The greatest XCode feature yet!

  • XCode randomly crashes whenever you set breakpoints or use the debugger. Find doesn't really work, refactoring doesn't really work, and it has funky code-auto-completion that tries to autocomplete any "else" block's braces but not on any "if" or "else if" blocks that's really annoying. But it does have this gem that totally redeems it! It's so useful I don't know how I ever lived without it! I can never touch Visual Studio again. I wonder if vim or SSDS can do this?

  • So will it do it for larger selections?  You could get the whole program as a track and play it for all the devs (depending on the size of the program, maybe on repeat) as background noise.

  • You can actually do it on any text in the entire OS.

  • Oh man! And set it to bongos! The Vogon's ain't got SHIT on this! Drop that bass, bro!

I recall an old sidebar where someone's manager asked that they write out what all their code does, line by line, in a natural language (English). At last, we have the "translate it for the managers" feature.

Not just from the GUI, either.

  •  So will it then translate to classical music? :D

Cool. My Amiga did that, 25 years ago, and it wasn't very useful back then either. Although admittedly, there wasn't any iTunes or ATunes or whatever at the time, so here's one of the few examples of Apple offering something genuinely new.

  • The main use for the voiceover — sorry, VoiceOver, is for sight-impaired users, I think. Having a command-line utility to use it too just makes it easier on developers. Though I have used it at one point to turn a text file into an audio "book", which was obviously read by a computer but not annoyingly so — but I never actually listened to the whole thing because it turned out to be far too long for my liking :)
