Fox news reports from where the sun don't shine

  • As reported in Slate (and probably quite a few other places by now) Fox News Claims Solar Won't Work in America Because It's Not Sunny Like Germany

The Fox "expert" actually said that the reason that the German solar power industry is viable and that it is failing in the US is all to do with Germany having more sunshine than the US - see the end of the video in the article. And also note the use of "Natural Gas" in almost every second sentence - I smell "agenda" written all over this piece.

TRWTF is referring to a reporter as an expert in anything, ever.

Yes. But I'm less certain about MSNBC. So...how much Fox News have you actually watched?

Quite a lot back in my day of satellite TV.

Highly entertaining. We would play "what does that mean for us?" and "here's an expert who can tell us about it... I understand you have a book out" bingo.

Like anyone who has to fill so much air time with "news," the programming is very uneven. Many of the hosts are kinda dumb (just like on any other channel). The only show I ever really watch any more is "Special Report," which has been the best hour of political / national / international news for a long time. Oh, and "Red Eye," of course.

  • Saw a bumper sticker the other day:

I get my comedy from: Fox News

I get my news from: Comedy Central

Pretty much sums it up . . .

It's a career path for many, though.

Mobile right now so I'm not going to try to link it. But a study last year showed that Fox News watchers were the least informed, and people who watched Comedy Central's The Daily Show were more informed than Fox viewers. I'll link the study later. (And yes, I'm well aware the Germans didn't bomb Pearl Harbor.)

I recall the study. Everyone performed pretty abysmally. I guess you can rely on social "science" like that to determine what you watch, but The Daily Show is certainly at least as biased as anything on Fox. I stand by the fact that Special Report is the best daily news show on TV. A lot of their shows aren't really news (and have never claimed to be, aside from the fact that they're on a channel with "News" in the name), and I suspect those sorts of shows were what people were mainly watching. I guess next you'll claim that O'Reilly, Geraldo and Greta are hard core Tea Partiers, or something.

    Forget it, I'm rolling.

You may know world history, but you're woefully ignorant of classic 20th century cinema.

Here's one article on it. You are correct; answering less than two questions correctly of five is poor indeed. But for anyone who hadn't heard about it, that was the origin of the bumper sticker.

In the spirit in which you say it, yes, I agree. But it seems many people don't pay attention to, or don't acknowledge consciously, that every statement made has a bias or a slant to it. I had a huge argument with my brother on this one. He tells me that he "looks for the facts" in a story. But "the unemployment rate is 10%" has a different connotation to it than "the employment rate is 90%." One comes across as pretty negative, the other comes across as pretty positive. But both state the same fact. "I make $100 per hour" comes across one way vs "I make $208,000 per year".

You will never get rid of bias or slant. You can blow it up to ridiculous proportions (Rush Limbaugh anyone?) but you can never get rid of it.

    Don't watch them. Wouldn't know.

    I feel old.

I was wanting to finish my Bachelor's a couple of years ago; one of the prereqs was a speech class. One day, while waiting for the instructor, we (the class) got into a conversation about lawyers. I asked a young lady next to me (I presume 18 - 20 YO), "Have you seen My Cousin Vinny?" "No." "Oh. Well, do you know who Joe Pesci is?" "No."

    I feel OOOOOOOOOOoooooooold.
