WTF is wrong with this map?

  • google map of europe

Hint, zoom in one notch and look at the difference.

  • I need more hints [*-)]

  • So do I...

  • Belgium and The Netherlands switch???

  • Wow that's pretty weird, I didn't even notice it until fleco pointed it out. This is probably the result of automated text deconfliction. At least, that's what they call it in my office. We produce various types of maps, and the names sometimes overlap due to their close proximity.

We manually go through the maps and move the names around so they fit better, because using an automated process can yield results like this. The names probably fit better in this case, and they're within the tolerance set for how far the name can be from its location...except there's just this one little problem with moving the names.

  • "just move 'em where you want 'em."  not only works for the game of pool but cartography too...

It's also kind of fun to use their driving directions when it takes you through a tunnel, especially if you switch to satellite mode (not really a WTF, but it did amuse me)..., "ummm, why am I driving through these buildings and football field instead of using a road?"  To see what I'm talking about, try mapping directions from 600 Grant St, 15219 to 2305 E Carson St., 15203, switch to Satellite mode and zoom in.  Look for the football field (Duquesne University) just north of the bridge.

And don't forget the fact that only the British islands get more details as you zoom in, the rest of Europe keeps on stating country names while England gets city names and roads drawn.

No, it's we have no roads or city names in the Netherlands. we all live underground and go everywhere by mountainbike. didn't you know that?

Is Google just not done with the maps of Europe? Keep zooming in and you never get any roads; in fact if you zoom in far enough, you get red X's for unavailable pieces of the maps. Of course, it is still in beta...

On the other hand, Google Earth gives a lot more road detail...

  • Hmm. Well.. Liechtenstein is not supposed to border Switzerland.

Mabye they payed Google to have it hidden...
