€222,222,222.22

    Via ZeroHedge:

A "German bank employee fell asleep on his keyboard and accidentally transformed a minor transfer into a 222 million euro ($293 million) order, a court heard Monday. The Hessen labour court heard that the man was supposed to transfer just 62.40 euros from a bank account belonging to a retiree, but instead "fell asleep for an instant, while pushing onto the number 2 key on the keyboard" -- making it a huge 222,222,222.22 euro order." Nearly a third of a billion mistake blamed on a "sleepy finger?" That's a new one...

    ...

Luckily, not one Russian oligrach depositor was impaired as a result of this epic mistake, since the transaction was promptly unwound and the bank corrected the error. Where things get even funnier, and why this was ultimately taken to court, is because the sleepy man's 48-year old colleague let the mistake slip through when verifying the order. This promptly resulted in his termination.

Just the other day I accidentally transferred $L:a;lkdsjaflkdjf to my dog's savings account.

  • How the fuck do you type eleven twos instead of sixty two? Does the software eat anything above the hundred millions for "safety"?

I'm still trying to work out what happened to the 6. If he drifted off while pressing the 2, shouldn't the amount ended up as 622,222,222.22 ?

And surely the system would have disallowed an obvious overdraft like that automatically? Unless somehow said pensioner was Rupert Murdoch.

  • @Ben L. said:

The softwre probably truncates the number, because the underlying data storage is a numeric(9,2) field, and when you get data that is obviously wrong the right thing to do - as EVERYBODY knows  - is to torture it untill it conforms. Transmitting errors from other layers is a simptom of careless coding.

Who said he was typing the number? Maybe he drifted off before starting and his finger happened to be close to the 2 (probably on the numpad, right?) and it held the key down for a second until it slipped off. Seems possible to me.

mmmm true I guess. I can't get used to using the keypad for numbers so it sits on the side of my keyboard like an unloved child.

Although my second point is still valid. It must be a shitty system that allows a transfer from an account with obviously not enough balance without triggering validation alerts or having to enter some sort of override code.

Although this is bank software we are talking about I suppose...

[cut to Joe, pacing around the living room while he explains his plan to his two seated friends]

Joe: So I figure I just gotta trick the bank into wiring $222,222,222.22 to an offshore account. My plan is to find a teller who's narcoleptic, seduce her, then find a way to get her to fall asleep while doing a transfer so her finger sorta hits the 2 key for a few seconds..

Narrator: But that's when the unexpected happened.. ["hilarious" record needle scratch sound]

[cut to Joe and pretty girl on date at fancy restaurant]

Joe: [to girl] You look so beautiful tonight... [looks into her eyes, she stares back into his] ..I think I'm falling for you. [she falls face-first into her soup, loud ZZZZZZ sound effect, Joe waits a beat] Uh, waiter, I think there's a girl in my soup! [upbeat music starts playing]

Narrator: [while montage of Joe and girl doing stuff together plays onscreen] From Paramount Pictures... a movie about finding out what's really valuable in life......

Joe: [cut to scene of Joe, drenched, in pouring rain, yelling after girl who is angrily stomping away] I know what's really valuable in life, now! And it's not $222,222,222.22! It's love!

As dhromey pointed out, the initial transaction was clearly an accident. The person fell asleep. Maybe they had some medical condition or something.

  • @dhromed said:

It's negligee, drop an "e" and add "nce".

Also, if the falling asleep was caused by the person not getting enough rest the night before, it could be negligence. If a bus driver crashes falls asleep behind the wheel or a surgeon falls asleep during a sex change operation and both decided to go to work despite not sleeping adequately the night before, that would be negligent.

For a bank teller, the threshold for negligence is probably a lot higher, though.

Nah, I think gold is probably a fine value store. But "gefilte mines"? C'mon, the Jews are clearly going to put us to work in the matzah quarries instead.
