•  We have found Blakey's next RobotsInTheNews game.

  • I don't understand why people do shit like that. I hope Hasbro shuts them the fuck down for missing the fucking point of the series. (And massive copyright infringement.)

    Look, I get you like the work. Express your admiration by RESPECTING IT.

    Edit: Wait I'm going to rant a little bit more, because this shit pisses me off more than those morons who use Minecraft to build scientific calculators. These guys obviously have game development skills, they could be making an ACTUAL game that would be their OWN original work and instead they're wasting their lives making this shit-fest which they don't own, they can't release, which doesn't respect the spirit of the original, and which will be inevitably shut down. As it should be, ASAP.

    MAKE A NEW GAME. Make your own characters. Make your own settings. Make your own voices and sound effects. We love new things. Love them! And if it's good, you can sell it and make some cash.

    There's nothing I hate more than people who have talent and shit it down the toilet.

  • I say that it respects the spirit of the show quite well.

    And all the assets are made by the dev team, not a single sound clip has been taken from the show.

     On one hand, I agree. Make something new, orginal, etc.

    On the other hand, there is a significant advantage to making something out of an existing franchise: exposure. In almost all sane cases of "fan art" on this level, someone's doing it to hone their skills and build up their portfolio. If you wanted to draw in a number of like-minded developers to form a game team, think about what will work better. Starting an empty project on sourceforge and hoping people find you, or putting out a video of "omg ponies!!! Wanna help?".

    Then there's the exposure to the public. This game isn't just going to be stuffed into a portfolio and trotted out (ha ha) during interviews. It's out there. People are looking at it. It's a foot in the door for everyone who works on the project. People do this all the time in the film industry. See Batman: Dead End.

    It also proves that the dev team have the ability to work within a licensed franchise.

    Should they make the game? Absolutely. It doesn't need to be perfect, but it should be a showcase for their development skills. At the end of the project, they've honed their skills and formed a proven, working development team. The first piece of code you ever write is shit, so now that's out of the way.  And they all have something recognizable in thier portfolio.

    Should they release the game? Probably not. Hasbro has lawyers and likes to use them. They're infringing on a company's intellectual property, and Hasbro can make the very valid claim that either a) they were going to release their own MLP fighter or b) this is damaging their brand.  I'm sure there's plenty of fair use and parody excemptions, but that's a whole other barrel of monkeys. (Get it? Lawyers are monkies! Hey hey!)

     With that, I'll leave with Arm Joe, a fighting game based on Les Miserables (plus Robo Valjean)

  • @Lorne Kates said:

    See, now that's exactly the kind of things these guys should be doing if they want to build a fighting game. Unique concept, unique characters, you can release it when you're done without getting sued.

    Oh yeah I remember that episode where all the best friends wailed on each other for literally no reason and learned nothing from it.

    Serious question: do you honestly perceive that as "the spirit of the show"? Do you think Lauren Faust would agree?

  • They have a good explanation, they just haven't released it yet.

    Besides, it's not like they are doing a mortal combat clone.

    You have my motivations all wrong. And if they loved MLP, they wouldn't make a fighting game.

    What I hate to see is wasted talent.

  • Well, around 3000 people disagree with you on that. They showed up during the preview video streams and wanted the project to succeed.

  • @blakeyrat said:

    That's still based on your preferences (and the implicit assumption that they're superior), which amounts to hating someone because they listen to the "wrong" bands.

    You think you have the moral high ground, but alas, it's just a form of arrogance.

    @blakeyrat said:

    I don't think your metaphor applies at all.

    @dhromed said:

    I believe a creator of a work should control the distribution of that work. That belief happens to correspond with law in most of the world.

    @dhromed said:

    Maybe you should just imagine all of my posts end with, "that's my opinion at least", since people seem to be under the impression I'm telling them how to think.

    Look, you're welcome to have whatever opinion you want. Go for it. You don't need to write posts like "says you" because we all know it was just me saying it. I'm not trying to shut down their website, I'm not trying to piss in their cornflakes, I'm just saying I think they're wasting a lot of talent and disrespecting the creators of the show they are supposedly fans of. I think. Not "you should" think. Not "I'm going to pass a law to force you to" think.

    Get it? Got it? Good.

  • @blakeyrat said:

    I believe a creator of a work should control the distribution of that work. That belief happens to correspond with law in most of the world.

    I believe the same thing too, but both our beliefs conflict with the reality of work ownership being transferred financially as "rights".

    For anecdotal evidence, I refer to stories about the creator of PacMan, many 2000AD stories and assorted comic authors. Many of those are pretty tragic when you hear how the original creators were treated, and in some cases law actually used as a crowbar to separate creator from ownership.

    Anyways.. I thought you were a self-confessed MLP fanboi. How come a MLP-skinned Street Fighter game doesn't get your juices flowing?

  • @blakeyrat said:

    They're on quicksand if they're going to publish this game without formal endorsement of MLP's creators, and I agree with that because I don't like it when NEFARIOUS MISDOERS profit from riding the coattails of another hardworking person.

    Nonetheless, they seem to know this prefectly well (reading teh FAQ), and since they don't ask any money, I don't know in which grey zone of the law they fall.

    So that one's for the lawyers to figure out.

    @blakeyrat said:

    Well, I'm going to repeat myself since you probably understand what I meant with the previous instances of:

    Who gives a shit?

    Stop giving a shit and focus on your own work.

  • @Cassidy said:

    I believe the same thing too, but both our beliefs conflict with the reality of work ownership being transferred financially as "rights".

    What's wrong with that? I believe the creator of a work should be able to control its distribution. As part of that control, they should be able to allow someone else to act as a proxy. Publishing companies have been doing this for centuries.

    @Cassidy said:

    Except in 99% of those cases, the problem was that the creator singed a contract he didn't understand.

    The real problem is that an artist can lose simply by the scope of the infringement-- Bill Watterson gave up trying to shut down the thousands of fly-by-night companies making knock-off Calvin and Hobbes stickers, for example, just because every time they knocked one company down another would come and take its place. That's tragic.

    But 99% of the time, the artist just signed a bad contract.

    @Cassidy said:

    Because the show isn't about best friends wailing on each other for no reason. I thought I made that clear.

    And you're also saying that if they used a different resource set, it suddenly wouldn't have been wasted? Due to copyright concerns? Copyright law determines if talent is or isn't wasted..?

    It's fun asking you these questions.

  • @blakeyrat said:

    It's an exploration of simulating the effects of LSD on a viewer in a work populated by psychiatrically unstable individuals.

    It's version 2 of the experiment that started with the Teletubbies.

  • @Xyro said:

    And you're also saying that if they used a different resource set, it suddenly wouldn't have been wasted?

    No it's just because it's a dumb fighting game.

    And that's true.

    But let them.

    No no, Spongebob is the attempt at subverting the experiment by an underground resistance group, after its discovery.

  • @blakeyrat said:

    That was my point - many creators of work no longer have control over it. I'm citing the recording industry (amongst others) where the original creators see their work being replicated on compilation albums or being covered in TV commercials without the creator being consulted (or even informed/involved).

    @blakeyrat said:

    Except in 99% of those cases, the problem was that the creator singed a contract he didn't understand.

    That. Fundamentally the creator agreed and signed away the rights, but in many cases their naivety was exploited to obtain the signature and seize the works, then law used to add more clout behind the new owners. I find it despicable that highly-paid experienced lawyers dangle a carrot in front of an inexperienced and gullible artiste then use that signature to demonstrate that it's perfectly legal and correct to use that work in ways against the wishes of the author.

    I'll get off my hippy soapbox now.

    @blakeyrat said:

    Because the show isn't about best friends wailing on each other for no reason. I thought I made that clear.

    Okay, so fanboism has its limits. What if it was possible for player 1 to pick a pony and player 2 to pick a ..erm.. ${pony_antagonist}?

    What ARE the antagonists in MLP? Gummy bears?

  • @Cassidy said:

    What ARE the antagonists in MLP?

    There aren't any really. I guess most of the dragons we see are, if not evil, uncaring about the ponies. And I guess griffons or at least the few we see in the series are kind of jerks. As are the diamond dogs, but they knuckled under at the slightest opposition, so.

    Part of the brilliance of the show is that whenever they set up an antagonist, they always subvert it somehow.

    Edit: and if there were antagonists, they wouldn't just WAIL on them. Ok maybe Rainbow Dash. And possibly Applejack in a pinch.

  • There are very few antagonists in the show, the conflict comes from within the core characters.

    But there are three main antagonists that has appeared, the evil princess of the night (they blasted away her badness using the power of friendship and she returned to being the sister of the good princess), chaos incarnated (voiced by the same guy as Q from startrek, got hit by the friendship beam too) and an evil changeling queen (defeated by the power of love).

    Um … no. "In The Night Garden" is version 2 of the Teletubbies experiment. Unless you're younger than 10 years of age, it's a seriously disturbing show to watch: either because it will remind you of some bad experience you had on drugs, or because it's just so … so … SERIOUSLY WEIRD. And yes, it was conceived and made by the same folks who devised Teletubbies. In other news, I'm possibly one of the few people who made a fully licensed filk CD with all music copyrights paid for, ditto the rights to print lyrics in the booklets paid for. We sold out our run of 500 professionally pressed, shrink-wrapped CDs (with tear strip, of course!) and even turned a very small profit. And both the creator of Babylon 5, and Chris Franke who worte the music for the show (yes the some one that was in Tangerine Dream), enjoyed the results. So it IS possible to 'do it right,' to have fun with someone else's creation, and have the said creator be quite happy with the results of your labours. I believe we are the only people to have ever written altenate lyrics to Mel Brooks' "Springtime for Hitler" and the UK 1970s novelty no. 1 hit "Grandad."

    Interviewer:  I have a question, and it's kind of an evil question, and some of the people I've interviewed have answered it, others have just restated that it was an evil question.  "If you could ask something from the fandom.  If you could ask them anything, what would it be?"

    Jayson Thiessen:  Well I've actually been asked this before, and you know that game, fighting is magic?  I keep seeing that game every few months.  Finish that game already so I can play it.  If they can finish that game and provide a copy online?  It looks cool, I've seen all the demos, and I'm just like "Wow, that's really well done"

    There are others who've worked on their show who voiced their support for it.  I know Tara Strong did, but I don't have a clip for it ATM.

    Jeez Mildred.  Loosen your girdle a little.  It's called comedy.  It's called being silly and ridiculous and absurd.  My Little Pony beating the crap out of each other.  That's funny. @blakeyrat said:
    Serious question: do you honestly perceive that as "the spirit of the show"?
    No.  It's the exact opposite of the "spirit of the show".  That's the whole point.  That's the basis of almost all comedy.  That's what makes it funny.    Grow a sense of humour already.

  • There are many things that could be done to make it lose the spirit of the show. Something that would actually get rated so that the target audience of 5 year old girls would be allowed to play it isn't going to be even close to violating the spirit of the show.

    It's nothing more than cartoon violence. There is no blood, no death, nothing that would put the rating past 3+/E, they aren't even shown to lose consciousness.

    The actual show has been just as violent, with ponies getting into serious fights, getting severely injured for humor and having high speed cart chases.

    It is not a that big stretch to imagine that a plot could be made to explain why they are fighting.

  •  I kind of liked the idea when I first heard about it. Arguably Season 2 is hardly completely faithful to the original concept and design of the show as Season 1 was. I like the ironic twist of putting characters, settings, and so forth from a IP based around "friendship is Magic" in a fighting game. It puts a slight adult twist on the existing concept, and from what I've seen it's not quite the equivalent of "slap some IP sprites and sounds on Street fighter" but actually is well thought out.

     I don't consider it a waste, since it is very possible that a lot of their passion for the project comes from their passion for the show they are basing the game on.
