New computer. Install JRE. Get this. Sigh.

  • I presume you don't have any quotas enforced anywhere, right?

  • BINNED

Maybe Java does some stupid 32 bit cut off there? (Just guessing)

You could try using up another 25MB to slip into the next remainder of 865 GB mod 4 GB.

.... until you read what he said about you.

  •  Visual Studio 6 had the same problem, likely a wraparound. Adding 25KB of data into your disk might do the trick; if not, adding 2GB should.

The solution ended up being "Click Retry".

I guess I can see how difficult of a bug this must have been for Sun to QA. After all, Java is a very new product with only a small development team working on it, and it's not like lots of people actually have  access to large hard drives these days. Totally understandable and reasonable.

The installer isn't actually written in Java, is it? The last people I want creating installers are developers. OK, being a developer, maybe I just don't want to have to deal with that headache. I think I'd almost rather write documentation. Can I go look for micro-optimizations yet?

Seriously, though, does anyone know if they use an in-house installer or some off the shelf thing? Given their update junk, I'd imagine it's in house, but I don't know (and only care a very little bit).

Doesn't matter. It's broken, it's code they ship, it's their responsibility to make it work right. If that means fixing it, then they are responsible for fixing it. If that means choosing another installer vendor, then they are responsible for that.

I'm amused that you post useless/obvious comments like this, and then rant when other people do.

Well it wasn't obvious to you, apparently, so I wouldn't call that useless. I'm teaching you about the wonders of software development in a magical mystical land full of gnomes and fairies.

Why do you think it wasn't obvious to me? Do you think that anything you said contradicted anything that I said? In fact, not being interested in the origin of the installer could lead others to not avoid it like they should. So your attitude of not caring about it is really just trying to propagate WTFs, which I guess is OK for this site, but still a WTF.

Gnomes are on back-order, sorry. Take some gremlins instead.
