Short and Sweet: This is a Tool Icon

  • That icon is a tool, all right!

  •  A Phillips screwdriver, I think.  [-] would be a slotted driver, and [٭] would be Torx.

Yeah, but what's the difference between this Phillips screwdriver [+] and that [X]. Three beers?

    Forty-five degrees.

Yeah, but what's the difference between this Phillips screwdriver [+] and that [X]. Three beers?

    [X] is a Phillips.

    [+] is a PosiDrive.

Now write it out 100 times so you don't get the two confused.

  • So what do they call those screwdrivers with a big cross and a smaller cross at a 45 degree rotational offset?

  •  Broken.

Unless you mean one of these:

In which case, it's a PoziDriv.

    More details here.

A PoziDrive doesn't fit a Phillips head properly - the Phillips lacks flutes. A Phillips can fit a PosiDrive, but the Phillips is a sharper point than the Posi so doesn't sit fully into the grooves, meaning you'll strip your tool or the head, given enough torque.

  • What about screw-fit lightbulbs

  •  They require a spanner, and a left-handed one at that.

Best to find one with an adjustable torque setting else the lamp will be overbright.

  • @Cassidy said:

How many left-handed screwdrivers does it take to change a light bulb?

The guy should use spell-check when he writes it out 100 times, because it's Pozidriv, not PosiDrive.

Don't make me compound your face in.

  • Found the perfect pozidriv symbol, bloody thing won't render though

  •  Here.

  • @dhromed said:

     Here.

Doesn't look as pozidrivy in that font as it does

    here

but it's a lot better than [+] which is obviously phillips, or [X] which should be reserved for some future proprietary-ass hardware that will no doubt be invented, resulting in technicians having to buy their screwdrivers by the dozen because THEY MAKE THOSE THINGS RIGHT ANGLED FOR A REASON

He's just griping that it's drawing attention away from his vastly superior WTF thread-- oh wait he hasn't posted one.

  • @Cassidy said:

    They require a spanner

Any idea why they call it a spanner in Britain and not a wrench? I mean, it doesn't actually span anything, and you don't hear about a "spanning motion" but you certainly hear about a "wrenching motion" which is eerily similar to the motion used to torque a wrench.

Derived from the German spannen meaning 'to clasp, fasten, stretch, span.' Wrench, also, derived from the German renken "to twist, wrench."

Or the country that make Panama hats. Or the animal we get cat-gut from or... ahh - sod it - here's a list of 7 others.

  •  That list, reproduced here to save link-clicking:

    1. How long did the Hundred Years’ War last?

    2. Which country makes Panama hats?

    3. From which animal do we get cat gut?

    4. In which month do Russians celebrate the October Revolution?

    5. What is a camel’s hair brush made of?

    6. The Canary Islands in the Pacific are named after what animal?

    7. What was King George VI’s first name?

    8. What color is a purple finch?

    9. Where are Chinese gooseberries from?

    10. What is the color of the black box in a commercial airplane?

And a few film-related ones from my own collection:

    11.  In Abbott and Costello Go To Mars, to what planet do Abbott and Costello go?

    12.  How many actors in the movie Surf II play the same characters that they played in the original film?

    13.  In Abbott and Costello Meet the Killer, Boris Karloff, who plays the killer?

    14.  What is Michael J Fox's middle name?  (A: John, B: Jeremy, C: Joshua, D: Andrew)

Not /quite/ sure how that helps, since you didn't include the answers and I'd assume most on here don't know/aren't sure to the answers of all of them, so they'd have to click the link anyway....

Al Gore invented the Internet. Tim Berners Lee (an Englishman) invented the World Wide Web. Gore backed Gopher.

Just to argue (and also to argue), sometimes there's a benefit. If the target page is slow, buggy, full of other content, spread across multiple pages, or might not be around in its existing form (or at all) in the near future, reproducing the content along with the hyperlink is a good idea.

You wouldn't link to Time Cube just to show off a single paragraph. (Okay, you would because you're a muffin-punching meany, but aside from that...)

That being said, the target page is fairly short, sweet, and contains extra vital information not reproduced in the summary (ie: the answers).

So to summarize: bran muffins are tastier if you add an overripe banana from the freezer, and max sure not to overmix the batter.

  • @Lorne Kates said:
