Eclipse Add-ons Dialog

  • I needed to add the EPIC editor to my brand-spanking-new Eclipse install, so I started up the process and everything looked fine for a while.

The installation was taking longer than I thought it should, so I clicked on the "Details" button to find out why.

Yes, thank you, Eclipse. That was very helpful.

  • Aww, you mean you can't get even MORE details and have an eclipse-ception?

  • PFFFFF specifying the modules of your software so that your standard installer can show detailed progress bars is akin to writing documentation.

  •  So which is it? Is it fetching or installing?

    Yes.

  • To be honest, you got to see  ...  uhm ...  less characters of the URL.

  • What kinds of details did you expect?  When installing a plugin all it does is fetch the plugin (determine the url where the plugin resids and download it), and install the plugin (possibly unpack it and move the contents to the appropriate plugin directories in your eclipse install/workspace).

I suppose the wtf could be that it told you it was fetching the plugin (or that it told you the (collapsed) url) in the condensed view, rather than reserving that information for the details view, but meh, whatever. Or I suppose the wtf could be that they don't report the progress in terms of MB downloaded, MB to go, current download rate, expected completion time; but nobody pays attention to those details anyway.

So why is there a button if there aren't any additional details available? Do you have some kind of disease that prevents you from seeing extremely obvious bugs?

Oh. So there are additional details, but the "Details" button just doesn't report them.

I don't understand why you typed a post that circles around and ends up right back where it started.

How DARE you bring facts and logic into this! Everyone KNOWS that its about programmer angst, anger, RAGE! RAWR!

  • I thought his post was hilarious. "You don't need details because there are no details to report. Well other than download rate, completion time, ... ok I guess you do need details".

Unintentionally hilarious I'm sure. But still hilarious.

  •  If you want details gone off the deep end, look at the Windows 8 file copy progress dialog.

That post is useless without a screenshot.

    You're right! I'm sorry. Here:

More information available on a technical operation--particularly when something goes wrong--is always better than less.  Personally, I don't really care what it looks like (within reason of course) if only it would finally learns to estimate properly.

Yes, more information is beter than less... But wait, where is the scale of tha graph the dialog shows? A line going up or down in a grid is not additional information.

and this surprises you? I could think of a dozen instances of Eclipse being very helpful

If that number encompasses all Eclipse users, it's about right.
