Bow to the superiority of iOS!

    Nough said.

If you look carefully at the video, what actually happened is that the guy went to the table, recharged the tablet, ran Windows update, and downloaded+installed Netflix. It was done very quickly because on Windows 8 they gave up with .Net, they used C++ (WinRT), which is very fast.

  • Oh hey look a new novelty account. I am sure there will be hours of hilarity resulting from this.

  • Thank you for the warm welcome.

    Watch out for the necros.

Oh wait! There's one already! Yay PHP vs RoR!

  • Yeah this is something I would normally apologize for.

I think I was looking at a dead old tab on my phone when I wrote that post..

  •  Wow I just got linked to this same video, hosted on collegehumor.com - so I thought it was a spoof. I was waiting for the replacement tablet to screw up too! "And here's an app made just for Surface... (BSOD)"

  • Well while we are at it...

    Windows Plug'n'Play capabilities (youtube)

  • I wonder whether Microsoft did not in fact do it intentionally. If the demo went well, nobody except the handful of magazines that had their reporters there would ever mention it. But since it didn't, everybody passes around a "funny" video of yet-another-Microsoft-presentation-gone-bad. And everybody knows Microsoft is planning to release a tablet, which what Microsoft wanted. People are not going to not buy a device because it failed at a demo a year ago, but obviously will not buy a device they never heard of.

  • I'm having a hard time having a problem with the freeze.

It's prototype hardware running unreleased software. As someone who has had to give demos like that, to the fraking Military, this is exactly the kind of situation where it works great until everyone is looking at it. Then every bug that you fixed three months ago suddenly comes back.

And I mean, come on, iOS crashes too. My old iPhone used to freeze all the time. Now, am I saying Surface is going to be OMG WTF AWESOME!?, no, but I think it'll have it's niche. Heck, I'd be more willing to buy a Surface tablet than an iPad simply because I think the ability to run the same applications on my computer as my tablet is pretty darned useful.

Probably just buy a kick ass laptop instead, though.

  • Holy shit, a prototype malfunctioned. Somebody call the FTC!

    Ok!

... what do I tell them?

I've been (in person) to two Microsoft demos in the last 10 years. Both times something went wrong - freeze, crash, unexpected reboot. I don't think this is specifically because the products are inferior. I think it's because they don't take the demos seriously; they don't script or rehearse enough. Based on what I've read in Bill Gates books, it's a culture thing - they expect their people to do demos and meeting without spending time to prepare them because "they should know what to do". Meanwhile, the competition is making huge efforts to have flawless demos and presentations, so their stuff look more reliable.

Tell them "Holy shit, a prototype malfunctioned."
