Arrested Development

  • Is anybody else watching this? Boy, they really didn't understand what made the original series funny, did they?

  • So there are two series with the same name now? And both comedies? And running at the same time?

    What the fuck?

The original series wasn't funny. Haven't seen the new series because I didn't care for the old one.

I still prefer the original Brittish version, Poirot. That was before they changed the family name and replaced David Suchet with David Cross. Fucking Americans.

No. AD ran for 3 seasons from 2003-2006. It became a cult classic and for years people were trying to get it brought back. Finally, in 2011, Netflix announced they were going to make 16 new episodes. They just released them all yesterday, and they're bad. It's the same characters (albeit quite aged and acting somewhat differently), same back story, but with a total different style of humor. Basically, the things that people loved about the original series are not there.

I don't do Netflix, but I'm not surprised that it's not very good. It was going down hill towards the end of the original, as many things do. If it had continued broadcasting, I'd still have watched it, as I do many over the hill shows. You get invested in the characters and it's hard to quit. I'm actually kind of glad that the networks kill some shows I really like before they start to really suck.

A clever gag or a clearly limited story arc over their natural lives are better art than keeping something alive because we're conditioned to watch it. Compare Last Resort to Prison Break. When I heard that Last Resort was cancelled, I remember thinking, "Good, now hopefully they had enough notice and can wrap everything up correctly." I thought the ending was a bit rushed, but much better than the desperate conspiracies of later Prison Break seasons.
