Ah, Wordpress, thanks for reminding you how much I hate you.

  • Trying to leave a comment on a blog...

"You are being asked to login because smeargle235@gmail.com is used by an account you are not logged into now."

I don't have a Wordpress password saved, but fortunately there's a recovery function.

"ERROR: There is no user registered with that email address. (smeargle235@gmail.com)"

    D'oh!

(Btw, I noticed that little text about Gravatar, but logging in with my Gravatar account didn't help either.)

  • I'm not sure I understand.

wordpress.com doesn't have a record of your email address for an account registered on hackaday.com...?

  • My theory is that there is a new AI plugin in WordPress and it prevented you on purpose from posting your comment because it was not interesting.

^- this. Why would you expect to recover your password for "hackaday.com" from "wordpress.com"? Those are two completely different websites with completely different databases. (Although they happen to share the same CMS.)

Also why is your browser window pink? My Little Firefox?

Also stop using AdBlock you freeloading asshole. Maybe they kicked you off the site for taking all their content and not even giving CPMs in exchange.

    Also I am drunk.

You might have noticed this if you weren't drunk, but If hackaday.com weren't sharing a DB with wordpress.com, it probably wouldn't say wordpress.com at the top left of the screen where it's prompting about the comment.

Wordpress's creators did a really stupid confusing thing where you can either download their software from wordpress.org and install it yourself on your own domain, or you can create an account on wordpress.com and have them host it for you.  If you do the latter, you can also upgrade your account and attach your own domain to it.  Then you have a site branded under your own domain but which shares a database and an account system with every single other fucking site on wordpress.com, and anyone who wants an account on your website (such as if you require login to post) actually needs to register with wordpress.com.

So yeah, wordpress.com should have his password for the account registered with hackaday.com.

Also why is your browser window pink? My Little Firefox?

    Yeah, this.

It used to say "wordpress.com" at the top-left of one of my wordpress sites because that was their default icon until you changed it (now they use rotating picturesque banners for their default "twentytwelve" theme).

Shared logos doesn't necessarily mean a shared database, IYKWIM.

I can see the benefits of a centralised user DB across several sites... but you're right that an account on one site confusingly requires registration on wordpress.com. It makes sense now you've explained it.

  • WordPress.com doesn't store usernames as username@gmail.com. The only way that could be your login is if you signed up with that email address.

It is very possible that your username was taken by someone else, or even more likely: you registered using a throwaway suffix.

The fields in both screens request a username or email address as means of identification.

The latter has a much lower probability of collisions than the former, so many sites use those as logins.

  • I figured that the “Lost your password?” link on hackaday.com is the one that he followed … Either wordpress.com is broken, or the CMS itself is too stupid to display working links when installed on a different domain. It’s not user error.

What’s more sad is that the site still has magic quotes enabled, as evidenced by the backslashes in his comment. Seriously?

Also, why does the Chrome window have an extra title bar button only when it’s not focused?

Looks like a DisplayFusion button to me.

    Note: I use DisplayFusion.

    Why the hell not?

It said I had to log in because my email was on file though.

No, the Windows snipping tool is just fickle about whether or not it wants to capture it.
