It's just you.  I once interviewed for a "programming" job where I was told that my duties would from time to time include cleaning and calibrating the magnetic tape drives.

And if you think the occasional faxing and distributing mail is beneath you, you're probably not a good fit.

I've been that one man, and I have no problem with something like passing out the mail in a small business - I've worked in a few places where that was done by whoever happened to pick it up off the mat after the postman had been.

I posted the ad because the impression I got was that they're looking for rather more than that, from someone pretty highly-skilled and presumably well-paid - it seemed to me that someone had heard that the company was looking for a systems-administrator, and someone heard the word 'administrator' added some secretary-administrator stuff to the job spec out of stupidity.

You mean the one-person-with-two-managers IT dept?

I'm trying to imagine how clueless those two managers can be.  Is one the owners son who coded a game in high school? Is one a Cobol dinosaur who insists on doing everything worlds-best-practice 1973 style?

No kidding.  And not only are they clueless, they're going to make you set up their home networks (because they can't):

And then call you at 3am to come fix it when their DSL goes down:

This whole ad just screams "Come be my poorly-treated data slave."

  •  Ah, I see they've changed "fast-paced environment" to "high-paced environment" to get around the people that filter out those types of job ads.

This roughly translates to, "We don't use QA; we deploy directly to production.  If it breaks, it is your fault and you have to stay on a 20+ person conference bridge where half of the people are pissed off customers while you are fixing the problem."

I just saw this one.  Did it say what it paid?  I'm betting it was about $40-$50k.  Where was it posted, Craigslist?  It is probably one of those ads where, "Hey, Ritwik needs an H1B so we have to advertise his job somewhere first so we can say we couldn't find any suitable citizen candidates."  Then they stack the description with his very specific skills, throw in the lowball amount they are paying him, and add that overtime thing so no one in their right mind applies.

  • Discourse touched me in a no-no place

    Nope. (archive if it disappears.)

I don't think well-paid is a safe presumption. Based on the description, I'd be very surprised if they offer more than an administrative assistant's salary.

Very true - these ads requesting the moon on a stick for peanuts are not uncommon. Even by those standards, though, this one was a bit odd.

    • Checking and distributing emails to the project managers

I've noticed people talking about how the application wants the applicant to act as the mail room, but it's different thanks to that e-. They want the applicant to read and then manually route all emails to their recipients, according to the quoted line!

  • Considered Harmful

The person directing mail can be in a position of power.

The U.S.O. troupes were sent by General P. P. Peckem, who had moved his headquarters up to Rome and had nothing better to do while he schemed against General Dreedle. General Peckem was a general with whom neatness definitely counted. He was a spry, suave and very precise general who knew the circumference of the equator and always wrote “enhanced” when he meant “increased.” He was a prick, and no one knew this better than General Dreedle, who was incensed by General Peckem’s recent directive requiring all tents in the Mediterranean theater of operations to be pitched along parallel lines with entrances facing back proudly toward the Washington Monument. To General Dreedle, who ran a fighting outfit, it seemed a lot of crap. Furthermore, it was none of General Peckem’s goddam business how the tents in General Dreedle’s wing were pitched. There then followed a hectic jurisdictional dispute between these overlords that was decided in General Dreedle’s favor by ex-P.F.C. Wintergreen, mail clerk at Twenty-seventh Air Force Headquarters. Wintergreen determined the outcome by throwing all communications from General Peckem into the wastebasket. He found them too prolix. General Dreedle’s views, expressed in less pretentious literary style, pleased ex-P.F.C. Wintergreen and were sped along by him in zealous observance of regulations. General Dreedle was victorious by default.

A one-man IT department that apparently needs two IT MANAGERS.

  • What a bunch of whiners. I've been asked to literally TAKE OUT THE TRASH before. Yes, my job included surprise janitorial duties.

Is that code for firing inept co-worker?

I think it's code for giving them two in the hat.
