    pragnency???

First of all, anyone has a TV at home anyways. I just like to watch a
big widescreen TV. No matter if I would use it to view DVD's or not, I
would have bought that widescreen TV to begin with anyways.

Now, good DVD's will cost between 5 and 30 Euro's, depending on how new
they are. If you don't mind viewing the older movies that are about 4,
5 years old, the price is often a lot lower than the latest ones. DVD's
that cost EUR 30 now, will cost only EUR 10 in about a year or two. And
that they went down in price doesn't mean they've become any worse than
    they used to be.

But you're forgetting a few more things with your movie ticket. You go
to the theatre and pay EUR 5 to get inside. You also have to pay about
$ 1.50 for every bottle of cola you drink, EUR 2 for the bag of popcorn
if you like to eat a bit too. Then again, you can also just wait for
someone to throw some popcorn in your direction too and eat it for
free. You have to travel to the theatre and if you have a car, like me,
you'll probably end up paying several euro's just for the parking
place. And of course the gas you need for your car.

For the price of two bottles of cola in the theatre I could buy half a
gallon on cola at the supermarket. The same for chips and popcorn. In
the theatre you always get small bags, at home I can buy huge ones for
almost the same price. Worse, in the theatre you will always have to
check the date of the chips and drinks you purchase. They often tend to
sell their old stuff first. Don't be suprised to buy a bag of chips
that you could have eaten safely until last month or so.

And then the discomforts of having to go to the toilet or so. At home,
I just pause the movie, pee, and continue. At the theatre I either pee
in my pants or wait until the break and stand at the end of the queue
for the toilet. By the time I can finally pee on some dirty toilet, the
    movie probably starts again...

I love to watch movies with friends. Which is why I always invite them
at my place. And guess what? Whenever we do, we always share the costs.
I buy the movie, someone else the chips, another one the drinks.
Everyone pays a little for the fun to watch a movie at home. So
basically, my costs are pretty low. Which, for a student like me, is
pretty important. Low costs and still a lot of comfort.

Hasn't this ever happened to you? You're just watching "I, Robot" and suddenly you have to go... Two options. Either you go, ask everyone to quickly get up to let you get past or you keep sitting where you are, hoping your bladder is strong enough to keep it all in until the person next to you offers you another coke and dumb as you are, you drink it...

Such a thing never happened to you?

Never happened to me either, btw. :-) But one of the few times that I did visit the theatre, this happened to be a nasty suprise a young boy left behind at the cinema... And then I won't mention the fact that some people might also puke or fart while in the cinema. It's especially bad if there's a fat guy in the chair in front of you and he ate beans with cabbages the day before. Gas attack!!! [st] And because he's big and fat he's also blocking your view too, so all you see is this brown fog surrounding him and you just don't dare to breathe...

  • I guess Dutch cinema's just suck then.

Free parking in Belgium. No fat people ever sat in front of me (plus the seats are placed so that it wouldn't really matter). Yeah the food is expensive, so I just don't eat much (need to watch weight anyway).

    Drak

  • Betreft: Re: Betreft: Re: Betreft: Re: Moved: Offtopic Discussion w/Katja

No free parking around the cinema's around here. Besides, if they were
free, you'd not find any free spot to begin with because everyone would
    park their car there, then.

About the seats... Well, we do have plenty of space here too but if
there's some fat guy farting in front of you, that space just can't be
    big enough to begin with...

About eating while watching a movie. Microwave popcorn is low in fat
and tastes quite nice. It's better than that greased stuff you get at
the theatre, which they make extra salty so you also drink more.
Besides, since we girls just share the costs for the movie, the food
and drinks whenever we watch a movie, it's all pretty inexpensive. A
lot less than when we'd go to a theatre. Adding the costs for the TV on
top of this is unfair since we'd have that TV anyways, for watching
regular TV. The same about the DVD recorder we have. We'd used it to
record anything interesting on TV anyway, so it's no extra cost for us
    while watching a movie.

Finally, I never really had problems with my weight. I can eat and
drink as much as I like and my doctor will still say I'm a bit
    skinny... [:P]

  • Katja: I finally have a point of reference for your new avatar.

It's that woman from Terminator 3. You know, the terminator woman.

  • Katja,

I hereby offer to take you to a Belgian cinema to experience the joy for yourself.

  • Betreft: Re: Betreft: Re: Betreft: Re: Betreft: Re: Moved: Offtopic Discussion w/Katja

Thanks for the offer, Drak. But Belgium is still too far away for my
likings. Besides, my friends would love to come too and I think you
might feel pretty uncomfortable with 4 young, pretty women around
    you... [:P]

Naaah, it's a nice offer but I still prefer my home cinema environment. Much more comfortable... [H]

  • Hmm, 5 people would be a bit crowded in my car, I agree. Oh well, enjoy watching DVDs at home [:)]

    Drak

  • Betreft: Re: Betreft: Re: Betreft: Re: Betreft: Re: Betreft: Re: Moved: Offtopic Discussion w/Katja

Besides, we would expect you to drive all the way to Amsterdam to pick us up and then bring us back home again after the movie. And btw, our place is a girls-only house so you can't stay over for the night. [:P]

And did you notice? We're on page 3 now! I'm a page 3 girl now... [:D]

Let's see... It's about 220 KM to the Belgian border. Add another 30 KM from the border to the cinema, that would mean you'd have to drive 1000 KM to pick us up and take us to the cinema. With an average speed of 100 KM/H this means you'll be in your car for about 10 hours. Add 2 hours for the movie... Wow... Now you know why I don't go to Belgium to see a movie. [H]

  • Re: Moved: Offtopic Discussion w/Katja

Actually the cinema is about 5km from the border... and amsterdam is about 148,7 km from the border.

    Sooo, let's see.. 120km to A'dam + 154 to cinema + 154 to A'dam + 120 to home = 548 km

    That's about what 3 to 4 hours [:D] or 5 if  I drive nicely.

    Drak

  • Betreft: Re: Moved: Offtopic Discussion w/Katja

Hey, with 4 girls in the car I expect you to drive nicely! [:D]

Well, even 150 KM is a bit much in my opinion. Still 300 KM for me,
which means about 3 hours driving. And I'm the only one of us four
girls with a drivers license (and a car) so I'd be the one behind the
wheel while the others can have all the fun and watch the view.

Let's see... My car does 15 KM per liter, so this requires 20 liters of
gas. Current price is EUR 1.31 per liter so this trip would cost me EUR
26... Plus the price of four tickets, some soda and popcorn and maybe a
bit more. (And hopefully no speeding tickets...)

A movie on DVD costs between EUR 5 and EUR 30. Chips and cola is always
available here, bought at the supermarket in large quantities for a
price cheaper than the cinema's and the best part is that I can always
see the movie again if I want to. [:)]

So considering the costs, it's cheaper to stay at home than go to Belgium and watch a movie there...

Besides, doesn't Belgium have double subtitles with every movie? French and Dutch? That would really annoy me... [:P]

  • Belgium only has double subtitles on some movies, and you get used to it anyway...

MY can would do about 12km/liter if I drive nicely, but then petrol only goes at 1.26 euros near Belgium [:D]

    Drak

  • Betreft: Re: Betreft: Re: Moved: Offtopic Discussion w/Katja

Well, it used to be 1.28 per liter a few weeks ago. And it has been
even cheaper too. But these days the price of gas is pretty high. And
then to think of all those Americans who probably pay the same amount
for a gallon instead of a liter. That's unfair!!! [:(]

  • @Katja Bergman said:

In the good USA, we are now paying $2.15 per gallon in our area.  In Los Angeles I hear it is up to $2.40 per gallon.  YIKES!!  Thank goodness my car gets 30 miles to the gallon! [:D]

  • Betreft: Re: Betreft: Re: Betreft: Re: Moved: Offtopic Discussion w/Katja

Wow... Let me see. €1 is about $1.20 if I'm correct so $2.15 would be €1.80... Okay, still €0.50 more than a liter here but keep in mind... A gallon is between three and four liters. So it's still extremely cheap in my opinion...

And 30 miles to a gallon? That would be 50 KM for about 3.5 liters? Drive that car here in the Netherlands and you'll be dead-broke within weeks... [:P] I envy you for those low prices...

  • Betreft: Re: Betreft: Re: Betreft: Re: Betreft: Re: Moved: Offtopic Discussion w/Katja

Of course you're involved with girls, but I mean real girls, not pictures on your computer monitor... [:P]

And didn't the price of Diesel go up quite a bit, recently? At least
the gas price was EUR 1.33 per liter yesterday, here. I didn't choose a
diesel, though. It was way more expensive than the gas one and besides,
I don't drive very large distances anyway. One tank will last almost
three weeks for me, unless it's summer and we're visiting the beach on
a regular basis. And one tank is about 600 KM with my driving style...
    :-)

  • Bah, I don't get more than 450 km out of a tank of fuel.

Well a few years ago I was paying $0.89 per gallon so, I am already broke[:P].  It just hit 2.20 per gallon today.  [:(]

  • Betreft: Re: Betreft: Re: Betreft: Re: Betreft: Re: Betreft: Re: Moved: Offtopic Discussion w/Katja

Let's see. My tank can hold up to 55 liters. In general, I fill it up
after somewhere between 500 and 600 kilometers. And then it wants
between 35 and 40 liters of gas. So I think that I could average to 750
or more if I wanted to. It's just that I don't want to stand somewhere
with an empty tank so in general I just fill it up after 500 to 600
    kilometers.

And my driving style isn't grandpa-style either. (And I have the fines
to prove it, darned waste of money...) It's just that I keep my
distance to the cars in front of me and don't break at the last moment
in front of any red traffic-light. When I see the light is red, I just
stop pushing the gas pedal and often it turns green again even before
I've gotten to a full stop.

And I already have the real thing to talk to and tease. Why would I even need more? [:)]

  • My tank takes 40 litres. I usually fill up at 400 kms and en up putting about 32 litres of petrol into the car.

I must confess I am not a fan of people rolling to a stop at the traffic light, especially if I'm turning left, and my light is green when theirs is red. Oh well, people on the road irritate me in general. Always driving too slowly, never using their turning signals, squeezing into spaces where they just fit (if the guy in front has to brake there's an accident). I have to agree with Katja on leaving space to the car in front, but then some idiot is going to try to squeeze in there.

Also the guy on 'blik op de weg' (a show about bad driving) who decided about 500 metres before he got stuck behind a truck to go to the left lane without signalling and almost rammed the undercover police car. Come on, if you drive like that you shouldn't be off the road. Especially since he said he didn't notice, and was being really irritating about also filming the police because they were filming him. If he'd just said 'Sorry, I made a mistake' it would have been so much less aggravating.

    Drak

  • Hehe, my total in fines is 0 euros. They just never seem to catch me, or I only drive fast in places I know they won't be looking [;)]

I also like to brake on the engine, but a lot of people seem to drive 50kmh in 5th gear and then engine braking is not going to slow them down a lot.

I never have had a speeding ticket either, but a few friends of mine have had them in the $400-$500 range.  And then the insurance companies add 4 points to our insurance per ticket (which adds a substancial increase to our insurance for at least 5 years) They charge us a base $75 for the first 10 MPH over and $10 for each MPH beyond the first 10 mph.  Plus they add a $75 charge to the ticket for some handy cap program.  So, a speeding ticket costs a minimum of $150 here.  Oh, and if you are caught speeding in a work zone, they double the ticket, so it now is a $300 minimum. [:^)]

  • Betreft: Re: Offtopic Discussion w/Katja

My total of fines is EUR 54 so far. I've received 2 fines in total. One
because I went 3 KM/H over the limit and one because I went 7 KM/H over
the limit. And the dumbest thing was that I knew they were checking at
the places where I got fined... (I already had slowed down a bit...)

That just sucks, though. Only a little to hard and then still such a
big fine. Then again, I'd like that system in Finland (I think it's
Finland) where the height of any traffic fines is related to your
income. I don't have much income thus small amounts for me. But if
you'd make $500.000 per year, the fine would also be pretty high...

I think they've had several cases already where someone got fined for over $100.000 on a single speeding ticket... [:D]

  • Hey Katja,

We never got an explanation of your new avatar.

    1. Were you angry that day?
    2. Was the picture taken during a time in your life when you were more...rebellious?
    3. Does the picture have any sort of symbolic meaning? (i.e. you vs. society?)

It's a very interesting photo. It kinda reminds me of that lady in the Terminator 3 movie. You know, the Terminator.

  • Betreft: Re: Betreft: Re: Offtopic Discussion w/Katja

    Happy now?

  • Betreft: Re: Offtopic Discussion w/Katja

I'm often just in 4th gear when at 50 kmh. When I get near a traffic
light, I go to 3rd and just let the engine slow me down until I either
have to stop or until I can push the gas pedal again to speed up.

Never had any parking tickets. Just two stupid speeding tickets because
I was a little bit above the limit. I could have bought 4 good DVD's
    for that money...

A EUR 700 ticket and losing your drivers license for a month? Well, at
least you've calmed down a bit after that one. The others seem to be
    much lower.

Btw, did you go more than 50 kmh over the speed limit? Wow...Why? Were
you in a hurry or did you just like to sit at home for a month. [:D]
