SAP vs Oracle

The Guy That Created SAP's Hottest Product Ever Thinks It Will Clobber Oracle

It's like the Iran-Iraq War. Can't both sides lose?

  •  Looks like Mr. Bean got a tan and put on some weight.

  • Well, a 100,000 x improvement in performance is pretty impressive. Did they swap out the old 486 running Oracle in a broom closet for a real server while they implemented HANA?

That sort of number makes me really suspicious. In addition to hardware upgrades, what about the other bits of software? Did they simply point the same application at a new DB? That would be really impressive. Or did they also realize that they were doing some really dumb things and fix those, too? That's pretty common, IME. Did they have braindead DBAs who had no clue about how to keep the DB in tune?

  • Quickly looking around shows that HANA is all in-memory. So some hardware-upgrades were definitely applied. Also, since SAP ERP can't run on it yet, this probably means an application has to be adapted to use it (or at least to gain performance) as well.

The number itself is pretty void of meaning, considering the 'testing consitions'...

I can only imagine their Oracle connection really, really sucked, and that the Oracle instances were very poorly managed. I mean, Oracle is not a great db, but 100000 times? Say looking up a particular employee's record took 1 second, 'cause everything was a bit slow, and now takes 10 microseconds? I call BS.

Ah. Yeah, that changes quite a bit. Looking into this, it appears to be something to add on top of your regular system. It's really an analysis tool that sits on top of your transactional system. So, OK, eliminate all that pesky I/O, and I can see how you'd get huge speed increases for this sort of activity. Still, I wonder how horribly implemented their system was to begin with.

  •  You got to look out for the red flags:

    • It's not a technical article and I'm pretty sure the journalist that wrote this doesn't even know what an IDE is.
    • "The HANA database has booked sales of more than $200 million (165 million) in its first six months." Yeah, the people who bought it were qualified professionals that did so after careful research and empirical data study, not execs who just liked the sales pitch.
    • "Not one product made by SAP (not acquired) in the last 19 years has proven a success." But you managed to make an Oracle killer? yeah, I'm not dubious at all.
    • "HANA went from"idea to completion in about nine months" Oracle killer in 9 months when Oracle and other databases have been at it for years. Again not dubious.
    • "HANA runs 100,000-times faster than their previous database" This is where I stopped reading and started wondering whether the journalist got slipped a little something for the article as opposed to just being an ignorant muppet

But to be fair, neither does anybody working at Oracle or SAP.

For your information, Oracle produces NetBeans which is... um..

    Nevermind.

They had to raise their fees 10x to pay HANA's license, lost all their customers, so now the mailing only takes 3 seconds!

  • >> One large Japanese retailer used to need three days to process its customers rewards program. With HANA it now takes three seconds.

    3 days = 259,200 seconds.

    259,200 seconds / 3 seconds = 86,400 times as fast

While this may appear to be a simple mathematical error, keep in mind that according to the article, the people who buy this software are admitted into the "100,000K" club, or the 10 million club. Then you'll realize that the maths are not strong with these ones.

So your pedantic dickweedery relies on extrapolating exact values from a vague statement from an article this light on details?

Or: there are 86,400 seconds in a day. Ergo, it is 86,400 times as fast.

Yeah, they probably replaced some really stupid O(n^2) algorithms with better ones. Or, going by these insane numbers, probably just replaced their bogo-sort implementation with their library's built-in one (without even noticing that one is quicksort).

You're obviously new here, the morbs / dhromed / anyone else who randomly sets morbs off stuff is pretty much par for the course.  In fact i think the moderators would ban morbs if he didnt do this.  Also, I was under the impression (however misguided) that morbs is or was a mod.

And it doesn't mention just how many customers bought this. Although the income looks impressive, it could simply be 4 customers that have more money than sense and have signed up to a very expensive product.

Note how they don't mention that their previous database was Oracle. If they had, then I wouldn't read "we tried moving our customers off Oracle onto our previous database product and it was so shitslow that this new one is over 100K times faster in comparison."

"The son of the owner of company runs the IT department. He was so psyched he called me,"... asking "what the hell is this new 'Desktop Search' you've installed?"
