Did you try spitting on your fingers?

I have a Dell U2711 monitor, and on the first day of configuring it I somehow managed to lock the on-screen display (OSD). I struggled to get it unlocked for a while, using the official instructions, but to no avail. Specifically, they said to hold the 4th and 5th capacitive buttons on the monitor for fifteen seconds to unlock the display. I tried this a gazillion times, and nothing. Oh well, the settings were already just about perfect anyway, so I leave it alone and mostly forget about the problem.

Today at work I am setting up my new upgraded workstation. It has a DisplayPort port, I figure I can finally eliminate that analog flicker. Except my OSD is still locked. I repeat the process I tried a year ago, with Googling leading me to the same thread of people with the same problem. I try the two-button trick a few more times, nothing.

I scroll way down in the thread, and someone mentions that their fingers would dry out in the 15 second interval holding the buttons down, and that by applying a bit of spittle to his fingertips first he managed to get the buttons to register for the full fifteen seconds.

So I try it, after 20 or so unsuccessful attempts with dry fingers... ...and it fucking worked.

(Edit: the fun thing is a few other dry-fingers in the thread ended up getting warranty replacements from Dell)

  • The Dell U-series ("Ultra-Sharp") are about the best monitors you can buy at the moment. The U2711 is about the best in the U-series.

I am being sincere. Had one for a few years now. 27-inch, 2560x1440. I went with it because it had high pixel density (relative to other large monitors.. who wants 1080p on a 30" screen?? everything would be huuuge)..

Also, the colors will blow your fucking mind. It's probably the most gorgeous screen I've ever looked at. Maybe not as sharp as a Retina display, but with a much better profile. In fact, after using it for awhile, I was surprised to find out how much worse colors looked on other monitors. I'd design some UI and it would glisten on my monitor, then I'd look at somebody else's and it would be like "Oh, it's just green and gray. Huh. Looks pretty boring here."

For $1000, I consider it a steal. I mean, what do we use more than our computers?

  •  I have "cheap" monitors and while they aren't the best evar! They have a decent colour, constrast that is much better than the monitors at work.

The monitors I use at work are so bad (HP models) that I can't match the color by eye using the Windows tools.

I dunno whether it is the colour gamut or not but it just sucks big time.

What sucks is your spelling of colors, but only 66% of the time. Also it's probably a Spanish thing but in the civilized world the exclamation mark is a full stop not just something you throw in there to make it pretty.

Knowing that you carelessly picked a username by punching a keyboard at random instead of thinking for 2 seconds to make one up, I wonder what magic and wonders you must be doing with your time to make it so valuable.

At the age of 16, when I finally got my Internet connection and (I believe) started using that nickname? Dunno, probably getting drunk with a single beer and desperatedly trying to get laid. Or playing Tibia.

I'm still using the Dell Inspiron 8002 laptop I bought in 2001, solely because it's taken until about now for modern laptops to come with panels that look as nice as its 1600x1200 Ultrasharp 15.4" display. So Dell has had a source of decent IPS LCD panels for at least 12 years.

Tell that to the Precision M6300, a "mobile workstation" with a TN panel.  An 8-bit TN panel.  Personally I'd have rather had a 6-bit VA or IPS panel rather than an 8-bit TN. :(

Dell offered an Ultrasharp display as a configuration option for the Inspiron 8200. They don't do that for all models. My point is that they have at least been able to supply high quality panels, to my knowledge, since at least 2001.

I don't think so. For example, digital photos looked much, much more realistic. At the same time, graphics and color palettes for the web often looked good on the Super Monitor but a lot less dazzling on puny, mortal monitors.
