Just a little bitching

  • So our tech stack is basically Solaris, and all of our applications (Oracle, Informatica, COGNOS, a custom Java webapp), run on that somehow.  Unfortunately, for this latest project, we have a component that can only run in Windows.  So we put in a request for a Windows server.  Takes a few months to get it.  Another month to get access to it.  It's in a locked down portion of the network so we can't just put files on it, so we have a NAS set up.  That took another two months.  Anyone counting?

Now we can put files on the NAS from our laptops and pull them off on the server.  Yay.  I copied my jars over and tried to test but then, no Java installed on the server.

Thanks to the aforementioned lockdown and the draconian rules surrounding doing our jobs in this place, I now have to wait for support to install Java on the machine.  Since the server can't access the internet, it means some asshole has to go download it to their machine and copy it over somehow.  I have a way to copy files onto the machine.  I hope that asshole does too.

    Someone just shoot me now.

  • As long as you're getting paid, who cares? When the project inevitably blows past it's deadline and your manager comes to chew you out, show the documentation on the ridiculous security theatre playing out, and ask him point blank, how can I be expected to deliver this project on time with these kinds of problems? In my workplace, I do 110% of my own work, always delivery every ounce I can, and I never, ever for even a second entertain any manager by taking responsibilities for duties that are not mine. If something I'm assigned isn't getting done I have documented proof of why, how, and who is responsible, and pass it along to them.

  • Yeah.... Startups and small businesses have problems, but this ain't one of 'em.

Wow. I thought I had the last production Slowaris boxen in the world!

.... Then again, many of those machines aren't even Solaris. They're fucking SunOS.

  • This is our BI production box:

    bi@afgbiprdap2:~$ uname -a

    SunOS afgbiprdap2 5.10 Generic_142909-17 sun4v sparc SUNW,Sun-Fire-T200

Everything you say is true, but it's still frustrating right now.

So, nobody going to shoot me?

I guess some of them might be SunOS.  We just moved to the locked down network area and I bet they're the newer one.  But it just a name change right?  No real hardcore differences?

*Some* of our shit is moving to Linux.  Not enough though.

I can't. That puppy face is just too cute.

And don't be frustrated. It isn't your problem, it isn't your fault, there isn't a damn thing you can do but sit and watch whoever is responsible spin their wheels until someone higher up gets tired of it and cans them.

  • When I'm faced with situations like that, I read BOfH. It helps.

    BANG! BANG! BANG!

    POW! POW!

    RATATAT TAT TAT!

    BOOM!     BOOM!

    Hope you feel better.

P.S. Our development network is called purgatory for a reason. We've been working on getting it in for more than a year and a half.
