I don't really like subtitles, but they're a far better solution to a
language barrier than dubbing. I enjoy listening to foreign
languages in movies. "Hero" and "House of Flying Daggers" would
be ruined by an English overdub. I know they did one for
"Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon", but I've never listened to that
version. Mandarin is beautiful to listen to. French too,
especially when spoken by Ludivine Sagnier [:D]

Btw, the Chinese spoken in [b]Hero[/b] is surprisingly and unusually
terse and short. It was done deliberately to allow foreigners to catch
on easier, but sounds retarded to regular Chinese.

I noticed my daughter's Spanish/English dictionary says there's no need
form pronunciation guides for Spanish words. How nice!

I read that Chow Yun-Fat and Michelle Yeoh's accents in "Crouching
Tiger..." were terrible, as neither are native Mandarin speakers.

Chinese. At least Japanese have their Kana character sets to afford
some means to pronounciation. Until they start using Kanji (Chinese
characters).
Chow Yun Fatt being Hong Konger and Michelle Yeoh being Malaysian have
their native tongue in Cantonese, one of the major chinese dialects. So
it is always a battle not to bring over Cantonese pronounciations when
speaking in Mandarin.

Don't worry Katja, CPound (and pretty much every other guy here I'd
wager (and some girls, for that matter)) still think you're hot.
[;)] Comparisons to movie actresses don't count - they
exist more in the realm of fantasy, since it is much more unlikely
you'd ever actually get together with one of them.
Of course, given the global audience in this forum, it's equally
unlikely that most of us would be able to get together with you, except
perhaps those who live close to you and the incredibly motivated.

I have to disagree here. Although there's usually some hint of sexual stuff in Anime, there are quite a few good series. I myself enjoy 'Full Metal Panic' (which actually has quite a good dub version from ADV UK) which is about big fighting robots (yeah yeah, unoriginal) and 'Initial D' which is mostly about downhill car racing.
The thing I really like about FMP is the way the relationships are worked out. And something I like about a lot of the anime I've seen is the obviousness of the characters facial expressions (and the very often seen 'droplet'), and the extreme emotions they have. No guessing what the character is thinking, it's obvious. (Wish girls were that obvious IRL).
I like Initial D because I like cars, and quite a few are in the cartoon. It's always nice to try and guess the proper name/brand of the car from the racing speak they use [:P]
I still need to learn japanese though... And I think the few words of Cantonese I do speak probably sound all wrong to HKers [:$]

I too live in the Netherlands (the south, in the south east of a province named Noord Brabant (North Brabant, hehe)).
I am a programmer and my work day looks like this:
06:15 Wake up, shower, brush teeth
06:50 Get in (small, japanese) car
07:10 Arrive at work, look at DailyWTF
07:30 Start work
12:15 Break, take a second look at DailyWTF
12:45 Restart work
16:00 Get in car
16:25 Shop for food
16:40 Arrive back home, do stuff
22:30 SleepMost people don't start this early (and then don't stop so early), but this way I get to skip most of the traffic rush hour.
Oh, for americans who don't use the 24 hour clock: 16:00 = 4pm, 16:25 = 4.25pm, 16:40 = 4.40pm, 22:30 = 10:30pm

I myself brush teeth first - why prolong "morning breath"? Even if you live alone, it is a horrible thing....
This diversion reminds me of a George Carlin skit, in which he
discusses the minimum body maintenance needed for the average man.
"Asshole, armpits, hair and teeth. Get those covered and you're
set for the day. You can even save more time if you use the same
brush!"

I'm not that old. I'm only 28 you know...
Oh and about retiring early... I live in an appartment block, and my upstairs neighbour gets up at around 04:30. So my last 1.45 hours of sleep are more like lying in the dark staring at the ceiling instead of sleep.
About the brushing of teeth after showering... This is a habit left over from the days in a student house. To make sure you got the chance to shower before going anywhere, you'd have to be there before anyone else got the chance to get there first.[:P]

Usually its a 12 year old girl showing her panties.
And something I like about a lot of the anime I've seen is the obviousness of the characters facial expressions (and the very often seen 'droplet'), and the extreme emotions they have. No guessing what the character is thinking, it's obvious. (Wish girls were that obvious IRL).
Which further reinforces my honest belief that anime plots are worked out by and designed to appeal to teenage boys that still live with their mums. "Wow, you are 16 and you are the only one we will entrust this $180 billion military robot to. Quick please save the world. Also dont tell your classmates." This is why anime appeals to geeks with a stunted social life. "Oh our pilot of the $18000 billion robot is ignoring orders. Instead of shooting him we will let him continue flying. Cos like hes so awesome and irreplaceable and all..."
Additional facts:
* For some reason action in anime is 'turn based' which is fucking annoying to watch if you dont have a stunted imagination.

As with game developers who easily hop unto the bandwagon of FPS ans RTS and attempt to (poorly) milk every single drop of penny out. It is the copy cats who ruin the specific genres of any industry. Some however, perform a fine and drastic twist that deserve their place (e.g. Neon Genesis Evangelion)Additional facts:

Naruto is a shining example (in the negative way) of how excuse oneself of one's poor directorial skills by translating near 100% the exact manga format and snapping into TV. It has got to be one of the (if not the) most excrutiating and trying of patience titles I have come across.

You're going to the movies? Geez, you must be old! Today we have home cinema's... :-) All you need is a huge wide-screen TV, a good sound installation and a DVD player. (And a couch, some microwave popcorn, some Cola or other stuff to drink and a good movie on DVD...)
I really enjoy watching a good movie at home with my three housemates, comfortable on the couch, wearing whatever I like and not having to worry about sitting in the bubblegum of the previous visitor... And at home you can have all the comfort that you need. [:O]

Unlike in most Dutch cinemas the cinema in Lommel is usually quite tidy. Unless there was a large group of dutch kids in the 19:30 show, then there's often quite a lot of popcorn to be found on the floor.

Maybe. But once you got stuck to your chair in a cinema because you sat
in something someone else spit out, you just tend to enjoy the comfort
at home. I've been to several cinema's in my life and they have never
been real funny experiences. Especially when you have to sit next to
some sweaty fat guy. Or when you have to sit behind some tall person.
Or when some couple next to you just keeps talking or doing other stuff
during the movie.
I even had to punch a guy on the nose once because he kept touching me
during a movie. Sure, he was 9 and I was 8 but he really should have
behaved a lot better. [:P] We weren't on a date or whatever. It was
just a school trip... (Had some explaining to do afterwards to my
teacher.)
No, I prefer the comfort at home, wide-screen TV, DVD player, as much
cola, popcorn or whatever else I like to eat or drink and best of all,
I can pause the movie anytime I like when I have to go to the toilet or
whartever. Of course, it's also comfortable to watch a movie while
wearing nothing more than a bathrobe, just after you got out of a warm
shower. Shower, Dinner, Movie, bedtime... Perfect!

I've been going to that same cinema for almost 10 years. Almost every week. And i newver got stuck to chewing gum!
Maybe it's because you can choose your own seat. And that it's never actually very busy (only times there's been anyone in front of me has been with jurassic park 2 and lord of the rings (I do tend to sit in the fourth row from the front though, as it gives the best view-filling exeprience)).

Hmmm. Either watch a movie at home or travel from Amsterdam to Antwerp
or some other clean Belgian movie theatre... Well, that's what? 100
miles or so? Spending 90 minutes in my car to travel to Belgium, watch
a movie for 85 minutes, then travel 90 minutes to get back home again...
Naaaaaahhh... I prefer my widescreen TV with DVD recorder. Or just my
computer with build-in DVD burner. Watched "Alien versus Predator"
yesterday with my housemates. Great fun! :-) And of course the men all
die and the woman win the battle...

I prefer to stay home and watch a movie. There is never a better time to sit on a comfy couch and cuddle with your sweetheart. It’s kind of hard to cuddle in a movie theater and be comfortable at the same time.

Us, man-haters? [6] Actually not, but the no-man-in-the-house-rule just
means that we can walk inside our house wearing whatever we like. Also
means that we don't have to keep things as clean as guys expect women
are. [:P] It just doesn't work when you get up in the morning and walk
to the bathroom for a shower, only to discover some guy who had stayed
for a sleepover taking a shower... [:$]
And about that movie... It's just the truth. In Alien, the only
survivor was a woman. In Aliens two women survived. Oh, and some male
soldier survived too after being rescued by the women. In Aliens VI
again, a female survivor. And of course, a female robot, showing that
if there will ever be robots, people prefer them to be women.
We women are extremely strong persons. Want proof? Then you press
something the soze of a soccer-ball through a body opening the size of
a golfball, without complaining too much.[<:o)]

My other comment was not about the specific movie you watched, but the
fact that you all took pleasure in the fact that all or most of the men
died, and women generally triumphed. :)
Men are quite strong too. Want proof? We have the
capability of LIVING WITH females who have gone through the
soccer-ball/golf ball process (and think they don't complain much)!

Has a pretty wife who already pushed out two kids for him and what does
he do? When he just sees another pretty girl, he just goes after her,

And well, of course I liked that movie. In the older movies it would
always be the guys who had to rescue the damsel in distress but these
days the damsels can kick ass too, in the movies. Like "Kill Bill",
more and more movies about the stronger sex (we women) are appearing...

Presumably you refer to the large number of people with their heads up their ass? [:O]
Irregardless of what males do, they don't get pregnant, and if they
did, an anal delivery presents many more difficulties than just the

I suppose your point would be valid if all men were just like Mr.
Beckham. This, however is not the case. There are plenty
of women with loose morals (which seemed to be the point of your
reference) as well! I can name a few names and therefore "prove"
mens' superiority too.. :)
I agree that you (women in general) secretly control us, which I
suppose can equate to "strength". But it could also be described

again, it's just an experience the average woman has about two or three
times during her lifetime. And while we complain during this moment, we
are able to endure the pressure.
And movies? Well, it's just as much fun to stay at home, invite some friends and watch a movie on DVD on a big widescreen TV. :)
That saves a lot of money too that we'd otherwise have to spend to get
at the theatre, drinks and popcorn and the ticket itself. Besides, for
the price of a theatre ticket you can easily buy a movie on DVD too.
And in the latter case you can watch it whenever you like... And over
and over again...
