A hardware user's WTF

• I wasn't sure whether to laugh or cry when I saw this:

• I think i started crying and laughing at the same time.

• It's not entirely stupid though; the Dell Dimension 2350 only has PCI
slots. The user bought a PCIe card, not noticing the "e", or not
realising that the difference between PCIe and PCI is massive. Then,
applying logic that is reasonable in other fields, he cut off the
excess, hoping to turn a PCIe card into a PCI card.

This WTF is a strong argument for making sure that things with similar
appearance and function have very different names; the user would
hopefully have had a better chance of realising that AGP and PCI are
different (or that PCI and NGC are different) than that PCI and PCIe
are different.

Hopefully what you mean by "other fields" is something like... a tailoring business for instance ;)

I've never seen a circumstance (*in modern times) where a pair of scissors or a hacksaw + any kind of computer equipment = a good idea!

*With a 5 1/4 floppy that has a damaged sleeve you can cut the sleeve off and put it into a drive naked and be able to copy your data off of it. Or the good 'ole days of the commodore 64 where cutting a notch in a floppy was the way to write data on the other side of it.

• The name similarity is just going to happen - they're too similar not
to. (Much like PCI-X.) The big mistake was in using the same slot
configuration with an extension, which is just bound to cause some
confusion when the buses are entirely different. There was an ISA
expansion that was backward compatible with real ISA, just slower if
you put the extended ISA card in a regular slot, that was cool.
Instead, they should have done what AGP did and changed the slot bar
location - then it's obvious that something is the wrong shape.

lot's of 'OMGWTFBBQLOL ur dum' crap on those boards apparently :)

I beg to differ. PCI-X is similar to PCI; it just
introduces higher clock rates. The extension connector for 64-bit is
part of plain PCI. Had the card been a PCI-X card, what the user did
would have had a good chance of working, as PCI-X cards usually work
fine in 32-bit slots, at 33MHz or 66MHz. Obviously, it would have been
slower, but it would have worked.

That's what I meant, in a roundabout fashion, actually. I just used ISA
as an example because it wasn't until after I posted that I found some
sites detailing extended PCI configurations, what works and what
doesn't.

Good point about negotionation, I'll have to remember it in case I ever see it.

• oooooowwww damn WTF was he thinking. freken idiot. that had to cost a lot of money . what a dumbaA#S

how could u thing thaT . MAN I WOULD kill someone if i did that to mine and mine is just a 5500 nvidia . i dont think he can take that back anymore.

i bought a second 5500 one to have dual screens and it worked fine but i decited to take it back and i got all my money back in cash. SWEET!!!

is it just me or have you got a high caffeine / sugar diet??

anyway, in a hardware course i took, we had a teacher that was an asshole like that guys friend.

he decided that teaching was forcing us to make the mistakes that make people learn.

we had 2 people go to hospital due to electrocution. that was during the first lesson.
