College Guy Looking To Bypass The System

Anyone want to take up the challenge of doing the homework as a variant of the C obfuscated code contest?

  • To ask what I admit may be a very stupid question, why are you looking for IT jobs on Craigslist?

  •  I respect his honesty.

CL actually has a large number of respectable jobs on it. You'll find that all sorts of recruiters post there leading to all sorts of opportunities. But yes, there are many ads that are total crap.

But CL is just one of my strategies, along with the major job boards, local recruiters that I know and networking at various professional events (including such as .net, sql and agile user groups) . And to aid in the CL aspect of the search a long time ago I wrote a scraping app that trolls through all of the job sections I am interested in, from all of the areas that I would consider and presents it as a nice list of links to the final pages.

So when I see things like this "job" I just have to and look and see if someone really posted an ad like that.

From memory this is the second week that he has posted this ad. It must be crunch time at his college.

I agree with OzPeter, craigslist is a great place for IT job listings. Really, most of the other job boards (Monster, Dice) suck..

... I have a network. Why do you need any job board at all?

That aside, I get tons of leads from LinkedIn.

    My rates are:

$50 to do the homework in a way that you will probably get caught

$500 to do the homework in a way that you won't get caught

$5000 to do the homework in  a way that you won't get caught, and for me not to "accidentally" email your professor & dean

(Note: the third rate is, obvisouly, a hidden feature.. until after the project is turned in...)

  • @blakeyrat said:

More options? I can read through dozens of listings in an hour. Recruiters/networks are fine, but the quantity of jobs they offer up is fewer. I've found several very good jobs through craigslist.

Isn't LinkedIn just one huge job board? With a bit of ego-stroking/DSW on the side, à la "I've got 10,000 friends on FaceBook/Twitter"?

I wouldn't call it one, no. It can be used as one, just as Facebook can be used to simulate a farm.

    Yeah: Stalking.

  • Meh, I've seen a better versionthan simply blackmailing the student in such cases. There have been cases where the person teaching the course has answered such adverts for a little extra money, given the student the model answers to hand in, and then caught them because they did the work in the first place and pocketing the money…

Yes, it provides me with a daily source of entertainment.

I use indeed. It aggregates results from all of those sources plus company websites.

I like how LinkedIn feels they have a service worth paying for.

Personally, even though I'm not looking for a job, I find the job listings on Craigslist to be quite entertaining, in a  WTF sort of way, much like this place.

  • Man, I wish I had a LinkedIn account, that way all the people I barely know... job recruiters that talked to me once... people I work with that have no clue what they're doing... can be associated with me!

You could just remove them from your network.

Look, the point I was making is that the best and the only truly reliable way of getting a job in this industry is to have a large network, and call on it when you need work.

This. Every job I've ever had has been because of the network I have. I no longer waste my time with Monster, Dice, etc.  The only thing they've ever yielded is mass emailings for roles I'm not remotely qualified for or live within a 5 hour flight.  I have ~90 recruiters on my list, of which I only have to email the top 10 or 15 before I get something.

  • I found my current job on CL. I've found DICE to be almost worthless and most recruiters are morons (and/or liars).

  • Anyone want another fun programming job?

I'll be seeing you people .. I'm off to make my billions!!

So, since whatever idea they think they have has probably been done a few thousand times already-- download the first open source version you find, shave off the logos, ask for a week of overtime to "finish making it super awesome", and collect an easy two grand?

What are they going to do? Sue you? Two months down the road, the company folds and they won't be able to afford a lawyer to sue you with.

(Or, they make it big. Approach a less than reputable lawyer, and sell him your share in this slamdunk case of copyright infringement-- you'll take 2k, and he can reap the millions from suing this huge comapny)

Man, it's a good thing I'm too busy cooking things to follow through on any of these plans.

Does this actually mean they intend to charge $10 to $30 per app download? Because even if they managed to get something good, I don't think even Facebook could charge $30 per download and survive.

It works the other way too. 90% of the good hires I've made came from networking. I've regretted almost every hire I've ever made from a job posting.

There you have it, job postings are a complete waste of time.  Unless you're one of the middle-men who makes money from advertising on Monster et al, of course.

But without job posting people would not get employed in total wft workplaces and that means less great content for this page.  I'm sure snoofle's workplace job posting would be worth reading.

I have found that it's WAY easier to get pay rises out of staffing firms than it is actual bosses. Every once in awhile (thrice on my current gig, and I'm 6 months in), I'll get frustrated with a bug or project, pick up the phone in my cube, dial my recruiter and say "You don't pay me enough for this shit."

Suddenly, I get a couple bucks closer to the $120/hr they're charging for my services.

Hell, I actually suspect I could ask for the full $120/hr right now and actually get it. All my fellow consultants were recently kicked off assignment for gross incompetance, and as a result the account manager at the staffing firm got let go for gross incompetance - they're DESPERATE to keep the two of us that survived onboard to keep the contract. The group I'm working for is MASSIVELY shorthanded after the cullings, and if I were to leave the assignment, they'd be positively fucked and EXTREMELY pissed at the staffing firm.

I'm having lunch with my recruiter next week. I should ask, if only to see what it feels like to ask for enough money to pay down my mortgage in six months.
