So you can run Office 95 on Windows 7, but you can no longer run Live Messenger 2009?

  • Fuck you Microsoft.

Does anybody like Live Messenger 2011? Did you receive a single iota of positive feedback for it? Ever? No? But we're still required to use it, because fuck your users! Right?

  • Everyone hates the 2011 version. And the new version in metro is even more limited. Luckely you can still get it to work by changing the version number (14 into 15) of the executable with reshacker.

But still.. Windows live is dying. All users move to facebook, skype and google talk.Which have ofcourse their own WTFs...

FTFY. Also I am surprised that people still talk about Messenger; if someone is looking for an obsolete IM technology, why not go for ICQ or AIM? Real vintage is chic.

Here is my ICQ #323829838289 which I haven't used in 10 years... aw! good times! ICQ, the perfect example of a security hole.

  • TRWTF is Mac O... oh wait a minute...

  •  I haven't used Live messenger for years, I preferred to use the messenger programs that connect to a bunch of accounts at once. Using Pidgin at the moment, works pretty well for what I need, but then I never did use any of the "fancy" features of MSN/Live Messenger.

  • Not surprised, right now they are more focused on Office Communicator, which actually fills a need.

  • @ASheridan said:

I don't consider "being able to send photos/files to people" a "fancy" feature. I consider a basic goddamned feature that was in fucking AIM 2.0 and almost every single third-party IM client gets fucking wrong.

BUT HEY! Now the goddamned fucking official clients also get it fucking wrong, so fuck everything I hate it all die in a fire everybody everywhere!

Well, that would make a messenger client redundant and fix your immediate issue. Good thinking.

Well, why not ICQ or AIM? I read somewhere that real vintage is chic.

  • I assume I'm using the most recent version of Messenger. What's the big deal?

No big deal. I also use the most recent version of many applications, like WordPerfect, Easy CD Creator or Winzip.

  • Maybe, just maybe, all the server backend stuff for Messenger doesn't support ancient versions anymore because the protocols have changed and Microsoft doesn't want to run old versions of the Messenger server backend to support the four people in the world who refuse to upgrade.

Really? Still using Live Messenger, and even prepared to defend it? There have been suggestions, like Skype, Google chat and Facebook. As far as I know, you can perfectly well send files with Skype, as well as using Pidgin with Messenger. I stopped using Messenger 4 years ago and never once looked back. It's crap. Get over it. At least now you have a good reason to leave it behind.

  • @mott555 said:

Have you actually used it? You can no longer have a IM alias separate from your email name. You can't turn off the bullshit "link safety scanner" which only exists so that Microsoft can add your Live behavioral data to their tracking cookie.

... to be honest those are my two major complaints. I was bitching about the inability to simply send a file to someone, but Live Messenger 2009 has issues with that too.

  • @pbean said:

EXCEPT THE PEOPLE I NEED TO TALK TO ARE ON WINDOWS LIVE you dumb shit. Christ.

Stupid me, but when I ask for a replacement for Live Messenger, I'm asking for something that *gasp* actually replaces Live Messenger! Not pointers to 46,023 other social networking bullshit IM programs the people I need to talk to don't use.

That's bullshit and you know it. All of the third-party clients, even ones much older than 2009, still work fine.

  • @blakeyrat said:

Then it's time to sit down with Aunt Estelle and tell her that the Secret Santa this year should be organized using a non-obsolete IM platform.

  • Trillian I find doesn't work too badly for file transfers. It's multi-platform, multi-service and works reasonably well. It's a tad ugly in Windows, but you can atleast install a theme to get rid of the ugly.

  • Well we only use Messenger for internal office communications, so none of that really affects me. Want to send a file? We use email or a file share on one of the servers. Now that you mention it the link scanner thing is annoying, but I'm so used to it I don't think I even consciously notice it anymore, I just click "Continue Anyway" before I know what I'm looking at.

Messenger really just replaces our intra-office phone system for most tasks.

  • I still like Miranda. It configures like an audio engineer's studio, but other than that it really gets out of your way.

IM, like email, is one of those things that apparently defies the pseudo-natural progression of technology.

Yeah that's what I'm trying here at work. So far it's... meh. I do kind of like that it pops up toaster notifications for Twitter, though.

It's not that its annoying (although it is), it's that it's sleazy. Microsoft claims the point of is it to "protect you from malware links", but in reality the point is to create a contiguous cookie history from your IM account to their live.com (and possible Atlas, if they have it set up) cookie, so they can sell the targeting info.

I work in web analytics, and I think that's sleazy as hell.

Steam, on the other hand, pops up a similar notification but since it's in a Steam dialog and not your web browser, you know they're not using it to suck data from you. They're doing it (comparitively) right. It's still annoying.

Of course the best thing to do is NOTHING, let the browser take care of it, since all browsers already have malware-site scanning features.

    you dumb shit.

Sorry, I forgot you were entirely unsuited for civilised discussion.

In any case, if you're still using Live Messenger, you have to be prepared to deal with its WTFs. This isn't the first time they've done this (I remember version 7 was a mandatory upgrade from 6, while 6 was basically perfect and all ironed out, and 7 was some sort of pre-alpha new version), and it certainly won't be the last.

I do feel sorry for you that you always have to feel so annoyed and pissed off by everything. Must be a tough life.

  • @mott555 said:

OCS was okayish, but the new product, Lync, is painful.

  •  Has everyone seriously just accepted the fate of having to use the new messenger? Hasn't anyone tried using something, like Win2000 compability mode, perhaps? It works! I didn't have to upgrade the messenger :P

  • Just be thankful you aren't forced to use SameTime (the IM app associated with Lotus Notes). It's so unreliable, we usually call it "Sometimes".

  • Hey the Lotus Instant message chat is not so bad..

  • @KimJongIl said:

Hey the Lotus Instant message chat is not so bad..

Indeed, it has this cool notification system for alerting me of new incoming messages. Either the chat window pops up, interrupting me in my normal work (cue rant about the window manager in Windows) or Notes itself simply crashes. Much better than say a little notification in the general vicinity of the system tray.

I've sent and received files with Pidgin on a regular basis, and yes I would class that as a basic feature. When I said fancy ones I was referring to the useless Flash/Shockwave emotes that MSN/Live Messenger had.

I've heard somewhere that the old messenger works if you tell it to run in Vista without service packs compatibility mode.

I think it might be something along the lines of "We know/there is very high chance that this has a security hole, but we don't want to support it anymore. Go upgrade."

And personally I use BitlBee. IRC is my main form of communication anyway.

  • I installed a program called Trillian but I don't know if I'll stick with it. It has some very, very, very fucking stupid code in it. (For example, if you have an IM window open and you receive a new IM, the toast notification OBSCURES YOUR IM WINDOW-- EVEN WHEN ITS THE EXACT IM WINDOW THAT JUST DISPLAYED THE IM THE TOAST WINDOW IS NOTIFYING YOU OF!!!!!) Jesus that's some stupid application right there.

Also if I decide to use it, I have to just cope with ads because I refuse to use Paypal to pay for it, and I'm sure as fuck not sending in a money order in 2012.

Wait, doesn't your adblocker remove those ads?

  • Obvious troll is obvious.

  •  I worked as a tester on Microsoft Messenger 1.0; it was a thing of beauty, simple, elegant, with all the essential features, and nothing in excess. The download to install it was 100 kilobytes.

The current Messenger team can [REDACTED] for all I care.

Everything went to shit when they rebranded as "Windows Live" and then tried to integrate all of their tools into a Facebook-esque social network NOBODY WANTS. 2009 was still acceptable because the social network wasn't finished yet and thus it has very little integration with anything else.

He has it disabled. He wouldn't see his own fine contributions to the internet, or those quoting them, if it was enabled.

  • Luckily I could avoid this forced upgrade by using ResHacker to "upgrade" msnmsgr.exe to version 15.crap.shit. While the code - of course - is still 14.something.whatever.

    Works like a charm.

Or do what I just did and put it in XP Compatibility mode. I just logged in for the first time in months and am talking to someone who I haven't talked to for the same period of time.

Edit: That said, it puts its icon back in the system tray if you do put it in XP mode.

It isn't. I mean, 2011 is fine (you can make it behave like 2009), but the fact that your "real name" appears and you can't block people (instead the option is to just show up as Offline to people instead) are two of the stupidest things they did in it.

  • @Douglasac said:

This is the problem with all of the so-called "social media".   You can "friend" "or "like"  someone, but you can't "stay the fuck away from me" someone.

You have a good idea for a startup right there. It doesn't even have to work or be profitable, as long as you can convince VC people you're set for life!
