TDWTF Markov chain

  • The Tae Wong incident gave me an idea: If a spambot could convince us that it was "contributing" to a discussion, why not make a discussion generator?

    I am currently crawling the forums at the EXTREME rate of one request per second. Each page of each forum and topic will only be obtained once. If Alex wants to verify that the bot putting the TDWTF load averages above 0.09 is mine, its user-agent is BenLMarkovChainRandomRandom/1 (this should only be making one request per second at most) and its IP belongs to an ISP that is mentioned in a sidebar topic I posted.

    When this is done, the data gathered will be available as a gzipped JSON file. Given that there are about 30000 topics on the forum, this should be done within a few (<10) hours.

    The format, just in case anyone wants to write something to mess around with this data, is

    {
        "Chain": {"some text that": ["SSDS", "has", "has", "is", ...], ...},
        "PrefixLen": 3
    }

    I'm not grabbing any data about tags. This could probably be used to generate random tags, though.

    Seems like you have the colons after their names, so you'd just have to watch for one of those to come up and act accordingly. Probably a false positive here or there, but given the shenanigans around here, what difference (at this point in time) would it make? This would mean updating the markov generator, but using the existing data. It looks like you've used a demo or something from go itself, but it looks pretty basic, so it shouldn't be too tough to hack that in.

    Way back in the olden days of DOS I came across a program, I don't remember the name, but you fed it a text file and the program rearranged it.  Given a file of sufficient complexity and interesting content the results were often quite funny.  Or at least I thought so at the time.  I find Ben's to be quite disappointing.  But in all fairness, maybe it's the source material that he's working from that's the problem.  Or maybe I'm just not drunk enough to appreciate it.

    I think the effect is better in smaller doses and when you're expecting something coherent to begin with. Reading the giant wall of markov junk is like trying to read John Galt's speech. I just can't make it through the whole thing, and it all starts blending together after a bit.
