The Word For Today Is . . .

  •  . . . "transvaginal".

This is the word that has caused The Oregonian to decide that it is inappropriate to run the latest Doonesbury strips.  Garry Trudeau decided to run a series having to do with the new Texas law that requires an ultrasound before getting an abortion.  The Oregonian decided the language was too saucy for its paper, so they're running substitute strips.  They're one of . . . three? . . . in the entire country that have decided their readers are too sensitive and too immature to read these strips.  (Never mind that they've told us where to go on the Web to read them.)  Personally, I think the line about trying to protect children is a bunch of crap.

I was more concerned about my daughter seeing the big "US FORCES KILL OSAMA BIN LADEN" headline last May than I am about her asking about abortion.  (Now she's heard of 9/11 and I would feel comfortable talking to her about that headline too.)

A couple of threads of readers responding here and here.

The irony is that there are some people quoting an editor who died in his car over the weekend, quoting some of his journalistic ideals.  Of course, the story has now come out that, well, he didn't die in his car . . . turns out he died after having fun with a young lady.

  •  Why has everybody gone insane.

  • Who reads newspapers these days?

They're so dirty. Also, they're against freedom.

  • Wait, you actually read a newspaper?

  • What's wrong with a newspaper?  I mean, it's not my only source of news for sure, but it's one.

It's nice to get home from my cube/tanning booth and read something without having it be text on a screen.

I actually enjoy printed paper, it is easier on my eyes, now get out of my lawn!

  • Discourse touched me in a no-no place

Yes. Believe it or not, some of us can actually read news on paper that's been printed on. That was printed for the purpose of distributing news.

As opposed to the neanderthals who only buy the redtops to look at the borderline porn. I'm assuming you're in the latter camp and only buy them to oogle the blokes on page 7.

That is exactly the problem. There's no news in newspapers, it's full of stuff you could have read for free online yesterday.

What the fuck are you talking about? The redtops? Oogle the blokes? Isn't that the bad guy from that claymation movie?

    Ooo, you're British!

That's ridiculous; you can get borderline male porn for free online yesterday. Or something. But I know Blakey is tech-savvy enough to get his male porn for free.

  •  I like newspapers to read about everything that's not a soup du jour.

Soooo ... that's not blocked by my corporate proxy.

    Interesting.

Doing the crossword is more satisfying with a pen on paper. Saying that, I haven't bought a newspaper in years (but we do get two dailies delivered to my workplace).

I bought a paper the other day because it came with a free hot-wheels toy car (for my son, I promise!). But usually the only dead-tree news I read is mX - a free rag for commuters. And then only generally when my netbook is out of batteries or the cell network is playing up.

Real WTF is not reading a newspaper

I read HInDUSTAN TIMES and TIMES OF INDIA

Being the only sane person in a world full of crazy people is enough to drive you insane, that is why the world is full of crazy people.

Buy books from Navneet. They make paper from bagasse and not wood. bagasse is one material you get from sugar-cane pulp.
Do you grow sugarcanes in your country?

Why in the world would somebody care?  Do you eat the paper after you're done reading it?

    Gentler on the rear end.

I don't personally but there is plenty of sugarcane around, north of here. In fact the most popular spirit in my country is Bundaberg Rum which is made from all that locally grown sugarcane(s).

Still, sugar cane pulp paper still falls in my definition of "dead tree".
