Online email providers

  • I thought it was about time to rotate the passwords in a couple of junk email accounts I created years ago.

    <font size="3">Email provider #1</font>

A badly formulated error message. Pretty minor, I know. But I love how somehow I got a doubled navigation bar.

What I don't love are their password requirements:

So I absolutely must type both an upper- and lower-case character, a digit and one of those non-alphanumeric characters. But I can't have a password over 20 characters.

Also, not pictured: the type-your-own* security question has maxlength=30, which is rather short.

    <font size="3">Email provider #2</font>

It looked like I had forgotten the password, so I asked for a recovery link to be sent my other email account which fortunately was still available.

I follow the link, type my new password plus it's confirmation in the page that appears, and I get "Entered passwords do not match".

No, I did not mistype. What I then notice as I try again is that the second input field has maxlength=16; unlike the first.

So I merrily twicely typed away the password I wanted and pressed Enter without really looking at the input fields, so I didn't notice one the passwords was being truncated while the other wasn't.

For the record, the login box doesn't have a limit on the password length.

*Email provider #2 doesn't give you the option of typing your own security questions. You get to pick out of 9 questions. Including "what is your maternal grandmother's maiden name". I guess that's a safer questiona that asking for my mother's maiden name?

Oh well, I guess I get what I paid for.

  • Ah, passwords. You'd think that after over 50 years using them, people would have figured them out.

  • How are ordinary people going to understand "digits [0-9]". Besides that, when literally interpreted, it means having 10 digits in your password.

I've had a problem similar to the maxlength problem once, but it wasn't on a free site, but rather on the site of a major airline: they demanded that I change my name (which was a string, but apparently they didn't like two initials) but then had a restriction on the input field that made it illegal to edit. In HTML, of course.  Greasemonkey could disable it, if I remember properly. But well, it was the same airliner that had a maximum of 256 characters for "remarks" which were appended straight to a query...

Hey, that's a incrowd meme. You're not supposed to widespread it. That warms it up.

You know, this is an adult forum. You are allowed to swear. Putting stars in there makes you sound like a 14 year old who just discovered the word "damn" on his wrestling forum.

  • What, as opposed to offline email providers?

  • Holy crap there's still public email providers besides Gmail, Yahoo and MSN?

You're over (and incorrectly) thinking things here. Not like an ordinary person at all.

Alternate phrasing: ordinary people are significantly smarter than TGV.

My dad uses Juno... oddly enough, so does one of my brothers - and he's in COLLEGE!
