Solitaire

  • I've got a copy of Windows 7 running in a virtual machine. I recently launched Solitaire, and got the following message:

Hardware acceleration is either disabled or not supported by your video card driver, which could slow game performance. Make sure you have the latest video card driver installed and that hardware acceleration is turned on.

Sure enough, the game that ran just fine on a 25MHz 80386 is almost unplayably sluggish on a 2800Mhz dual-core Athlon II X2. Isn't progress wonderful?

  • Because obviously it's the exact same binary as on your 386.

  • Stop the presses! Modern operating system stops using GDI+ to render in-game graphics. Just because it's a simple game doesn't mean it can't benefit from hardware acceleration or using modern libraries like DirectX.

I'm sorry, which of those two technologies is newer?

It does not mean that it can't benefit, but it does mean it shouldn't need them.

It's not the same game. It was completely rewritten for Windows Vista by a third party developer IIRC.

So now every pixel inside the game window is a completely self-contained 3D object for ease of development.

and now they wonder why its slow without hardware acceleration.

  • Isn't that what a pixel shader is?

  • The real WTF is playing Solitaire on your PC. Aren't there enough sites online which offer you a better solitaire experience? I should know, my wife plays Solitaire all the time ...

Are you saying I need an always-on Internet connection to play the single-player version of a game?  Why? So I can be an infoslave to THE MAN?

A lesser luddite than me, I don't even have an internet connection.

No, I just mail my postings and the dude at fedex types them in.

There is no fedex here, and the mail service is really unrealiable, I prefer smoke signals.

But seriously I just post from work, not from home, too busy there to need internet so I cancelled my subscription as I considered it a waste of money

Nah, a real WTF would have been if he'd been trying to run KPatience (KDE's clone of Solitair & Co.) on his Windows inside the VM.

No, the real WTF would be if he ran Linux on a virtual machine on his Windows machine, and used Linux's text-based webbrowser Lynx to access an online Solitaire site.

  • Just keep a deck of cards on your desk. Problem solved!

I actually saw this at a doctor's once: they had a Linux with KDE running in a virtual machine (host system: Windows), seemingly only to run their *nix only doctor's office management program in a maximized Konsole. Obviously the expert doctor's son that installed it had never heard of cygwin, which could have run it perfectly well in a native windows command prompt. (They appeared to have all other software in windows, like Office, Outlook etc.)

And you know this for sure because...?

Wonder how it would work in the Android Emulator that comes in the Android SDK configured for the PhoneGap plugin for Eclipse? That would wow 'em ...

You asked, "hey does this application actually require a full Linux OS install to run, or will it run correctly with only a basic POSIX environment?"

    You liar.
