  • It seems the error is caused by you restarting. Or fixed by-- Try rebooting twice. That'll make it TWICE as rebooted. Or something.

No, that's not the case at all. What is happening that a lot of us posters here are taking it in turns to break into your electronic devices and FUBAR them. It's in the terms & conditions of this site that we do so. Didn't anyone tell you?

I knew somebody with the same issue, most of the time it got fixed by me entering the room as I have the opposite aura

I have similar problems with network configuration.

So now I just set everything up properly and then call someone to click the ok button, press enter, whatever. If I do it not only it won't work properly, I won't even be able to ping the router anymore.

No - it's just Sony have no idea how to work an online store. Really, half the time on PS3, the store just craps out for no reason. Also, on some screens half the items are missing.

PSN programmers = one million monkeys hitting random keys.

Never had anything like these issues with XBL. *hides after praising MS*

No it's a Vita. As to how I feel about it: I've owned it less than 24 hours, and I haven't used it for its primary purpose yet (playing video games during my long bus ride) so I'll know later today! I have Lumines and Rayman on it.

Please let us know how well the gaming works. I've been interested in this thing for a while but haven't found a brick&mortar store that has one in store to test/play with. I'm not so sure about the (sponsored) tech blog reviews

I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure dhromed was agreeing with blackeyrats implication that he no longer reads (he's been reading for 2 years, so he's sick of it), which explains why he bought the vita.

I think your comprehension skills need some polishing.

  • I finally found a portable gaming device that I like. It's the 4th generation black-and-white Kindle. Way more fun than the iPad and my Windows Phone combined. And the games remind me of an old GameBoy. And my eyes don't burn after a few minutes. And I can go longer than 45 minutes without needing to charge it.

It's a Japanese electronics device. To wit:

    1) The UX/UI design is 5+ years out-of-date, poorly thought-out, clunky and (as seen above) buggy. It's like they copied the iOS interface without bothering to find out why Apple made any of the decisions they made. The fact that, when the inevitable error does happen, they neglected to bother writing a friendly error message for it, or giving the user a way to resolve it, says a lot about Sony's skill at making UIs. It actually feels like they took a decades-old camcorder UI and just patched in enough stuff to make it kind of resemble a 2012 touchscreen UI, if you squint.

    2) The industrial design is also 5+ years out-of-date. It's 2012, this device was designed in 2012, why the hell are there visible screws? Why are the barcodes and FCC info plaque on the outside? Nobody wants to see the barcode! And yet despite that, it still has all the drawbacks of Apple-like industrial design, for example, no replaceable battery. (And let me tell you, my HTC phone which looks brilliant and has no visible screws still has a replaceable battery!)

    3) It's packed with an insane number of features, many of which are hard to use, many of which are pointless to use, and the majority of which nobody will ever use because they don't fit the typical usage of the device. For example, the "alternate reality" camera and games-- what good is a game where you need a flat, stable, well-lit surface on a portable gaming machine? Similarly, what's the point of the orientation sensor? I'm not going to be riding the bus and wanting to spaz this thing left and right like a steering wheel, looking like a moron. What's the point of the rear touchpad? So far only one (pack-in) game has used it for anything at all, and it was obvious they just contrived that use (it would have worked as well being the front touch-screen, or the L button for that matter.)

That all said, none of that matters when you're in a game and playing, so it's good at doing what it's designed to do.

  • Oh. Probably goes without saying, but since it is a Sony device it uses proprietary memory card formats and a proprietary USB cable plug. The former I'll be generous and assume they have performance-related reasons for it... the latter? In-fucking-excusable! Especially since the STANDARD USB plug for this type of device is FAR SMALLER than the one Sony designed.

The van stops, worn pads squealing pitifully against rusty drums. The driver puts on the parking brake. It doesn't work. The cable has long since snapped. But it's a custom. It's rote.

But you also like questioning everyone else about their level of autism based on their level of fun, so I think asking about your lack of maturity with respect to what you find to be fun is a reasonable thing to do. I get the exact same error in the exact same situation whenever I visit the PSN store on my PS3 over a WiFi connection. Using a wired LAN connection; no problem. If I were a betting man, I'd bet that Sony is sharing the WiFi stack between Vita and PS3 and it contains some horrible, horrible memory leak related to dropped/resent packets.

The non-standard form factor for the memory cards is actually just to prevent piracy. The official line, according to one of Sony's reps, is that the non-standard form factor means the cards can only be used together with a PS Vita, which in turn can only connect to and transfer files with a PC through a dedicated program written by Sony. (This being Sony, said program will probably be dripping with DRM and possibly other rootkit-like invasive anti-piracy measures as well. Also, they conveniently pass over the point that the Chinese will probably reverse engineer a USB-based card reader for the things anyway at which point everything comes down to the encryption of the data on the card, something a standard form factor card could cope with as well.)

I'd speculate that piracy is just an argument to placate the common consumer and that something else drove the decision. Realize that a memory card is pretty much a mandatory component to get any real use out of the handheld: games can't save to the built-in memory, only to a card. Moreover, games which rely on the creation of save data at startup (e.g. a 'systemdata save') sometimes outright refuse to boot without a memory card. If I remember correctly, this category of games included one or more of the high profile lauch titles as well.

Knowing this, look at the Vita's deceptively smart launch price, which is trying to edge as close to the 3DS's price point as possible. Then look at the price tag on those mandatory memory cards. Get it now?

Probably the Vita will offer games of types and in genres that appeal more to blakey. Games, after all, are its primary purpose. The service and hardware quality can be as good as you want them, if the games suck (to you) then a portable gaming device is worthless.

Also note that shoddy security works both ways: it could also make it much easier to jailbreak the device and install customized firmware and homebrew, i.e. you can expect it to have a jailbreak and mods available sooner. If homebrew is your fancy, then Vita is probably the better choice (and will also have more horse power available than 3DS).

I also think it's Sony's Wi-Fi code - my PSP has always had issues with forming reliable connections, though less so with the later firmwares.
