Southwest Airlines glitch

  • 🚽 Regular

Southwest Airlines customers billed many times for half-price tickets due to computer glitch

I'd hate to be the development team that was responsible for this... not only are you going to answer some tough questions come Monday, your weekend's probably totally lost.

  • I frequently get billed twice when I prepay a rental on Avis.com. For a while the prepay feature was removed so I was thinking they were fixing the problem, but now it's back and I also got double-billed since then. I think the problem is that some customers don't learn and keep using that prepay feature so Avis does not have an incentive to fix it. Damn those stupid customers.

Naah, won't have to wait 8-10 days. Just call the bank/credit card company and dispute the charges. They'll fix the problem overnight.

I know that can be done with Visa and some other credit cards in UK.. does the same apply in USA? Or is it (card) vendor-specific?

  • With Visa in belgium, you have two possibilities:

    1) declare card stolen. It gets blocked, you are not debited. But it's a fraudlent declaration, there will be a claim by visa for stealing and if you end up being still in possession of card, you will get billed in the end + fees.

    2) dispute the charges. They will be put on hold, but it takes between 10 and 60 days for visa to clear things with seller. During this time, your card limit get lowered to take into account for the charge. So if you dispute 1800€ and your limite is 2000€ you end up for two months having a visa card with a limit of 200€. Far from useable.

It works for any card. US customers have a lot more power than they realize with credit card transactions and the assumption is that the buyer is in the right. If we run into a dispute with a vendor, mentioning the word 'chargeback' generally ends the argument quickly.

I had an issue with overclockers where they dragged their feet RMAing a video card - after hearing nothing for a couple of weeks after the "we've received your card" email each successive enquiry had a different Customer Service Advisor promise to personally rectify the situation which simply triggered another "we've received your card" email and silence for a few more weeks.

After 2 months, I mentioned I was about to report the payment as theft/fraud to Visa and lo! They were pleased to give me a full refund!

Wankers. But yup, I see that involving the CC company usually has some customer clout.

Yeah. The only difference between American Express and Visa in this area is that AMEX actually advertises that they're ok with disputing charges. (Visa doesn't, because it would annoy their issuer banks.)

Oh and BTW, it also works on debit/check cards with a Visa logo. If the logo's on the card, it's a Visa and you can file a dispute, regardless of the type of card.

That'd be because the credit card processor generally charges the merchant $10-20 for every chargeback. I understand that too many chargebacks can get the vendor's account suspended.
