2mbit broadband, Steam flies at 1.25mbit

12mbit broadband, Steam saunters at 3mbit

Now we have fibre; 75mbit. Steam crawls at 7mbit.

Relative to total speed. Thus: 1.25 = just over half the total speed of 2; 3 = one quarter of 12; and 7 is less than a tenth of 75. Slower relatively.

And you obviously haven't gotten the point, yes the speed is faster, but not as a percentage of total speed. Hence the word relative instead of the word absolute.

A very simple example, with pizza:

I have one pizza. I eat half of it. I have eaten 1/2 (8/16ths) the total amount of pizza available.

I have two pizzas. I eat three quarters of one pizza. I have eaten 3/8ths (6/16ths) of the total amount of pizza.

I have four pizzas. I eat one and a quarter pizzas. I have eaten 5/16ths of the total amount of pizza.

I eat relatively less pizza every time.

I get it but your frame of reference doesn't make any fucking sense.

But don't worry, I'm sure the guys at Valve right now are running around in a panic: "some douchebag with a fiber connection is bitching that our downloads aren't fast enough to keep up with the year-over-year percentage improvement in his Internet connection speed! WE NEED MORE SERVERS!!!"

You know I get accused of making some petty complaints around here, like that recent Chrome titlebar dragging thread, but yours takes the cake here. Because not only did you make the petty-ass complaint ("I can't download games as fast as I want"), but you then twisted and turned language around to make it sound as if you were getting *slower* downloads each time you upgraded your Internet connection, when that's the opposite of the truth. Which is a shame, because that would have been a pretty damned good WTF.

So you're not just petty, but you're a liar. But you're a bad liar because you exposed your lie in the same post you made it in. So... I guess let's default to you're an idiot.

I refute your conclusion, since at no have I lied nor proven idiotic. At no point did I claim it was slower bps, I claimed it was slower relatively. That is pretty simple, and not a lie.

There was a miscomprehension, and it went too far. Let's leave it be.

(Also, RE: fibre - I'm in the UK. We have less ground to cover when it comes to rolling out new networks. Be patient, you'll get it soon.)

The SI unit of slowness is the second.
Q.E.D. 1.5 megabits per second takes more seconds than 3 megabits per second with a faster internet connection.

Maybe your connection sucks? Do you get fast speeds with everything else? Or maybe you have the wrong "download region" selected? My Steam downloads are always as fast as the line.

I'm assuming you're not confusing Mbit/s and MB/s.

The first 2.6 gigabytes were obviously downloaded at a semi-reasonable speed, or this game wouldn't have existed when I started downloading it.

What is a bottleneck and why might you be experiencing one located somewhere other than your local network uplink?

The bottleneck is that they have to contract to a company in China to manually copy the ones and zeros because it's too expensive to do it by machine.
