Recruiter Deja vu

  • I was sitting at my desk today when the phone rings. Caller ID is from a recruitment agency I'm currently ducking so I divert it to voice mail. Not 30 seconds later, the same number comes up again. So I divert it once again.

Just checked the voice mail. The first message is trying to get me to leave my current job. The second is trying to get me hire candidates. Both are from the same guy who I had never worked with before.

WTF #1: Since when do recruiters call your business line to entice you to leave?

WTF #2: Did the guy realize that he dialed the same number twice?

Hey, elamberton? I heard there's a great opening working for a guy called elamberton, you might be interested. This place has competitive salary, great benefits, and a fun work environment. You're really missing out if you don't take this opportunity. Anyway, if you're interested, please give me a call!

Hey, elamberton? There's a great developer looking for work you might be interested in. He's got 8 years experience developing with WPF, 10 years experience with MongoDB, and over 20 years experience with Java.NET MVC. He's also a very fast learner so he's willing to learn any other technologies you may use. He's really a great guy to work with so you should give me a call!

I'd work for myself but I don't think I can afford me.

We've had trouble with #1 here at work as well. I laughed my ass off when my coworker got one of these calls, went on a little, "You know, how did you get this number? I'm not comfortable with this and feel it's unprofessional, don't call me anymore" tirade... not 5 minutes later the guy's -boss- calls back and apologizes and wants to know what it would take to get back on my coworker's good side, to which he replied, "Stop calling me at work!" and hung up.

Since then, no more calls here. They just buzz the hell out of our cells.

What makes you think he did? Dollars to donuts he was using an autodialer.

I've had a couple that have managed to make it past the firewall by blatantly lying to her about the purpose of the call.

I'm sticking with Python on Rails until Java.NET has support for HTML6.

I got one of those calls here at work recently. Since I'm in a small office, I had to politely let the person know that he should not phone me at work.So I envy your coworker's fun.

However, the thing that bugged me the most was that I didn't put my work number anywhere on my resume, on my profile, on my cover letter. That means that the recruiter took my resume, saw where I was currently working, 411'd the number, called the front desk, pulled up the company directory, got my extension, then phoned me.

From hints.txt: "If you have to work that hard to get someone's phone number, its because you shouldn't be phoning it."

I got an e-mail from a recruiter that said: "I wasn't sure whether or not it was safe to call you or not so I decided to e-mail you instead." I was very glad she did. I don't envy you or CodeNinja's coworker...

That's exactly what they are doing. It's gotten so bad here that the front desk has instructions to take down the name/number of anyone calling in who doesn't know the extension of their party and who is calling from an unregistered number (IE: Not a known customer). She then tells them that we'll call them back, because we're, 'In a meeting'.

ObNitpick: Unless the OP's situation involved the recruiter skyping, it's not déjà vu ("already seen") it's déjà entendu ("already heard").

In the case of your e-mailing recruiter, it would be déjà lu ("already read").

I suppose when you say decimated you really mean reduced by one tenth.

Did you hear about the football team whose bus got into an accident? It killed half of the team. They were decimated by that accident.
