Why are you asking me as a user which redistributables to install?!

  • Like I would know whether your application is written in VC 2005/2008 or both...

If your package needs both, then INSTALL BOTH! Don't ask me!

  • Also, why are these options on the "finished" page? They probably just didn't care too much.

Well if the actual game is any indication, you've hit the proverbial nail on the head.

    Yup.

I got it dirt cheap on Steam, and I can back-up that the last time anybody cared about this title, including the developers of it, was 2001.

  • ♿ (Parody)

Yeah, I hate that sort of thing. Either figure out that it's not installed, or just install it. I thought DirectX was all COM stuff, so that should be obvious whether it's installed or not. I have no idea about the AMD junk, but the MSVC redistributables are just dlls that they could just plop right in there next to the main executable and be done with it.

  • Garbage Person

Personally, I wish more installers would ask about redistribuables - I'm getting quite tired of everything on the planet "installing" MSVC '08 (actually, waiting for the redistributable to (sometimes) download, unpack and determine it should just exit).

I know it's terrible UI, but I feel like being a prick today.

  • 🚽 Regular

TRWTF is installing Duke Nukem Forever

Absolutely no need to ask the user - it is simple to detect if a particular version of the runtime is already installed.

I would probably fire someone if they did that and got it out to production. IMAGES OUT OF ASPECT RATIO ARE NOT ACCEPTABLE.

  • Why do they even bother asking at all : ref : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Side-by-side_assembly

Not sure if trolling or just missing the point entirely...

YEs, it is easy... Now it has checked an determined that it is not installed, there are two ways to proceed.

      1) Install it so that all future programs can use it
      2) Keep the DLL's local so only this application can use it.

There are tradeoffs, and neither is a 100% correct choice for all circumastances...So "Would you like to install....?"

[OK, for this program the scenario is not this nice, but the above DOES occur, so how do you (meaning all of the posters) thing the computer should guess ???

    Well...

If you install it for all programs, you can at least hope that future programs will take advantage of that.

If you install it only for your own program, well, they can't.

So obviously number one.  Except, of course, it won't work because Duke Nukem "The Day After Forever" will not detect it's installed and will waste your time with stupid questions or redundant downloads.

  • Dude, given you're dealing with Duke Nukem Forever, you're lucky you don't have to install Runtime stuff from 1998. Anyway, the real WTF is actually installing Duke.

  • I found out that if you don't tick the boxes the game just crashes. Actually, even if you do tick the boxes, the game still crashes on launch, as it also requires the service pack versions of those runtimes as well, and then it may still crash due to some weird conflict that nobody knows about.

Bottom line - I never got past the loading screen and now its uninstalled.

    If it helps:

    1) The Steam version works

    2) You're not missing anything

  • I have never been 100% sure of how EPOC dealt with this. When you install any application – which always use the native installer engine – every dependency is always bundled as a sub package, and during the installation you're prompted if you want to install each one, one by one. They all appear in the installed programs list, typically with OPX (binary OPL extension) in the name:

One would imagine that they would be uninstalled when the last program that needs them is uninstalled, but sadly, finding out anything about EPOC is very difficult, and I didn't uninstall enough to notice. Never had any dependency problems, but I also never saw two versions of the same OPX installed, so I don't know how this all worked out considering that they all went into the system directly (C:\System\opx).

If in doubt, blame the user:

Did I just slip into an alternate dimension? What does this half to do with Duke Nukem? Why does EPOC not exist, according to Google? My head hurts.

  • EPOC is now Symbian. It was a pre-emptive multitasking memory protected 32-bit embedded single-user microkernel operating system for ARM, and a rival for Palm OS and Windows CE (past tense because I don't know how much has changed since 1999 when the last version branded EPOC was released). EPOC only ever used EIKON as a GUI; Symbian vendors have devised several.

I think you and I both live in our own private dimensions …

How does your brain link that, which is I remind you so obscure that Google doesn't even know what it is, to this?

Even knowing what EPOC is doesn't help me follow your "logic" here.

  • Different takes on dependency management. And programs that, during installation, ask you whether you want to install random stuff that you don't even.

Google only cares about what's in fashion; if you qualify it with "psion epoc" or "symbian epoc" then you'll get more hits. It wasn't overly popular in the US though.

What makes you think anybody gives a shit what EPOC did in the same situation? I mean, you phrased your post like you were responding to someone's question, but nobody asked. I think you have the BRAIN WORMS.

  • You seriously want an answer to that question?

This is one of those times when it's best to nod, smile and not get offended over nothing …

I've already decided the answer is BRAIN WORMS.

  • Pray tell, good sir, what exactly is it that you want?
