  • Must be a joke???

    hi,

i want to build my general knowledge. first of all:

the earliest versions of windows were dos based. the next load where nt
based. windows xp, however, doesn't go into any of those categories. c#
cannot write os's but it can write lots of other stuff. i could write
internet explorere or notepad. where they writen in c# for win xp? and what
is win xp based on e.g. dos or kernel?

    secondly:

.dll files are class libraries. i have seen people referring to them as
standard DLLs. this sounds to me as if dll stands for something. what?

I'm on a roll with quotes today.

  • Mark Rae handles it well.

of someone interested in learning about something, specially when they
(obviously) do not know enough about it.

people should research before they ask a question though if only enough to figure out if theyre asking the right question to the right person. Asking a valid question to the wrong group of people is only the same as never asking the question at all.

Well, excuse me for assuming, as this poor chap did, that asking a question in a public forum is considered research.

    Greets,

I absolutely agree with you; there are people out there who don't know where to start when it comes to where to 'point' their questions.  It does become painfully obvious when one says "try asking [here] instead".  I tend to think the person asking the question usually poses it in the forum where they've either; a) seen more questions like theirs answered more often with success; or b) just sees more activity of answer-per-question ratio.

Regardless, I've seen legitimate struggles for knowledge met with the response (on Usenet, message boards and IRC) "go read a book", only to find that the person couldn't recommend the book they should reference directly or even give them any further clues on where to search.  Perhaps it is just my own experience, but it seemed several years ago that Usenet and IRC were very good forms of information transfer.

I imagine over time some of the 'veterans' of those haunts will get tired of answering the same questions over and over again; however; that is probably a sign that they need to move onto something a little more substantive, allow their prodigies to cater to those who have questions and keep from letting the knowledge flow.

    Regards,

    Joe

    c# cannot write os's

Actually you can write an OS in C#.  Two MS developers have written a kernel, but it lackso a GUI.  They talked about it in a Channel 9 video.  They have also given a presentation on the subject, and for the slideshow they screen captured their PowerPoint slide, compiled them into the kernel and let their OS serve as the slide show displayer.

Obviously now a kernel, they can begin writing other things such as a GUI and such, but keep in mind it's a research project, not something they intend to sell.

But I wouldn't be surprised if MS fiddles with rewriting the NT kernel in C# as there have been arguements saying how it would be better than the NT kernel we have now.

  • In the above case would be to give the NOOB that the posted site is way
over his head and here are some some good beginner sites to
go.   If he picks it up, well and good.  If he doesn't,
well he will have to find another hobby.    Doesn't do
one any good to be a jerk about such things.

If I was a jerk about people using "NOOB" (or any derivative/alternate spelling), would you stop using it?

    Mr. <ahem> President,

My point was, it's no good to tell him to snottily tell him to RT#M or
some other useless piece of non-advice that will just add irritation
onto frustration.  It's better to nicely provide a few basic sites
and send him on his way.

As far as using NOOB or its derivations, only the profoundly sensitive
would take offense at it.  After all, we've all been NOOBs at one
time or another and no doubt will be so again.

Why did you repeat your point? What in my reply made you think that I didn't follow your great and wonderful statement?

My only quarrel with your post was the use of "NOOB"; I would prefer
not to see things like that, pr0n, M$, et cetera. I am not arguing at
all with the fact that people can and should be labelled as new-comers
and informed of their status. What I am discussing is the childish
label that you've decided to use. It makes you look stupid and I prefer
not to interact with stupid people. If you at least refrain from using
"NOOB", I can create the illusion in my mind that you are not stupid.
So, again - don't use "NOOB" ever again. Thank you and have a nice day.

    Sincerely,

    Richard Nixon

"NOOB" is not a word! Now you're just trying to ruin my day. That's shameful emptyset, truly shameful.

My goodness, such arrogance to dictate to a
fellow poster on an open forum what terminology not to use!
If you were a forum admin, you would have that right.  Since
(thankfully) you are not, here is a suggestion.  If you
don't like what I post, by all means click on the troll button and you
    will not  be further disturbed.

Why did your original reply contain a repeat of your incredibly clever
point? You never answered my question regarding why you thought that I
    needed that repeated for me.
