A WTF from Ancient History (i.e., Office 95)

  • This is a WTF I caught a long, long time ago. I've been waiting almost ten years to post this one. This comes from Word 95, but I'm pretty sure this also happened in later versions of Word. I swear I haven't altered this screenshot at all, except to blur out the text in the document...

So, what do we have here? A practical joker in the MS Office development team? A bit of debugging code that was never meant to be seen? A really bizarre Easter egg? WTF?

  • The Interface Hall of Shame contains a similar example. One tooltip
actually said something along the lines of "Read the help, stupid
user!". Apparently it wasn't supposed to be visible in the final
product, but there was a bug...

Morale: don't ever think things are under control.

  • there was another top tip there, something along the lines of : "stripes and plaids do not a fashion statement make"

  • i've seen this many times (in office 95 and 97), it has even been
translated in the localized version. however, the "run" had somehow
disappeared, and had been replaced with "work".

i liked more the tip from Warcraft II which said: "Never pet a burning dog."
