I Broke Google

  • Apparently searching the term "nincompoop" returns an error screen instead of search results.

  •  Works here.

  • pics or it didn't happen...

Weird.  It must be a problem with whatever server my query goes to, because it's still broken here.

  • I can't get to .com to test from here...  Funny though!

  •  What if you turn safe search off? Some may consider nincompoop offensive. Fourth result here:

    @google.com said:

    Welcome to Nincompoop
Nincompoop Inc offers Mulch, compost, blended earth and other sustainable earth products to Southern Ontario. 100% Eco friendly prodcuts for gardening, lawn ...
    www.nincompoop.info/

    which I find ... odd.

My 4th result is the Urban Dictionary entry. The "odd" thing is how Google made those two distinct determinations for us based on our personal browsing history... ;)

  •  No, I didn't mean that. I find the entry as such odd. Why would you be calling your business Nincompoop Inc. ?

The Real WTF is that people still assume search engines in general, and Google in particular, are still so primitive that you'll get the same results for a search string as your neighbor, or the guy 3 countries over.

No more than you assuming that I made that assumption. I just find it "odd" - note: interesting. Not in the sense of "zOMG, Google returned different results for the same search for two different people," but rather, "It's interesting how Google made the determination of which results to return based on two different people." In other words, I am fascinated by the signals that Google is able to collect, process, and understand in their complex algorithms. Man, for somebody who loves ripping everybody a new a-hole for not reading and not understanding what somebody posts, you sure don't like to practice what you preach.

  • @dohpaz42 said:

I wasn't referring to you specifically. Which is why I used the word "people" instead of "you". Unless you like being referred to as "people", in which case: "people need to learn how to fucking read".

I am people. But, that's neither there nor here. You directly quoted me, which was an inference that you were referring to me. Oh wait, were you talking to me this time?

Firstly, they're Canadians, eh? It's a "playful" name, as their page states:

Nincompoop, (noun)-Nitrogen, IN, COMposting, POOP (manure)

This reminds me...I was listening to one of the comedy stations on Pandora the other day, and heard a joke that went something like this:

I saw the most depressing business name the other day.
I was driving, and saw a truck with a sign that said, "Fiedler Roofing Co"
There was more...but that's really the meat of it....

I used the word "you", so yes I was referring to you. I know this is very, very difficult, but maybe you can try real hard next time, 'kay?

Let me ask a question: in another thread, TheCPUWizard quoted Yoda. Did you assume he was talking to Yoda?

Let me answer your question with another question: I quoted you in this thread, did you assume that I was talking to you?

I expect more from you, but instead you seem to be scraping the bottom of the proverbial barrel to stay in this argument. It's rather disappointing.

Hmmm, trying to get the tiny ball of rage on these forums more wound up?  What are you trying to accomplish here?

Perhaps this was supposed to be a "I am a people" so when blakeyrat murders the hell out of you your devious scheme will have caused him to commit genocide?

Just trolling the troll. It's a slow day for me, and I'm looking for some good quality blakey-trolling.

Nah, nothing that sinister or devious; I just wanted to make a Soylent Green reference.

  • @dohpaz42 said:

I'm disappointed, the least you could have done claim that's what you did so that we could move the argument in a more pedantic direction by arguing over supposed typos.

Eh, I don't take credit that isn't mine to take. But, to be pedantic, there is nothing stopping us from moving the argument in any which direction that we very much please to taking it.

  • @blakeyrat said:

    1) I mis-quoted Yoda.

    2) He is sitting right here next to me, and I am sure he was aware that I was not talking to him, regardless of any readers assumptions.

  • I bet more weight is assigned to your location than your search history, although I could be wrong. For example, googling myself in the state of Florida (well, like 5 places in FL) shows me as the #1 result, but in D.C. I'm quite far down on the 1st page.

Like much of my trolling, it was not intentional.  I had no problem getting results from home.  I'm not sure why that was happening from work.  We go through a central proxy, I wonder if something odd is going on there...
