Gmail loves spam

I was a little surprised to see that when I was looking through my "Spam" folder, I was getting ads for "Spam Fajitas", and "Delicious Spam Crescents"...
Not a huge WTF, but Christ, one would think that Gmail would be smart enough to not target ads based on which folder you're looking at...

I understand targeting ads based on your search/email content, but that's one of their built-in folders. Just seems that it would be more effective if they maybe targeted based on the last email you wrote/read/what have you...

It intentionally gives Spam recipes as a joke because they don't want to serve ads in the spam folder. (Which makes sense. Who is going to pay for ad space in someone's junk mail?)

I don't get where you guys are seeing this. My Gmail interface doesn't have any ads when I view the list of spam. If I open one of the spam emails, I get the normal ads on the right-hand side. (A DropBox ad, in this case.)

Hmm.. that's what I get, too. I never pay attention to the ads, so I just assumed I got what the OP got.

They're never ads; they're Web Clips and I know at least in Google Apps, you can turn them off. Might be able to with a personal Google account too; I can't be bothered to find out.

Do you have "Web Clips" disabled by chance? That is the feature that enables those ads to be displayed.

I have no idea what he fuck "web clips" are. So I also don't know if they are enabled or not. I also don't really give a shit.
I just thought it was weird, since it seemed like everybody in this thread was seeing it, and I've never seen ads (or "web clips", or whatever the fuck those links are) there before.

Like blakey, I hadn't heard of Web Clips before reading this thread. So I had a look - in Settings there's a tab for Web Clips. Apparently, I don't have them enabled. That's fine by me.

I'm not sure it matters. Mine is apparently turned on, but then says:

Then it has a bunch of random RSS feeds. I normally see ads, but no Web Clips. Before writing this post, I was seeing normal ads when I was in my spam folder. I just went back in, and I'm seeing French Fry Spam Caserole.
This seems typical of Google stuff. Sometimes it works, and sometimes it doesn't. I tend to use iGoogle as my home page, and have tons of RSS feeds spread out among multiple pages in little portlets. Sometimes, I can click on the title to go the the feeds main page (like the main Side Bar page). But often, that link just doesn't work as a link. When the cursor goes over the link, I get the cross cursor that lets me move the portlet around on the page. But I get what I pay for, and it mostly works, so, meh.
