality he is an adult just like everyone else. It also bothers me that the news people seem to choose what to call them -- "A teen was caught" or "a 18 year old man was caught" - makes one seem less serious than the other.

True, but the life expectancy of a male in Poland is, what, 28? 29? So you guys have to get a jump on that stuff.

Cygwin will understand it and windows programs need the path converted by cygpath anyway.

Reminds me of a joke I heard a long time ago:

A cop sees a car parked by the side of the road late at night with two kids in it. Suspecting funny-business, he pulls over and walks up, and finds a young man reading a book and a young woman knitting. He says, "How old are you two?" Young man replies "I'm nineteen, and shes 18 in..." [checks watch] "twelve minutes."

I didn't say it was a good joke.
