While we're on the subject of Steam glitches...

  • The Tools section contains games and no tools.
The Media section contains games and tools and no media.
The Games section contains the same content as the Tools section.
The Games category of the Media section contains dedicated servers, which are normally under Tools.

  • What Tools section? And aren't those categories ones YOU created and put tools/games into?

  •  @blakeyrat said:

No, the Steam Library contains a dropdown for Games, Media, Tools, and Downloads next to the Search box; you can see it's set to Media in the screenshot.  The first 3 are categorized by Valve.  Games is self-explanatory. Media is supposed to contain any videos you've downloaded from Steam.  Tools is supposed to contain everything else; mainly various dedicated servers for games you own and things like Source Movie Maker.  Downloads is just the current download progress for anything you're currently downloading from Steam.

There may be an Applications section now, since that was added to the Steam Store a few weeks back... I'm not at a computer that has Steam at the moment to check

Last time I had Tools I wanted to use, these categories worked correctly.  That was before Applications were added to the store, though.

Unless you're using the word "categorized" in a different way than the Steam UI uses it, this is not true. The only category you get automatically is "installed" vs. "not-installed".

  • The section is called All Software and all the sections are working right for me. The OP's issue might be the big picture beta, a corrupt Clientregistry.blob file or a corrupt AppUpdateStats.blob file.

I'm using it in its linguistic sense, but feel free to continue to use your pedantry if it makes you feel important.

  • I don't read minds. If you're talking about Windows and you say "bar", I'll assume you mean "toolbar" and not "a place where people gather to drink beverages." Duh, right?

  • I'm not sure why I don't have Big Picture mode. Probably because Steam detected I have a multi-monitor setup and was polite enough to not try canabilizing a screen at the expense of the others.

Now if only Valve's games were as considerate...

    I have it, and not only do I have a multi-monitor setup, but I have a non-rectangular multi-monitor setup.

Did you opt into Steam Betas? Sounds like you didn't.

In that case it turns out WTF is that Valve is actively marketing beta software as if it were gold.

I'm not installing the beta to test it because I dislike running beta-quality software.

Especially since we're *this* close to Steam for Linux. OTOH, it's not here yet of course, and God only knows how many WTF's per kilobyte that will turn out to be.

  • @toon said:

    Every. single. one.

  • I can confirm that I'm seeing the same problem as BenL.

    • All Games, All Software, Recent, Installed, Favorites, and Downloads are functioning properly. (Favorites is mostly untested since I don't do that starring thing.)
    • Media produces the same view and auto-categorization as Installed, but also includes the former contents of Tools under the Games auto-category and includes content I'm subscribed to but haven't installed. It does not show any media.
    • Tools produces the same view and auto-categorization as Installed, but also includes content I'm subscribed to but haven't installed. It does not show any tools or media.
    • Big Picture works correctly for the categories it offers, but does not offer any media, tools, or software; this is by design.
    • The category counts are accurate; it seems only the displayed grid is inaccurate. Installed media files and tools can be launched from the "media" and "common" folders, respectively, in the SteamApps folder. Further, new media can be found in the Steam Store and downloaded/updated, and launched from the Downloads page. It's merely impossible to launch media from the grid.
    • I can't find anything about this issue in the Steam Forums or Steam Support. I imagine this problem was introduced within this week. I did find something else, however.
This is apparently unrelated to the Client Registry blob or whether you're using Wine. I don't know if the same problem applies to the Linux or Mac Steam clients. I only hope that this gets fixed soon.

Oh for fuck's sake, what the fuck is wrong with you Linux people? Do you HAVE to be mentally ill to run Linux? I somehow missed that in the Ubuntu docs? Why would you not mention that!

Not since the update that supports Software came out. "Installed" vs. "Not installed" has gone away. Instead, in the Recent view, content is automatically categorized by date, and in all other views, content is should be automatically categorized into "Games", "Software", "Tools", and "Media" if you have not set a category for it yourself (and "Favorites" is a regular category that's only special in that starring content puts it there).

  • (Since I can't update my original post...)
From what I can tell from the Big Picture bug reports forum, this bug was introduced today, and Valve is not yet aware of the issue. Also, for the record...

I don't want to spend a lot of money on an OS, and I don't want to pirate an OS if I can avoid it. Since when is that considered a sign of mental illness?

The mental illness is posting a WTF about an application and not mentioning that it's running in a buggy emulator. Don't you think that information is a tiny bit important to people trying to repro the bug?

It's like the guy who calls the helpline about his monitor being blank, and forgets to mention that, oh yeah, the power's out and only his cellphone is working. It's exactly that guy. And the ironic thing is I bet Linux users sit around in their basements or drainage culvert hobo camps or Star Trek Klingon language centers or militant Libertarian militia groups or whatever and look up that guy on "the customer is not always right" and laugh their asses off.

In any case, since at least one Windows user here confirmed it and since I'm too fucking lazy to look, whatever.

You are mentally disabled for using an operating system.

I'm angry because someone posted a WTF and didn't give context. I assumed I was supposed to fix the problem as opposed to the usual "shut up and poke fun at it".

In any case, I, like most people, am too lazy to verify anything for myself. Even though I have Steam open 24/7, I never look at it because that would just be dumb.

    Simplified that for you

Well, that's all well and good but not what you said, is it? Also, Wine is not an emulator: you could almost say it's in the name of the program (albeit not very stable either; I've never gotten it to work on my box).

    @blakeyrat said:

Why should anyone want to repro the bug? it's their problem if they want to do that.

As for the rest, I guess I pretty much agree, but many desktop Linux users I know IRL, aren't your Klingon language camp types. They're probably less Linux literate than you are.

  • @blakeyrat said:

Just to be a semantic dickweed, it's a "compatibility layer," not an emulator.

Also, not really related, but one of the Wine developers wrote a pretty good article about the challenges of reverse-engineering the Windows kernel, especially when it comes to function prototypes (e.g. when all you have to go by is a program stack, it's pretty hard to tell how many arguments a given function has without extreme cleverness). Unfortunately I can't seem to find this article.

  • @toon said:

I don't give a shit about the name of the program. It emulates the Windows API. It's an emulator. It's not a CPU emulator. But it's still an emulator.

I bitch about Linux tools not because I don't know how to use them, but because they suck ass. I honestly don't know where this whole "I'm not Linux literate" thing comes from, other than someone made it up wholesale a few threads back and now a bunch of other people are repeating it because they have no capacity for independent thought.

Being a programmer who uses Linux tools daily, I actually meant that you're probably more Linux literate than average, and since you're on about Klingon whatever-you-were-on-about, you sounded like you feel desktop Linux users are a real bunch of geeks. In my personal experience, that's not true, that's all I was saying. I wasn't implying that you're not Linux literate at all. I mean, I'm not a moron: if you know how to use git, then obviously you are more Linux literate than most. My boss manages a bunch of Linux web servers, and without DirectAdmin, he's lost. You'd probably be a lot better at it than he is.

  • I know this is kinda thread hijacking, but Valve is going to rename all the .so files (the Linux equivalent of DLLs) in the Orange Box Dedicated Server for Linux in the next server update so that they have different filenames than the Team Fortress 2 Linux client.

Yes, you read that correctly: They're renaming files that will be installed to a completely different directory and likely not installed on the same machine because they will have the same name.

Did I mention that these files are shared between the server and client and should be the same files?

Edit: Forgot to mention that this change will probably break any Valve Server Plugins.

I think we all independently observed it when you started threads demonstrating your inability to use the basic package management tools of your distro and the simplest subset of git commands.

You also tend to rant about usability but usually it seems like you mean discoverability; these tools are actually quite able to be used with minimal huss-and-fuss, once you've R'd the FM. Your insistence that a manual should be unnecessary for these tasks is why people say you're unwilling to learn new things. There's really no conspiracy, but it is a bit bewildering that your reaction to systems you don't understand is to rage instead of research.

95%* of posts in this site are about people who go and start coding without bothering to learn the right way to do things first, and thereby make a huge mess. Why is the Linux shell any different?

    Weird.

At least Epic left the files well alone for Unreal Tournament Linux/Windows install. Just had "unreal.exe" and "ucc-bin" for the actual OS-dependent program.
