Quick Safari bug

  • haha you have an iPad!

  • What qualifies this as a Safari bug rather than a CS bug?

  •  Works for me on iOS 6.1.3.

  • I like how it has “iPad” written on-screen in the top left corner (as well as on the back). Not like some of those other devices where you could easily forget what device you're using.

In all fairness, that's where iOS typically writes the carrier name.  It's like a friend's car that says "MALIBU" on the dashboard, just in case you forget what you should be drinking as you get in.  I mean, what you're driving.

  • Discourse touched me in a no-no place

Is it the carrier name or the network name? The latter makes a load of sense when you're traveling or near a border.

  • Mobile Safari is TRWTF. Conspiracy theory says Apple's deliberately crippling it so as to drive development to native apps (where they can gouge the fuck out of your customers).</>

Network afaik. On iPhone I got "Optus" but same sim with android I get "TPG" on the lock screen. TPG is an MVNO of Optus.

  • When you shut off Cellular (or have a WiFi only iPad), it shows iPad in the menubar.

Mine says "Bell" when I decide that 3G is a good idea.

What's an iPad, anyways? I keep hearing people talking about them, but I never really see anything about them in the news. The only thing I heard was that it's like a Palm Pilot but without a stylus. I guess it's voice input only, then-- or do you have to wear a fingerpad to simulate a stylus?

I should've clarified that better.  It displays the PLMN tag of the GSM network you're currently camped on.  If you're on Verizon like I am, it always says "Verizon".  Unsure what Sprint does, so I can't say if it specifically says the carrier or camped network on CDMA.

Fun fact: The carrier/network name area can sometimes be a bitmap!  Some carriers include a tiny .png in their "Carrier Settings" package that gets pushed over the air.  Verizon's carrier package contains a bitmap that just says "Verizon" in the default UI font.

I'm wondering why yours doesn't say "iPawed" or some other furry shit.

Why is the guy with the furry avatar suddenly accusing everyone else of being a furry?

Because I'm not a furry.  I just like to draw cats.  I can't do it well, but I'm a programmer, not a cartoonist.

That's supposed to be a cat?? I thought it was.. like.. a man-dog or something.

The ears are all wrong for man-dog.

It's obviously supposed to be "Bread Loaf Snout", from that popular children's cartoon. You know, Bread Loaf Snout and Friends. The one I just made up.

I am, (kinda) (see icon) and I know that if you stick with it and pay attention, you'll get better. Just like any skill.

    FYI: cat ears are pointy.

If that thing is supposed to be a lion, the ears ain't too bad. It's the bread loaf I have issues with. And that noodle-y right arm.

    Lions are frowny motherfuckers.

Over here, the Orange/T-Mobile merger finally became public at the end of last year; they became EE (Everything Everywhere - or as their idiotic logo makes it appear: 8EE). My iPhone went from saying Orange next to the reception bar, to "Oran/T-Mob" - which scrolled backwards and forwards infuriatingly for no reason because if they stopped fading the letters and scrolling it there was enough room for the text word to fit at once - and now it says "EE" ... except for when it doesn't.

It would appear that, AFAIK, the name is based on the carrier name as broadcast by the local tower. At home, our tower was recently refurbished (with 3G, snazzy stuff!) and says "EE" - but if I go to my parents house, the closest tower there still broadcasts "Orange" even though Orange technically no longer exists.

    WTF?

In here, one of the competitors to Orange just have been rebranded to T-Mobile (they were owned by the corp since a while), but... merger?

    Bizarre.

You for sure had a [local operator company X, owned by Orange] and [local operator company Y, owned by T-Mobile], but if one of the big corps would buy out the other local telco, they'd consolidate under their brand.

So sounds like a 3rd corp, using the EE brand, came and bought both telco X and telco Y from their former owners.

That is indeed possible, but not something that the media (in-house and beyond) has related to the public. Adding to that, T-Mobile in the UK *was* the actual UK branch of Deutsch Telecom, though I'm not entirely sure about Orange (who are also in part Wanadoo, Tiscali and FreeServe).
