  • If I have to listen to my boss refer to ISS anymore, I might cry.  He doesn't even know he's using the wrong acronym.  Of course, he could be referring to the International Space Station

Also, I've been asked when (because sometimes it should and sometimes it shouldn't) the word "Coming" has 2 "m"s in it.  Other than when you're 5 years old - I really don't know.

And he was explaining why it'd be better to put up a PDF document on a webpage instead of a Word Document, which of course is because a Word Document is "directly edible", and that's not very safe for people to be able to just download a Word Document and change it if they want.

The list goes on and on, and I try to hold it all in, but I'm in a terrible mood this morning and needed to vent.  Please, someone post similar stories.....

  • A few years ago, working on a large series of interconnected Sql Server 7 dB's on the same instance Sql Server box, we found we were having disk space issues. Basically the huge DTS that ran weekly, (and I'm not going to scare you with what it did) was using so much Temp Db space the disk on the Sql Server box was filling up and everything was falling over.

    We had to have a meet with the ops guys so along we went, with my boss. His suggestion, at the meeting, in front of all of us and the ops guys was in order to save money;

'Can't we use some disk space from the ICL mainframe to beef up the Sql Server box?'

You're lucky, your boss only thinks he knows about one technology!

That's really funny. I love it when you correct them, and they could careless, saying "IIS? ISS? What's the difference?" I end up picturing a screen shot of the IIS MMC snap-in juxtaposed with a gigantic floating thing in space.

Let's see, a favorite for me. A PM-like guy I worked with once was very opposed to using .NET. He thought that it would limit our client systems too much. Afterall, what if they wanted .COM or .ORG for their website? No matter how many times we explained it, he still couldn't get it. He also couldn't understand the difference between the old (ASP3) and the new (.NET), so we just ended up calling it "Microsoft". That's right, we programmed our applications in Microsoft. It was a good language.

  • roflol.  effing halarious.

  • I was present in a senior mgmt meeting once where a director of development actually said  "Development lifecycles are only good/applicable for three years."

What he failed to realize was that his platform had been in development for almost five years at that point.

    Another favorite quote:

"We don't have time to do it right, but we have time to do it over."

Here I thought it was a new name for RSS. =p  Ahahaa, Microsoft language. =D

    My fairly computer-literate boss manages to consistently mangle any binary-ish numbers. 348. 266. 520. 124. (ie, usually when referring to ram.) He also has a lot of unique ideas and terms for stuff that come from a patchy home-grown knowledge of running servers. I have a very strong smile-and-nod inclination, so even when people might appreciate being corrected I usually don't (unless they just misheard me), and then I'll sometimes look stupid if someone else does. ;_;

  • Something else that drives me insane.........we do web dev/design, and my boss had his own 1 man company, before working here, designing webpages. (needless to say, it failed).  But he still has a copy of his company's website where he had all the "demos" of the really fancy, cutting edge, mind-blowing effects he could achieve in Flash. (none of them actually practical - just bells and whistles).  I was going through a book about a year back, and wouldn't you know it...............Chapters 1 to 11 are the exact (color and everything) products he had on his website as things he could offer.  Heaven forbid someone want something even slightly original and new.  Unless there's a book out or someone else has done it so he can steal it, there's not much he can do.  But yes, please pay him triple my salary.............

Alex, you should add a "I hate my job/boss" forum.............I could go on and on.

Except that I use kword http://www.koffice.org/kword/ on my systems.  I have no problems opening and editing PDF documents, but anything in microsoft word format can be trouble.  You may think all the world is Microsoft Windows, but there are a few exceptions here and there to much up your works.

  • I once had a discussion with someone who insisted there's difference between a
real-world object's 'rotation' and its 'orientation'. I kind of
convinced him that they're pretty much synonymous, except when they
    apply to churches, apparently.

  • It's kind of a WTF that we use Visual SourceSafe at my office, but we're slowly migrating to something more stable called Subversion. In the meantime....

We have several programmers who, despite using it on a daily basis, call it SafeSource. When you run the software, you're prompted with a login dialog box that says "Visual SourceSafe Login". Then you see the "Visual SourceSafe" startup image. The caption at the top of the window says "Visual SourceSafe Explorer". Hell you have to navigate to the "Visual SourceSafe" program group in your Start menu just to run the thing!

I'd expect this from my computer un-savvy mom: "Honey do I need that Norton Personal non-Virus Anti-prevent thingee?" Not from programmers.

Also I have more than one project manager that has no idea we have multiple servers running in our office. "Just throw that file on the server". When I ask which one, they stare at me blankly. Then they tell me to put it on the Z drive. This mysterious "Z drive" is a mapped network drive on their computer. I tell them I'll just email it to them.

Oh yeah, which reminds me...A few weeks ago I had to help a girl who was having trouble emailing an attachment. Our company limits our mailbox to 100 MB (disgusting considering I get 2.6xxx GB with Gmail). Her attachment was 235 MB and she had no idea why it wouldn't send.

maybe you missed the "directly edible" part.  the fact that pdf's are editable is no secret (bossman is concerned with putting up "the most secure" option).  and as far as my company's concerned.....what else is there besides Windows?  we still put frames  and iframes in our webpages, screw with window settings, and have the most gigantic and innefficent database tables on the planet.  I think they might be in CNF -36.

Wow, what a troll. Assuming the document is intended for customer download, it makes no sense to artificially limit your customers to those that can afford the money for the latest MS Office. Even if you only intend to market to Windows users (), you should allow users of things like OpenOffice (or even old versions of MS Office!) to use your site correctly

Since you quoted my post - I am going to assume that you were calling me a troll. I see no reason why you would do that, given that the sentences that followed that statement had nothing to do with what I said. Someone who chimes in with "PDFs are editable!" obviously missed the whole point of the story in that the boss said that PDFs are edible! And I believe that the reason that point was missed because the idea that PDFs are editable is a new one to the poster who made the assertion.

Any other names you want to call me for no reason?

Hank didn't "chime in" saying PDFs are editable. He mentioned that PDFs are more compatible than the .doc format, and therefore should be preferred. This is verifiably true.

  • My old boss was convinced the phone company put in special lines for the fax machines, and that mixing them with phone lines could break something.  It didn't help that he did some of the bad wiring himself, and water would get in and cross the lines, which would be blamed on the equipment or imaginary abuses thereof.

He also had a novel way of storing unused hardware:  all the power adapters for all the phones, printers, computers, fax machines etc in one giant box, all the other cables in another box, all the phones in another box, all the manuals in another box.   The idea was "if you put stuff that looks alike together dispite any lack of relevance, its organized" but of course it made it hell to find the right adapter for any given appliance.

I never complained for fear of being asked to re-sort it myself, and undoubtedly in an even worse manner.  Did I mention in less than two years, the "two offices" moved four times, even breaking leases, just to "reorganize" efficiently?

As far as I know, KOffice is the only major suite to edit PDFs well (MS Office barely does with a beta plugin, OO.o doesn't). There are other tools to edit PDFs, but not in an office suite.

The editability of PDFs is far less known than you would think. Most people's experience with PDFs is through Acrobat Reader, or through the word->PDF exporter. This tends to make them think PDFs are like CDs - make them once, they'll always be the same.

You're still missing the whole point. The original post was not making

any moron who chimes in with "PDFS ARE EDITABLE AND I KNOW HOW AND

If you say, "My hamster can't fly." or "My hamster can fly." and
someone replies, "Your hamster can walk." then, as true as that may be,
it has no place in the discussion. I hope this example is simple enough
    for even you to understand.

Well I did miss the point.  The idea that someone would consider
eating any document format, no matter how stupid they are, is so
foreign to my experience that when I saw a word that started with ed in
that context I automatically assumed editable, not edible.  My
    mistake.

How do you eat any document format btw?   I'm curious now.

I was not intending to say I'm an elitist.   I'm well aware
that koffice has major limitations compared to Microsoft
products.  OTOH, considering how rarely I need that functionality,
Microsoft office isn't worth the cost to me.   I put the link
in only because koffice is such a niche product that I would not expect
most people to have any clue what it is.  (and I unless/until it
is ported to Microsoft Windows I don't expect this to change)

Like most people, my exposure to pdf is through acrobat
reader.   AFAIK, even the pay versions of acrobat do not
allow editing a pdf, but you can annotate them somehow - but I don't
use the pay versions so I'm not sure exactly how this works (and I could be wrong).

Um, if you have open office you have roughly the equivalent functionality of office xp for free. This includes a browser plugin for several major browsers. And no one ever said anything about latest version?

The idea that anyone would consider it a good idea to integrate PDF documents as opposed to word docs or any other bizarre non-html format (look on the bright side, he could require two activex plugins, a custom windows software download, and a java class to read and/or print the page) into a web site is a big clue that they don't really CARE about the customer though.

Pay versions of Acrobat have always allowed editing capabilities, although rather limited compared to real word-processing (you want Pagemaker for that). Recent free reader versions let you annotate.

And he was explaining why it'd be better to put up a PDF document on a webpage instead of a Word Document, which of course is because a Word Document is "directly edible", and that's not very safe for people to be able to just download a Word Document and change it if they want.

PDFs need to be cooked before consumption.

There's one I used to work for who insisted on using Microsoft software for almost everything. When asked about his opinion of Linux, he replied "I don't like penguins."

Why are we only allowed 3 troll votes per day ? Dick Nixon posts more often than that...

"We"? You're one person. You have 3 troll votes per day. Use them as you like. Just because you don't like what I have to say, doesn't mean you should have the authority to mark all my posts as trolls. If you ask me, you've demonstrated that you can't handle 3. After all, you're targetting individuals rather than the content of the post.

Do I upset you because I'm smarter than you or did I do something else?

    Sincerely,

  • This thread used to put a smile on my face and put a happy, warm feeling in my loins. Finally I found others who shared my plight of having inept coworkers who had more decision-making power, made tons more money, but had the intelligence of a box of hair.

Now that warm feeling in my loins has disappeared, replaced with the unending agony of having a professional wrestler beat me in the crotch with a metal folding chair.

Keep your flame wars and pissing contests to another forum guys. Somebody post some more funny shit before I bleed from my backdoor.

If I have to listen to my boss refer to ISS anymore, I might cry.  He doesn't even know he's using the wrong acronym.

When my department finally got sophisticated enough to get separate servers for QA, my boss continually referred to them as "Q and A" servers.  Some of my team members saying it as well, probably because they didn't want to contradict him.  Finally, one day in a team meeting after listening to several references to "Q and A", I asked, "Okay, I need to get something straight.  Are we talking about Quality Assurance -- QA -- or are we talking about Questions and Answers -- Q and A?"

His diplomatic reply:  "As long as everybody knows we're talking about the Q and A servers, we're okay."

I have that at home. One for T, one for A, and one for D. You figure it out.

And what's wrong with pregnant chicks? It's like Jay always said: "We figure an abortion clinic's a good place to pick up loose women. Why else would they be here unless they like to fuck?"

No, but one time I was bound and gagged and forced to watch Bridget Jones Diary. That's bad enough in my opinion. After that, a person can easily survive a demonic leech that festers in their abdoment.

<FONT face="Courier New" size=2>you really should check it out then.  it's about babies that somehow have steak knives and bust out of the womb and go on a killing spree.  in fact, just watch the last 30 minutes of the movie unless you're an anthropologist specializing in late 80's fashion trends.  the ending is the best part.</FONT>

  • I run a project that involves a team of data entry trolls using our
software to do mundane crap.  Often, they get careless.  No
surprise there - we should expect to have our hands full in the quality
assurance department...  My customer recognizes this and keeps
asking us how we plan to perform Q&A on the data.

Like another poster, I'm a smile & nod kind of guy.  However,
the younger members of the team have picked up this bad habit of an
acronymous no-no.  When I ask them to tell me what "Q&A"
stands for, they start off cocky then fade away, saying "Uhh, like,
    quality assura....  Ohhh."

Pet peeves should be put to sleep.
