All ready for the launch of Left 4 Dead 2

Apparently my Steam client has already downloaded 99% of Left 4 Dead 2, so it will be unlocked and ready for play on the official release day, which is in about minus three years. Boy I can't wait!

Likely cause: I switched to a different Steam user who didn't have the game while it was in the middle of an update. I tried clicking "Cancel pre-loading" (since it was stuck at 99%) but it warned me that it would "delete the partially downloaded data" and I'd rather not find out if it actually deletes the whole game.

  • You know Valve's job site has a "pitch us your job if we have no open positions for you" form. I filled it in saying I could help them debug and fix the bugs and usability flaws in Steam. Never hard back.

I bet nobody ever reads those.

I think you only get a job if you can actually fix bugs. Not just whine about everything.

It doesn't matter. They don't read that stuff because the form is buggy.

The sampling range for witnesses of blakeyrantings and blakeybugfixing doesn't necessarily overlap, so, both aren`t comparable, at least not by us. Unless there are colleagues of his in this forum, but minor deviations from the average norm are to be discarded, or so I was told.

  •  Maybe you could write dialog for them.

Imagine a blakeyrant core for GladOS.

I can see all sorts of wtfs here:

    1. Other than for F2P games, only owned games should show up in that account's library.
    2. Games that have had free weekends in the past (such as L4D2) sometimes show up in your game library if another account has it installed.
    3. It will never get past 99% because Steam thinks it's preloading.  The last part of a pre-load download is downloaded later for the final unlocking process.

Obvious question: Have you tried the Continue or Close buttons?

Actually, I think that's how FireSlash got hired by Valve... he used to run TF2Items and now works on Valve's web APIs.  I'll have to ask him about it.

  • Yeah but did he contact them, or did they contact him?

Tell him everybody things Steam is a buggy mess, and nobody can figure out DOTA2 without any kind of guidance or tutorial.

    • All installed content shows up for all accounts, as well as any content your account is licensed for but isn't installed.
    • Content that's installed but that you don't have a license for will show up as "Preload complete". If you've been running Steam continuously since a free weekend ended, it will instead read "License Expired".
    • In the preloading window, you can click Continue, but it will (usually silently) fail with a No Subscription error.
    • Clicking Close will close the preloading window, but the game will still appear in your library and downloads window as "Preloading paused".

Hey Dummy, FireSlash works on TF2Stats, not TF2Items.  TF2Items was Drunken_F00l (who also works at Valve, but you don't know him).

  • You mean the Left 4 Dead gold? It's a fun game but I'm so pissed Valve released it not even a year after I threw down $50 for the L4D Public Beta, and I had to buy it all over again.

Actually, it was exactly a year as both had their original release on October 17th.

But yeah, it took them long enough to get the beta levels working in Gold... until earlier this year!
