OT: At lunch today

  •

I was handed my bill - total was $8.01

my boss was handed his bill - total $8.01

He grabbed both the bills and paid with a $20.00

when the waiteress came back she said the total was $16.03 and handed back the change...

    must be that new math???

  • Don't fret about it. This is all part of an elaborate computer system designed to navigate a star ship.

    (Had to be said.)

  • It's a scam.  She's getting rich one cent at a time...

  • They must be using fractional cents. 8.013 + 8.013 = 16.026 ~ 16.03

  • yes, but........

Both of you ordering the same thing while the two of you sit at the same table giggling and talking about memories past?  Priceless.

Not exactly.   They told the computer to combine the
orders.   If your sales tax is 6% (which it is in my state,
but of course this varies from state to state), then your order came
out to 7.56 + 0.453 tax, which rounds down to 8.01.
When you add the orders together it comes out to 7.56 * 2 =
15.12.   Tax is 0.907, which rounds up to 0.91, for a total
of 16.03.   Your state just made an extra penny off of
you.   If you care you can demand they not combine the
orders, but personally I wouldn't call it worth the bother.
