It's not possible to compare SSDS with any competing system based on features or architecture, as many of the critics here attempt to do.
Sure, Windows is now chock full of met-duh-data and search/index features. In theory, there ought to be no more need for anything like SSDS. And yet SSDS is thriving; why?
The answer speaks to the difference between on-paper performance engineered by "perfect perfects" who quickly moved on to another project, and real world performance engineered by a developer with a vision and a passion for his product (outside of the "coolness" of his toolsuite or the assignment du jour).
In particular, I'd point to quality and input latency as distinguishing SSDS factors.
Windows 7 attempts to index all of my movies and pictures at the whole-computer level... similar to SSDS. The problem is that this functionality is so feature-laden that it ends up being slow and buggy.
The difference between 500 milliseconds and two seconds is real; if Windows Search can find what I'm looking for, but it's slow enough that my thought process is interrupted, I don't want to use it.
I'd rather use something like SSDS. Yes, it's keystroke based... but once I know the shortcuts, they flow naturally into my work process. Something that takes longer than about 1/2 second to navigate to its next step is basically worthless to me. I work (and think) too fast for all of that.
Besides that, Windows gets search and met-duh-data flat out wrong too much of the time. Try putting two albums named "Greatest Hits" on the same hard drive in Windows. Or, try storing photos in a folder that's not "My Pictures." Both of these seemingly simple actions will wreak havoc with Windows Explorer.
Five years from now, the people who wrote Windows 7 search and indexing code will be working on something completely different, and would probably be horrified by that old search/indexing code. That's just the life of a young, ambitious developer.
Windows 8 will have its own search/index system, and Microsoft will assure us that it will revolutionize the way we blah, blah, blah our blah blah; but it, too, will just be the half-baked product of ambitious young developers who quickly moved on (and probably use something like Cygwin "find" or "dir /s" instead of Explorer anyway... if they even use Windows on their own).
SpectateSwamp, on the other hand, is in it for the long haul, and actually eats his own metaphorical dog food. If you don't like SSDS, that's fine. But unlike the vast majority of alternatives, there's at least some chance it will evolve into something you can actually use.
There's almost nothing in Windows Explorer I'd say that about. Explorer is like the weather... if you don't like it, give it a little time, and it will change. You still probably won't like it, though.
Personally, I'm tired of having my Explorer keyboard shortcuts disappear... the slick ads full of young people in office attire singing Kum-bay-ah that accompany these semi-annual insults do nothing to actually help me out. Nobody's going to save the world with a computer, especially one running Windows.
SSDS is a fundamentally less ambitious system, targeted at a more knowledgeable user base, BUT IT WORKS. It won't crash, thrash your hard disk, or revolutionize your world (SpectateSwamp's outlandish claims aside; he has to market, too).
What SSDS will do is provide you with an alternative desktop navigation tool whose behavior is PREDICTABLE. That alone puts it in the top 1% of applications, in my book. The other 99% are victims of their own "perfect perfect" specifications (which address every issue except actual useability) and of the relentless trendiness of the IT industry.

You know, as annoying as Spectate is, at least he actually believes the stuff he spews. He's not a troll in classic sense, because he has the courage of his (insane) convictions, although he does enjoy "riling people up". Windows 8 has pretty much the same search/index system as 7, and the search UI is even pretty much the same (with a few improvements) in desktop mode. But you probably knew that. You are also ignoring the fact that 7's search/indexing code was really just a refinement of what they started in Vista. And even XP had indexing. So your "five-year" figure was pretty much pulled out of thin air, as were all your implications about 7's search/indexing code being some sort of trendy flash in a pan.@bridget99 said:

What does this even mean? Personally, I've never seen any computer ads from any vendor where people were singing kumbayah (either literally or metaphorically), or claiming to save the world, except maybe those ads for IBM global services. For the 2nd time in a couple weeks I have made good use of the CP function. First was my Aunt died and I wanted to pull the pictures of her out of the family album. The CP function did that in a few minutes. Moving 33 of them to another folder where I could create a DVD (tv format) for her family. Next I was helping a friend organize His computer - like I have mine - But they have 4000 pics scattered all over. That's the MINOR problem. It would take hours sitting there and hitting enter enter to move them to a USB stick. So the minor change to the CP function that has a "doall" besides the "Y" and "N" for each picture. Sharing just gets easier and easier.

Yeah, it was successful, in the sense that I wasted time writing that post. Although you are (slightly) trolling me now, I can honestly say I was not enraged or mad, and in no way am I an Explorer fanboy. (I don't even like Windows 8, BTW.) A truly successful troll would fool people into thinking he was sincere (), not just annoy them.

Google Catches Faster than Light UFO Cotton Ball!
I took a business trip to Providence a little while ago to attend a conference, and went to Google to get directions to the convention center. Right on Google Maps it had this mysterious object that would spook any white hooded crow that was nearby.
See that white thing floating in the center?
What could it be? When I went to the location, I didn't see it up in the sky, so it had to have disappeared after Google Street View took it. It kind of looks like a cotton ball, but I want SpectateSwamp's expert advice.

People laughed and laughed a thousand comments back about my use of blank_screen.jpg. At the time I didn't like the background from the last video showing up when I was displaying text from a background job. Now I'll use background jobs to display the text on top of the video. What a feature that is. I would still like to do the text on top of the video without having to call another task. But it's OK for now. So you can expect another screen reshoot showing off this Hidden feature.
Video without commentary / captioning soon loses relevance.

No it's just light distortion from the shockwaves coming from that cotton ball.
Although it takes a pretty hefty pulse to distort air like that so I'm wondering how that picture was taken.

Wow... I never noticed that... I habitually always keep my navigation path the same as my absolute path so that my mouse back button is always up, as a result it appeared to always mean up to me. Thanks

Incidentally, this is why users rightfully complained when Microsoft got rid of the Up button in Windows Vista (and 7). (Microsoft explained that users were supposed to use the breadcrumbs instead. I guess users complained loudly enough, because the Up button is back in Windows 8.)
You can restore the Up button to Vista/7 by installing Classic Shell.

Swampies in all elections should start pressing their representatives with RANDOM questions. Questions that the Chamber of Commerce or Electoral College would never ASK...I currently have over 60 of the required 75 signatures... Registered political party candidates don't have this requirement.
