Not So Friendly Greeting on Wikipedia

  • A user named "Earth Exploding Live" has apparently hijacked several Wikipedia articles. I wanted to look up http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Morrissey (don't ask), but instead all I got was a message stating

"Earth Exploding Live sends friendly greetings to readers of this article. This message will be taken down within 24 hours if the link specified gets at least 2000 hits. Thank you."

Apparently this user has done this to several other articles.  I wonder if this exploit is related to the mechanism of the SOPA blackout.

  • It's weird, because the old version renders OK now. Maybe the script was disabled, or the link was visited 2000 times?

  • I can't find any pages on Wikipedia that currently have the text "earth exploding live" anywhere on them, nor can I find any pages anywhere talking about it apart from this one post.

I'm going to just assume it was a technical hiccup that happened when someone left the server closet open and a very intelligent squirrel modified Google's search results.

    No, that's 모 = ㅁ + ㅗ = m + o, 리 = ㄹ + ㅣ = r + i, 세 = ㅅ + ㅔ = s + e and 이 = ㅇ + ㅣ = ng + i — which, read together, makes mo-ri-se-ngi.

Actually you can't just separate the characters like that - each block is treated as a syllable and the position of the character can affect the sound the character makes.

Normally ㅇ is 'ng' when at the end of a syllable. When ㅇ is at the beginning of a syllable it's basically a null placeholder (i.e. no sound). Historically the two characters were slightly different, but eventually both the null and ng ended up simply as ㅇ

The rule for composition is that a consonant needs to be the first character in a syllable. So when the syllable starts with a vowel, the placeholder needs to go in.

    So in this case:  모 = mo, 리 = ri, 세 = se, 이 = i => mo-ri-se-i

How do I know this? My wife is Korean.

  • You can't separate them, you say, but when you don't you end up with exactly the same transliteration I had, except for me missing that the ㅇ is voiceless/a placeholder ;)

My country was pretty late to the whole craze of a certain brand of Japanese monsters that allegedly fit in your pocket. Even though we were too old for that stuff at the time most of my generation knows at least the basics.

They also love naming the monsters with intentional misspellings of existing objects and words. Since I started using Onyx as my online name at roughly the same time everyone connected it with a huge rock snake thing... Which is not even black!

In my case the first result for Onyx is for a Pharmaceutical, so Onyx must be named after the drug store and thus must be a drug dealer.  And the image search returns pictures of a 4 man hardcore hip hop group from South Jamaica, so that only more confirms you are a drug dealer.

It is truely sad that kids these days have neglected their roots to the point where google no longer returns the most accurate results for the search onyx.

Yeah, which is apparently spelled differently (according to Wikipedia, at least). I guess we shouldn't be surprised at the missed references. I imagine there's a significant negative correlation between Pokemon familiarity and spelling.

Google images return mostly a rap group at this point for me.

At least it's not black cats anymore, I used to get them all the time while trying to link people to images of the mineral to prove to them it really exists.

When I spell it appropriately, the images are dominated by Pokemon stuff.
