Workers at Sipsmith distillery were trying to make mustard flavoured gin
Presumably with mustard. Mustard gas doesn't have mustard in, it got the name from the colour and apparent odour of it.
Having advertised this company in the first couple of paragraphs, the bulk of the article is a segue on what mustard gas is.

Mustard gas, also known as sulfur mustard, causes itching of the skin which leads to scratching and the victim being covered in large puss filled blisters.

To be fair to the article, it never said they accidentally made mustard gas using mustard. They may have been trying to synthesize the flavor/smell and accidentally arrived there.
Of course, if I were trying to make mustard flavored gin, I'd crack some mustard seeds and put them in gin.

Sam Galsworthy, the co-founder of Sipsmith distillery, has refuted "ridiculous" claims that his team accidentally created lethal mustard gas during an experiment.
“Four and half years ago in our Hammersmith site we added high street mustard powder to the distillation”, said Galsworthy.
The story, while being released over the weekend was about an incident years ago....

¹ I don't read that paper, but every time I heard of it it was because they ran a story that was not almost but entirely unlike reality.

It's pretty hard to accidentally create mustard gas, considering the chemicals you need. I'm also pretty sure that sulfurdichloride (SCl2) is on the list of watched substances due to its status as a precursor to mustard gas.
Not exactly something you'll easily get.
Also, it's actually not a gas - the boiling point is at 216 °C.
