Super Mario Maker WTFs (kinda? sorta?)

  • If you haven't heard of Super Mario Maker, it's Nintendo's latest "game" that lets you create and share levels for Mario games.

    I got it just recently.

There are a lot of new things that it can do that you can't do in a real Mario game, but there are also a bunch of things you can do in the original Mario games that you can't do in this one.

I was going to list them all here, but it turns out the Mario Wiki already has a list of all the differences ... and it's a long list.

  • The list basically reads as "they implemented the ability to do more things". Please explain the "WTF".

  • There are a lot of things that are... inconsistent with the original games.

For example, SMB went from 16 tiles across to 24. Since SMB loads enemies that are a few tiles off-screen, if you stop to grab the 1-up in 1-1 before going over the pit, the first enemy will have already walked off its ledge to the bottom.

There's also an issue in Mario Maker where a block will always contain a level 2 powerup (such as a Fire Flower) if you place it there, but in all of the original games, it will be replaced by a mushroom.

For that matter, getting hit when you have a level 2 powerup, you change back to your Super form instead of your mini form.

These are just two I noticed when remaking SMB 1-1, there are tons more.changes that are inconsistent with the original game... and ignoring the fact that special stage types such as Airships, Castles, and Ghost Houses are missing their normal entrances. It doesn't really matter for the latter two, but Airships are auto-scroll stages...

  • Oh dear, they actually make changes in new versions of games? That's terrible!

    Why?

Also, why the fuck do you own a Wii-U?

A game whose sole purpose is to make new levels for old games.

  • Banned

All these changes matter only if you're doing speedrun and memorized the route by heart (to the point you can play with eyes closed). They don't matter to normal people.

  • Discourse touched me in a no-no place

Which doesn't matter as this is a game where you build the levels.

They're just making things a bit more consistent across the different versions of map maker. Which is fine. I love old Mario games but it'd fuck me right off if every time I changed which version of the map I was building, about 40583 things changed.

You're building "old" Mario game levels - but it's still a new Mario game.

I own one because it has Wii Fit U. Not actually for any other reason.

  • Xbox Fitness is better.

Friends have been bugging me to get one for a while.

Even now, there are things that change between environments already:

    • SMB has different jump physics than the other games.
    • SMBU has walljump, which isn't present in other games.
    • The Raccoon tail, cape, and Propeller cap work differently even though they're the same powerup. Propeller cap doesn't require any run space. For that matter, classic SMB has the Mystery Mushroom instead which changes your look instead of granting flying.
    • Bowser's behavior is different between games.
      • In SMB, he jumps back and forth and fires fireballs. There's no way to make him throw Hammers (you can, however, make Bowser Jr. throw them by attaching wings to him).
      • In SMB3, he does the same as SMB but also does his stomp attack (which breaks any brick blocks he lands on).
      • In SMW, he does the same as SMB, but he also fires flames into the air that drop down like they do between Bowser rounds in SMW.
      • In SMBU, he does the same as SMB, but occasionally he will fire off volleys where he will fire a bunch of fireballs at 30 degree angles from each other.
      • Putting Bowser in a Koopa Clown Car makes him toss Bob-Ombs.

Those are just 4 things I can think of off the top of my head, I'm sure there are others.

Anyway, it's not just the things that are different between games that I have problems with.

For example, you can't actually force a player to fight a boss... well, you can, but you're extremely limited as to how to do it:

    • Make the boss Bowser and make the passage small enough so he can't move. Players can't pass through Bowser even with invincibility frames.
    • Put the boss in a Koopa Clown Car and make said Clown Car required to reach the boss room's exits. Be aware that you can't throw upwards in Super Mario Maker, which makes boss battles versus Clown Cars much more difficult than they were in the actual games. Plus, Bowser throws Bob-Ombs instead of Mecha-Koopas.

I'll be honest, the thing that bugged me the most after the boss thing was the way items in blocks don't regress... that is, if you're small Mario, blocks can contain Fire Flowers, whereas in the games (all 4) would have a mushroom. While there were exceptions to this, as far as I'm aware, it was the norm in all the games.

Actually, it makes me wonder what Nintendo will add as DLC since that's their current schtick. Probably additional bosses such as Boom-Boom and the Koopalings and maybe more environments such as the Desert and Snow tilesets. Heck, maybe they'll even add the Super-Mario All-Stars tilesets.

    Are you sure they're friends?

"Hey, buy this crappy dead-end console with a huge expensive but useless peripheral and made by the most customer-hostile company on Earth so you can play shitty games which only exist because the company's fan have more nostalgia than sense."

  • I will probably buy Splatoon some time soon.

Damn, now this is going to be filled with stupid fox memes.

It could be worse, they could have said:

"Hey, buy this crappy $399 PC-like console that's weaker than the PC you bought 5 years ago to play 1 or 2 exclusive games you might like and can't get on Steam!" And yes, I'm describing 2 different consoles with that statement.

Disclaimer: It might have been 6 years ago for said PC, I forget which year I bought it.

Same here. This is one of the games they wanted to play.

Mario Kart 8 was another. Here's hoping they fixed the "don't bother using carts because we made the motorcycles OP" problem that MKWii had.

Super Smash Bros was another, but I kinda got burned by the 3DS version and people I know barely mention either SSB version any more.

I'm also interested in some single player games, such as the next 3D Zelda title, which is due out sometime next year.

  • New Starfox

Basically the only reason I might ever own the Wii U

The weirdest part about that is that the 3DS version is quite different. I do incredibly well as Megaman on it, but not on Wii U.

Hyrule Warriors is more fun than dynasty warriors, because it has real bosses.

  • @Magus said:

Not the Zelda game I was talking about.

I never got into the Dynasty Warriors series. I'm aware of the series and how it plays because my brother was a huge fan of it. He probably still would be, but he died in 2009.

  • I don't mind the changes so much, but I'm disappointed with the overall lack of content and options. There's basically only one type of wall block in each theme and you can't even make connected pipes in the same area. Or water that doesn't fill the whole level. So many limitations.

It's still a lot of fun, though.

  • When I started making a list for the first post, I actually had an item for water in-level water (along with one for the Boss Bass enemy that requires in-level water).

The pipes thing annoyed me too. In fact, doors and pipes have opposite problems: Pipes only travel between main and substage, while doors only travel between parts of the same stage.

It actually makes the design of the SMB3 World 8 Fortress impossible as it uses doors to switch between the "front" and "back" sides of the Fortress.

There are some enemies that are... hidden for lack of a better term. For example, the Stretch enemy from Mario 3 can be created by making a (moving?) platform and dragging a Boo to it. I haven't tried about it as I didn't see something about it until I shut the console off last night.

Oh, and a tip for bosses. You can make the boss music play by dragging the Bowser-head sound icon to an enemy... it will play as long as they can see you (and aren't dead).

The bonus room music thing probably has to be in a bunch of places across a bonus room, though, as those two sounds normally stop if you get too far away from them.

  • @powerlord said:

Oh I figured, just felt like bringing it to attention, because it's rather fun, mostly in the ways it differs from dynasty warriors.

  • Hmm, I didn't know that about the platform + boo = stretch. I haven't seen any levels with that yet.

I really hope they add more stuff in DLC. As it is the whole thing seems to have less content than any one of the original games except for SMB1. And that's a shame.

Note: if they DLC in the penguin suit without slopes, or slopes without the penguin suit, I'm going to kill someone.

No, a game whose sole purpose is to make new levels for a new game, in the style of some old games. Each style is somewhat different, and they never claimed it to be the same. And some changes are good, and some changes are unfortunate.

Maybe, maybe not. WFU has the Fit Meter which allows it to gather logs of your activity, including altitude changes, during the day, and motivational stuff that uses that. And it's the natural successor of Wii Fit and Wii Fit Plus, which I've been using since 2009. Wii Fit Plus was the second game I bought on release day - the first being Civ III - but I wasn't lame enough to go to the shops in the morning to buy WFP. (Yes, when Civ III came out, I went to work that day via my usual video game shop so I could get my copy. I'm lame.)
