Pf, you can extend that argument indefinitely and end up with a nihilistic conception of an "essential" RPG where you have a set of numbers slowly growing larger. That is to say, that link has ground it almost to nothing.

I dunno - it still seems as if you actually have to do something in that one. Have you come across Progress Quest? Edit: Bugger - seems Lorne beat me to it.

Well, we have Victory Day (celebrating the victory over both the Turks in 1565 and the fascists in WW2), Sette Giugno (7th June, commemorating four people that got killed by the British during riots in 1919), Independence Day (when the country became independent, with the British monarch as the head of state), Republic Day (when Lizzy was sent packing) and Freedom Day (when the last British troops left).

But then there's New Year's Day, Saint Paul's Shipwreck, Saint Joseph, Good Friday, Worker's Day (1st May), Saint Peter & Saint Paul, Assumption of Our Lady, Immaculate Conception, and last but not least, Christmas Day.

I have learned never to get hyped up over a game just because its prequals were good.  Just because a game follows in the series of good games does not increase its chances of being a good game, only its chances of being a more expensive game.  There is also something about the third game in the series, if the first and second games both rock in your opinion, the third one will likely suck to you (and the bigger the gap between 2 & 3 the greater the potential suckness).

I wouldn't say that. Might & Magic's best release was 7; and they ruined it all when they switched to a non-sprite engine in 9 :-/

    By law?

Sort of. There are 10 Federal Holidays. When one of them falls on the weekend, then the work holiday will usually be defined as the following Monday (though sometimes the preceding Friday is given). Most firms follow this schedule. Of course, it's not mandatory, and stuff like retail is often open.

Part time workers generally don't get paid holidays (though it's not terribly uncommon for them to get overtime rates or better for holiday work). Full time workers at businesses who need people working each day (e.g., retail, restaurants, etc) typically allow workers to shift the holidays they work to other days off.

But fortunately, we haven't gone full on nanny state, so this isn't mandated by law. At least, not federally, and not in any state that I'm familiar with.

About a quarter of my group went farther than sick days - they scheduled vacations for the remainder of this week.

For Diablo 3? Seriously? Diablo games are boring as shit.

Please tell me they secretly planned a camping trip or something.

    Nope. Diablo 3.

We had a big network outage awhile back and some serious attempts to play Diablo 2 were made.

I don't get it, either. Terrible taste in games. I've gotta hand it to Blizzard, though - they've got their minions so well trained that they can just say "This is the most anticipated game ever" and some people will make like they've been anticipating it the whole time.

They also named a car company, "Lemon," so I guess it's a real crap shoot.

In case you don't know about Diablo 3, its prequels basically invented the action-RPG genre.

Hahaha, under which stone have you been living? Sorry to burst your bubble, but hundreds of action-RPG games were released before Diablo (released in 1996). Just some examples: Crystalis (1990), Legend of Zelda (1987), Ys (1988), and friggin Atari 2600's Adventure (1979).

Besides, Diablo is actually what we call a Rogue-like, which is a genre that spanned from the concept of a 80's computer game called Rogue.

I asked some players what was special about Diablo III, and the reply was that  yes, it has everything you've seen before, but it does it all better.

    That's a valid argument.

  • Blizzard really is TRWTF here.

Blizzard have never, and I mean never, had a successful launch of a multiplayer game. Despite the billions that WoW makes, every new expansion is plagued with issues like this, and all their other releases in the last 10 years or so have been the same.

The problem is this - the amount of hardware you need to sustain the game servers under 'normal' load is much less than what you need on launch day. D3 had 2 million pre-orders alone, the actual number of day 1 sales are expected to be about 5 million. A month from now, a quarter of those will still be playing, 2 months, a tenth of them.

And that hardware is EXPENSIVE, the folks running the servers are faced with the problem that if they put in the hardware to cope with launch, 2 months later most of it is going to be gathering dust.

Most companies work something out, they either rent the servers, or they 'borrow' from other games they run where they can trim some hardware off temporarily, or they buy hardware that they can redeploy to other uses when the launch spike is over.

But Blizzard, they seem to just go 'Well, this is what we think is needed to run it once the spike is over, so we'll put it in at that level and have a shitty launch. By the point they discover they can't log in and play we already have their cash so what does it matter?'

  • @Zadkiel said:

Hmm. Well this is totally anecdotal, but all the gamers I know think that Blizzard walks on water. EA, on the other hand, seems to be universally despised.

EA is the worst. Blizzard's parent company Activision is the second-worst. Blizzard is the most over-rated company I know. Diablo games are boring. Warcraft III stunk, and the only thing that kept anybody playing was a non-Blizzard mod. Diablo III, a brand new game, looks like shit. Development of their games takes like 3 years longer than it should, so they always release with ancient out-of-date engines.

In addition to having over-rated games, Blizzard pulls shit like... oh gee, what's happening now: requiring online presence for playing a single-player game of Diablo III. Or requiring that you associate your real name with your WOW account. And God knows they wouldn't put a game on Steam, Steam is actually convenient.

You can play solo if you want to, but you still have to connect to their servers to do so. So the servers are overloaded with login requests and almost no one can get in. Nice work, Blizzard.

I will never, EVER buy a game that does this. Know why? A few months ago, I was reading a story on Freelancer, one of my favorite old games. Reading the article about how Freelancer 2 died in dev, and the subsequent reminiscing about coming home from school when I was a kid and hitting the multiplayer with friends got me nostalgic. So, I went down to the basement, dug up my boxes and found my copy. Popped it in, installed a patch someone made to make it play nice with Windows 7, and boom. Nostalgic gameplay from the 90's.

Think 5 years down the road. Will Blizzard have maintained those servers? Probably. Another 5 years. Doubtful. Another 5 years: I'd be amazed if they were still running. And say you get nostalgic for Diablo III, boot it up, and woops! We can't verify your copy.

Not saying they're angels, but most of the "scandals" from EA are nothing more than entitled nerds whining about X, Y, or Z. Take the Day One DLC fiasco with Mass Effect 3 where zomg, you had to pay more for content already on the disc!
    • Initially, the From Ashes DLC was ONLY for people who pre-ordered Collectors or Limited editions. It was later added in the shop as a buyable DLC for $5 (cheaper than Limited).
    • Yes it was on the disc, because people who aren't retarded wouldn't print different versions of the game disc for the different releases.

The reason I (somewhat) boycott EA is due to their signing an exclusive license with the NFL, back when Sega was starting to kick their ass at football games, because paying the NFL to shut-out Sega was cheaper than actually *gasp* improving Madden to not suck. (That said, Madden has improved a lot now, but it was still a dick move at the time.)

I have to admit, I still buy DICE games (Battlefield series), but I at least feel guilty about it.

That list reminds me of how awesome the Half-Life demo was. It was its own self-contained little story line and was beautifully executed, with attention to detail that would be impressive in a retail game, let alone a demo. I played it all the way through several times as I was saving up the cash to buy the real game.

Interesting. When I was fourteen, I was saving up for a motocross, not for a 50$ video game. Of course at that age I was working part time (I had two newspaper runs and I was spending my summers doing yard work); in your case maybe it took a long time to get 50$ because you had to save the 5$ weekly stipend your parents were giving you for cleaning your room and taking out the garbage on Wednesdays.

If you were 14 when Half-Life came out (98?) it means you are now around 28. This surprises me because most people figure out in the early 20s at the latest that a foul language is not the proper way to communicate. Maybe this is something you could discuss with your mom when you go drop your dirty laundry (or should I say: when you come up from the basement to give her your dirty laundry - unless she picks it directly from your room?).

See, this is how you tell someone how childish they are. No need for dirty words.

I can't stand immature people. They remind me of the young king in Game of Thrones; entitled, nasty, pissy, insecure, with no valid claim to greatness. The exact same people that, when you talk with them, you know they don't listen, they think about what they will reply. It makes me even less patient when it is obvious that they have average skills and they make fun of people with less than average skills, like wannabe bullies.

Indeedy doo. Considering they're Canadians, I expect better than what they made... the seats feel like upholstered wood, they're uglier than the French things and they're louder than the French trams. They're also supplying the new trains, so it will be interesting to see what they're like.

Contributing to purchase statistics does impact (albeit very little) what publishers will sign onto in the future. Boycotts, however, are by their nature extremely hard to measure, if the target company even attempts to do so, or take it seriously at all. Basically, as a paying customer, you carry more weight in their decisions than if you're not. At least, that's how I look at it.

They are also completely weak willed.

Back when Modern Warfare 2 was anounced in 2009 with the news that they would not be running any dedicated servers or allow players to run their own, gamers got their nerd-rage on. They made a Steam group called 'Boycott Modern Warfare 2'  and hundres of thousands of Steam users joined it.

MW2 came out... with no dedicated servers.

a few days later, someone wrote a script to poll the Steam API and get a list of steam IDs of the group members and then check each of those IDs to see if they owned MW2.

I believe the ownership figure was somewhere around 60%

Having played the game I feel that way too, but I think it's a matter of how each class plays rather than a balancing issue. The Demon Hunter has traps for when enemies approach and can quickly dodge away to his preferred fighting range. The Monk and Barbarian don't care about close combat, have ways of healing themselves, and actually have more spirit/rage to spend as the fight goes on. The Witch Doctor's resource is limited, but you can just summon tons of stuff and let them do the killing for you. Which leaves the Wizard (or mage, as you call it) who becomes less capable of doing damage the more damage he does (due to his limited resource), but unlike the Witch Doctor has little to no indirect damage early on. So you're left doing a lot of kiting and careful management of defensive abilities while you wait for your arcane power to regenerate.

It is possible that someone gets all the money they want from Mommy or Daddy until past college, and that they never venture in the real world because they are afraid of getting dirty or hurt. As a society we need those people too because someone has to design new fonts and make strongly worded blog posts about gay marriage. It's all part of the beautiful human mosaic.

This is nothing but Nethack with graphics.

Pf, you can extend that argument indefinitely and end up with a nihilistic conception of an "essential" RPG where you have a set of numbers slowly growing larger. That is to say, that link has ground it almost to nothing.

    Progress Quest

    Edit: shit ...

I dunno - it still seems as if you actually have to do something in that one.
That's why I said "almost". I'm currently... running... Progress Quest.

Nothing to see here ... move along ... (jeez, this thread is moving fast!)

WellPict strawberries are better than Driscol Farms strawberries.
Fuck those WellPict strawberries. They remind me of that new Strawberry Shortcake cartoon.
