Conversation to end the week

  • Some time ago we were bought out by a large conglomerate which is in the process of imposing order and procedure on our chaos.

Don't get me wrong, this WTF-factory could use some order and procedures, but sometimes the bean counters demanding changes don't know when to stop.

Today we had a meeting between the folks demanding db-lockdown in production, and the folks who need to do production support:

Nobody is allowed to access production databases, not even in read-only mode, unless they get 3 levels of approval to receive a special login that will be auto-disabled after 2 hours

But sometimes there are emergencies with our real time system, and no customer is going to tolerate a significant delay like that. We understand write-access restrictions, but we absolutely need read-access to do our (support) jobs.

You should be using a staging copy of the db, not production!

We agree, and we've been begging for that for two years, but until they buy it and build it, we need RO access!

NO! We will recommend that they buy and build the staging environment so you can muck around with prod data without being in production.

40 minutes of pointless back and forth later...

Ok, so we are resolved that anyone without permanent support production authorization who accesses production in any way will be terminated!

    Wait, nobody agreed to that!

... at which point I got up and walked out because it's Friday and it was a pointless discussion. I told my boss to just wait until the next thing blows up and then document how long it takes to solve it without proper access. Then when the brass gripe, we can let THEM get it dialed back.

  • It's so nice to have "This Week in Snoofle's Workplace" to fall back on when the article is null.

    +1

  • I posit that snoofle is the elaborate public persona for a group of artist doing performance WTF art, presenting WTFs coming from all over the world. This is the only way I can self-rationalize away the possibility that there exists in the Universe a single place from which so much WTF can possibly come out. I wouldn't be able to sleep at night otherwise.

I've said if before, and I will say it again: Snoofle posts should have their own frontpage category.

I find it entirely plausible that so much WTF can come out of a single place. What boggles the mind is that they have remained in business more than 24 hours without catching in fire.

What industry is this software company in? I mean... FFS, Intuit is still in business and they're quite possibly the worst software company currently on the face of the earth.

One that requires them to regularly catch on fire?
