The Wine file browser

  • Right, so I'm going to open this map I was working on a while ago and start working on it again. I open Hammer, Valve's map editor. I click File. I click Open....

That's not where I wanted it to open the file browser, and the file browser is terrible, but okay. I'll click my way to where I want to be (typing the name of a folder doesn't work).

What? The folder's empty? I could have sworn... Wait.

    Ah, there it is.

    Fuck you too, Wine.

  • Why are you always giving Wine such a hard time? The devs made the file browser work for them, not for mainstream users. If you don't like it, you can always fork it.

  •  Stop trying to run Windows software on Linux. That's your problem right there.

Really? You've never encountered the concept of "self-hating black man" or whatever? Basically, anyone who is discriminating against individuals based on their race (even if the discrimination is against their own race, or is positive in nature) is engaging in racism.

That's normal. It's a feature in Windows open/save dialogs that hides all the files so that you can't see where you are. Apple figured that it made more sense to simply disable the files that didn't match the file type filter, so that you do at least have context. It's really confusing in Office 2007+ because all your pre-2007 documents never show up in the Save dialog and it looks like you're in the wrong folder. Windows Open/Save dialogs are a clusterwtf.

That said, that really is a dreadful dialog implementation.

I went looking for a joke and instead got a picture of a guy in a wifebeater and cowboy hat. Finally, I can stop jerking off to Morb's avatar pasted onto Dick Cheney's body.

Only utterly useless human being thing PHP is anything other than donkey shit. (Hint: that's you!)

    • Anyone who chooses to live in Ohio

I thought Ohio was one of those imaginary anti-states that politicians use to balance out certain socio-economic equations. It isn't actually a real place, it's a mathmatical construct.

    • People who abuse Hungarian notation

That variable was asking for it-- flaunting it's type right out front for everyone to see.

(It's funny because it's a satire of a horrible excuse for rape!)

    • Teenagers

That teen was asking for it-- flaunting her nubile body right out front for everyone to see.

.... wait, that's the excuse itself. Oh. =(

    • Hipsters

And don't get me started on the legsters (or how they connect to the hipsters, or how the hipsters connect to the backbonesters!)

    • People who drink diet soda or use Splenda/Equal/other fake sugars (exclusions allowed for diabetics/hypoglycemics)

So in your little world, soda of any kind is okay? Why do you hate children?

  • I went looking for a joke and instead got a picture of a guy in a wifebeater and cowboy hat.
No, there's no joke there. He is a despicable excuse for a human being.

Not sure I follow. Clarification: I think the taste of artificial sugar is disgusting, and by association, anyone who chooses to consume it without a valid medical condition necessitating said consumption, is an awful person worthy of scorn. The same applies for people who cook steak anything over mid-rare, people who like ketchup, people who don't like pickles, and people who choose Miracle Whip instead of mayo. Just who do they think they are, having preferences that don't conform to mine?!? Unacceptable!

  • @mikeTheLiar said:

I take back the pickle thing. People who don't like pickles generally let me eat them instead. They're okay folks.

  • Valve's tools barely work properly even on windows, so I really wouldn't recommend using them with something inherently less stable.

Hammer is basically awful. They seem to break it even more every couple of months. It also, apparently at random, gets weird floating-point

errors in its vertices (especially problematic if you copy/paste stuff a lot), which will only be a problem when you try and reload a map saved

with such errors (either it won't load at all, or the brush with the errors will not exist AND all your groups and visgroups will be lost).

Hammer is a bad bad thing, and it really ought to fuck off.

Does that include high glucose corn syrup? Very little industrial prepared food is made using sugar as a sweetener. In a lot of places, you have to go out of your way to buy products that contain real sugar.

Perhaps I should have said 'synthetic' sugar. HFCS isn't great, but at least it's not a wretch inducing as the 'diet' alternative. It's really a non-issue for me, because I'm don't really care for sweet stuff anyway, so it's not part of my diet.

  • @mikeTheLiar said:

I prefer my Pepsi without real sugar. The real stuff gives me a headache.

Also, there are several groups of people that hate some aspects of their national character if not themselves. Examples include the Chinese, in China no less, who prefer Japanese products because they consider those superior. To be fair, they really are in most cases. Because the western cor****ion has taken deep roots in Chinese pol**ics, ensuring zero worker or consumer rights. (Bleeps added to keep this page viewable from China.)

Similarly but completely unrelatedly, the Palestinians prefer Israeli products. It has to do with both the quality of said products and the fact that Israel is still the only country to give it's Palestinian residents citizenship. And there are sizable populations of Palestinians in e.g. Syria.

Also, the Swedish and Finnish governments hate their own citizens and prefer muslims. Sources: http://theatheistconservative.com/2013/03/28/europe-prefers-muslims/ http://www.libertiesalliance.org/2013/04/09/swedens-shame-anti-christian-immigration-policy-that-may-send-christians-to-their-deaths-3/

So there! What do you think of it?

  •  Also, Wine has been less stable than the environment it emulates only since version 6.0 of said environment.

This is purely an opinion and may or may not represent reality, but I think it has to do with the swings in blood-sugar levels that follow after consumption of high-sugar products. Or with the effects to insulin production. Feel free to pick.

I believe they also have a risk to have a huge crash (i.e., possibility of coma) if they have too much sugar in a short period of time. TBH, I'm basing that exception off of a woman I used to work with, who was hypoglycemic and said she couldn't drink regular soda. I also seem to remember reading an essay by someone who was newly hypoglycemic, decided to treat her low blood sugar with a massive bowl of ice cream and chocolate, and woke up on the floor of her apartment some 15 hours later. It's entirely possible that you're right, in which case, fuck them too.

I suppose the production/release of insulin could cause blood sugar to drop low again in those that over produce insulin, but I don't have direct experience with it.

  • @mikeTheLiar said:

Bingo. I'm very mildly hypoglycemic. I can usually eat or drink whatever I want, but sometimes a bit of sugar will cause a bad crash, especially if I don't eat for a long time after.

  • @mikeTheLiar said:

I believe they also have a risk to have a huge crash (i.e., possibility of coma) if they have too much sugar in a short period of time.

That's correct. In some people a big enough spike in glucose intake may trigger an overproduction in insulin. This type of hyperinsulinism is followed by a temporary but fairly acute state of hypoglycemia, which may manifest as a seizure. In severe cases it may induce a coma. Think of it as a form of allergic reaction to sugar and you wouldn't be too far from the truth. Infact; in some cases that's exactly what it is an allergic reaction to a particular glucose compound. Often it will be a synthethic sweetener that triggers the reaction, which means that those are not a generally safe alternative.
