Going to this url: http://www.google.com/custom?q=spelunx&hl=en&safe=off&domains=http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/&sitesearch=http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/&prmd=ivns&ei=w7XmT_nEEejcmAWE05CNCw&start=10&sa=N invariably results in this error:
Tried from multiple browsers from multiple computers (however, not multiple networks alas.) Note that my searches are not nominally being throttled: after getting that screen I performed a bunch of random searches in a row to test it out. It's literally just that one URL giving the error.
I was just trying to figure out who Spelunx only shows a black screen when I start it.

Well, be glad you're not the only one.
That honestly does make me feel better. I have no clue what's going on there, how can a screwy URL trigger the flood error? How was that screwy URL actually generated by Google and displayed on one of its pages? My mind boggles.
-
I get the same error... mabye it's some kind of honeypot for search/query-spammers, that got into the wild ?
-
Huh...
-
Seems that both spelunx and forums.steampowered.com are triggering it. Maybe some google-based DDOS on steam?
Try it through Google.ca. Seems to work:
Also, thorstanner, it's going to page to because it has &start=10 attached to it. (removed on the canadian link)
Update, nevermind, the .ca link is fuucked, too. (that's fucked with an unnecessary u). But going to google.ca and tryping spelunx site:forums.steampowered.com seems to work.

I have seen this quite a few times when I have used some "complicated" search filter (like combination of inurl, site and actual search term), especially after page 1. I think it's an automated system to prevent trying to use Google to find vulnerable versions of software. As usual, it's not perfect and this might be triggering false positive.
-
You're not the only one. I tried it from rural Thailand and got that error. So it's definitely the URL, not the LAN.

On an HR portal I built with my former employer, you couldn't run 1 certain report for 1 given date, because the encrypted URL would be falsely identified by IIS as some sort of hack-attack. Weirdest error ever... Seems similar to this.

what if the encrypted URL actual was an exploit

Well, Google might have weird errors, but at least it knows who Michael Dorn is!
Wow. I never realized how much makeup they used to make the aliens in TNG. I always though they just grabbed some spare forehead ridges out of their prop room, slapped them on, and called 'em a new species.
Whelp. You learn something new every day.

... oh.
What are you complaining about? That picture is clearly the deceased Michael Dorn, an actor from the German soap "Gute Zeiten, schlechte Zeiten".

Doesn't the site you're trying to search have its own search functionality?

No; it offloads that duty to Google. Which fails at it.

Is this ASP.Net? Once in a while I've seen situations where
Page.ValidateRequest=false
had to be set to prevent a request mistakenly identified as unsafe to be rejected. It's one of those things where the solution is worse than the problem. Like back in the days when Microsoft released an "IIS lockdown" utility that basically disabled asp.
