Mini-WTF: vrad

  • vrad, the Valve Radiosity Simulator, crashes with this message when I run it from Hammer, but only if I run it immediately after vvis (Valve Visibility Simulator) in a compile - the way it's set up by default to run:

SteamStartup() failed: SteamStartup(0xf,0x0033F014) failed with error 1: failed to take master pipe connection lock

For some reason, a 3d light simulator that can be run on a headless machine needs to communicate with Steam, a game distribution system.

It seems that Valve doesn't want anyone to use their map compiler without a license. You know, the map compiler that only accepts input from their editor and outputs files that can only be read by their engine.

I assume it's because Valve includes it as part of the Source SDK, which (you guessed it) requires you to own at least one Valve game before you can install it.  Which is a moot point now, since everyone owns Team Fortress 2 since it went F2P.

Anyway, the Source SDK is currently busted for HL2:DM, DoD:S, CS:S, and as of later today TF2. This is a known issue and will be fixed later according to Valve's Fletcher Dun, who seems to be the head of "Source 1 Games" team which are the four games previously mentioned.

  • That's the worst bug in vrad you could think of? You clearly haven't been working with it for long.

  • The Source SDK breaks every few weeks, it seems they either don't test it at all or do a really piss poor job of it. TRWTF is that updating it for newer games breaks support for older ones. How that works is a mystery that still eludes me.

But yeah, I digress. I got out of Source modding because of all the technical problems.

  • Sounds typical.  Although I don't use the SDK, I read about the woes from the GoldenEye: Source team. --- which is an excelent game, BTW, and free.

+1. I was disappointed though that they only did the multiplayer. Fun, but I thought briefly they re-created the old campaign. Haven't gotten to play that since my cartridge bought the farm... :'(
